I'm getting my name on a publication, but the paper is being written right now, and probably won't be ready to submit for another few weeks (July, maybe) and I'm planning to submit my AMCAS application before the end of June. Is it worth mentioning the publication even before submission? Or just wait to mention it when it's submitted/published in secondaries or update letters?

Thanks

If your name is getting put on this publication then I assume you already have an EC in your app about whatever research you participated in, right? At the end of this description just put something like "A manuscript based on this research is currently being prepared for submission" and then send schools an update letter when/if it gets accepted for publication. That's what I did for two of my ECs.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking of doing. I just wasn't sure if it was okay to mention it even before it was submitted. Thanks!

Just be aware, it may take a little while for the application to be proccessed.

Definitly mention the paper in preperation though.

Sorry to hijack, but I have a related question.

Are you listing the research and publication separately? Is this the best way to list these activities on the AMCAS?

In my case I have my name on a publication and am currently working on a second research paper (currently under preparation).

For activities should I list these activities as 2 or 3 slots:

1. The Publication for Research Project 1
2. Research Project 1 - Research Experience (what I did/my contributions)
3. Research Project 2 (what I did/my contributions + mention paper under prep)

Or Should I:

1. Research Project 1 + Publication for research Project 1 - all in one slot
2. Research Project 2 (Paper under prep)

Well I have an undergrad publication from one lab (Lab A), then I have a manuscript being prepared from the lab I work in now (Lab B). So I listed it like this:

1. Research experience from Lab A (what I did/my contributions)
2. Publication from Lab A (gave it its own slot, not to mention I couldn't even fit it in the original description).
3. Research experience from Lab B (what I do/my contributions... this is a completely different lab, different PI, different field of biology, etc) and mentioned the manuscript in progress.

When you say Research Projects 1 and 2, are these from the same lab? If so, then I would recommend combining your projects into one slot and mentioning the paper in prep. Then giving your publication it's own slot. Giving each project a separate slot seems like overkill (I've worked on a bunch of projects). But if these projects weren't in the same lab and completely different, then I would recommend the first way you listed (3 slots). Either way, I think it would be good to have the Publication (already published) put in it's own slot so it stands out. Just my opinion though.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your help!!!

Perhaps I shouldn't have used the term project. By project I mean the entire bulk of work that was done to take the research from methods development to data collection to publication. I am the first listed author for the publication that is done and for the one in prep.

Project 1 and Project 2 are in the same lab. however they are not related and will be published in completely different types of journals (the first was in an medical journal and the second likely in a microbiological etc..) Also I wasn't paid for "Project 1" but was given a stipend for my work on "project 2"

I think I'll list them separate as you suggested, even though they are in the same lab the aim of the data collected and work performed was dissimilar. Also, I just tried combining it and I think it's less confusing if I separate these experiences into individual slots.

Thanks again for your help. If the above plan doesn't appear sound please let me know.

Oh I see. Hmm.. well did you have different titles/positions on these 2 projects (since one of them you got a stipend... ie Fellowship, etc)? Since they sound so different, it seems like you're better off listing them as separate items. I just thought it would be weird if you had 2 entries like "Student Researcher at Lab X." Perhaps just be sure to give them different experience titles.

Good luck! 🙂
