Quick Question on "Academic" experiences

Hi All. I'm currently pre-writing secondaries, and for some of the "challenge and failure" type essays they specify non-academic experiences. For some of these essays, I talked about an experience during a research project I worked on. Would this be "academic" in nature? Or does academic mean solely class-based?
