do PDs usually only care about 1st author pubs? what if you were 2nd-5th author out of 10+ authors on bigger projects?

While first authored papers are clearly impressive, second or lower authorships can also help an application. Most applicants are not published, and publications in the field of ophthalmology or basic sciences can be impressive on an application.
