Hey I just wanted to see if conversations about race, treating minority populations, healthcare disparities in minority populations, etc are discussed at your medical schools? Whether this be in a formal lecture course, in small group learning, or any other avenues for having these discussions. I am looking for some ideas for my school because it appears as if we are lacking in this area. Thanks for the input!

We have had small group activities, and the topic is discussed in lecture when it's pertinent. If your school is in a city or town with a significant minority population and/or a steep socioeconomic curve, you could organize a day for students to visit community leaders in these areas, to understand what their health concerns are. It's amazing what we might take for granted- easy access to healthy food, transportation whenever we need it etc.

Occasionally, but I don't think it's important in pre-clinical medical education. It's kind of like spending 20 minutes learning how to take a BP. Yeah we should know about it, but there are nurses and medical assistants out there to do it for us.

Large scale improvement of healthcare disparities in minority populations is an issue for public health workers, not physicians. The same goes for treating minority populations. Do a dual MD/MPH if you want more discussion on those topics.

Yup, we've had discussions about that at my school. We're in an urban setting, so the underprivileged populations tends to make up the bulk of our patients.

There were a couple lectures about disparities in healthcare based primarily on race and SES, and there were student run groups for those who had more significant interest in the matter.
