Radiology 2012 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone receive interview invites of any sort yet? None of the rads applicants at my school have yet but a lot in other specialties are starting to see some in the last 24-48 hrs. Also, do you guys think it would be appropriate/safe to email ONE program director, who's program I'm doing an away rotation at next month, to let him know I'm coming and that it's my #1 choice this early? So that at least my app gets looked at before I get there? Or should I just not say anything right now.

Do you think we can just hand deliver our LOR from a letter writer to the school? Obviously in a sealed envelope... or is that considered not staying true to the "waived my rights to see the letter"? I just want to speed up the process, and not wait the extra 2-3 days it takes the postal service and the school mail sorting service to get things in.

Why can't they just use a fax machine?

My two that are in were faxed over. I think it would depend on how strict your school likes to adhere to rules I guess. I don't think it says anywhere else that you waived your right to see the letter other than the letter itself. I asked the person that uploads these if the cover letter is uploaded and she told me no. So really you could read it if the doc says it's fine even though he wrote that you waived. It seems kind of like an honor system to me.

I heard some of some of the texas programs and knoxviille, tn sent out a ton of interview invites today.

I haven't gotten any rads offers yet (didn't apply to UT-Houston or Knoxville). Got a TY earlier this week though. My app is complete with all rads programs - all letters, etc., med school transcript uploaded on Wednesday.

Stats: step 1 260, AOA, solid overall. Most of my rads programs have downloaded my complete application. Just thought that might calm a few people down, knowing that right now not much is going on even if your ducks are in a row.

so what was everyone's final app number?
and did anyone ever follow up on that step 2 thing on mgh website?

I applied to 75. My application is not very strong.. I'm just a likable person that will interview well, but I think getting interviews will be a problem. I am optimistic I'll get some and be able to impress at least one enough for them to take me. I figured the extra couple hundred bucks was a drop in the bucket compared to my future investment and my total debt anyway.

that's a ton. can't really blame anyone for being neurotic though, better to overshoot than under shoot.

42 for myself. i wanted to be extra safe, but beyond a point if you know you can get 15+ ivs with your app, all the extra ones pose the theoretical hassle of rescheduling, canceling, blah blah blah...it's not the extra couple hundred bucks, it's the pain in the ass of the constant email influx of rejections, interview scheduling, etc...

its hard for me to imagine why anyone would want or need to apply to more than 40-50 apps if grades and step are high

I settled on 45. If I wasn't applying to hyper competitive regions or if I was interested in just the south or midwest only I would definitely apply to less. I have no idea how the cali or nyc or chicago programs are going to treat me and that subset is over a third of my program list and doesn't include elite programs in less desirable areas. Had to play it safe and include a lot of mid tiers to balance out my list

I completely agree, if your grades and step are high.. but my grades are all pass across the board with high pass only in surgery and psych. And my step I is 10 points behind last years avg. My confidence that I did much better on Step 2 is low (although I don't know yet) and I just decided saving $300 bucks or whatever it was gonna be wasn't worth it, and applied broadly.

Sounds very reasonable. You have to look out for #1.

Based on the 2011 Charting Outcomes in the Match, if this year's match is even close to last year, you should have no trouble. (That is, as long as you're not applying to all the top programs/those in the most desirable locations.)

I settled on 52. Almost exclusively MW/Southern so I figure that should be enough for 15 IVs. We'll see though.

I did 47 at first but got paranoid since I applied to California programs as well as a lot of highly competitive programs, so bumped it up to 65. I think I probably overdid it but oh well. Good luck to everyone!

I cut 4-5 places at the last minute mainly just because they were really undesirable for reasons like very small (3 residents per year) or you had to travel significantly for your peds rotations. We'll see if that was a smart move.

I basically applied to the 3 east cost regions (frieda breakdown), which was 91 total programs. I cut out places that I knew I did not want to live and also cut out top 10 programs and was left with 74 (my actual # not 75). So that's pretty much what I did.

I went with 32 rads programs. I know I want to stay in the South/Midwest as well, but I applied to some top-tier places elsewhere. 250's, pretty much all honors, AOA.

I applied to 26 rads programs total. 258/279 an step 1 and 2, AOA. I'm applying to midwestern mainly and a lot aren't super competitive. No invites here either yet, and I applied to UT Houston.

is it true that many rads programs on the east coast don't give out interviews until the deans letter comes?? If that's the case (like someone told me today) I guess I'll be sitting tight until nov 1st.

Last year's dates from AM. While many don't come until after Nov 1st, a good number come before

No prob man. That list is going to keep me sane at least until mid November

Hopefully I'll start to be reviewed soon, my transcript only got uploaded at the end of Tuesday.

My stuff has been uploaded up there for awhile. I think I would take this a lot better if I had a few rads interviews under my belt, but I really don't know what I could've done differently if I don't get an IV. I've been killing myself since day one of medical school. Hopefully not to no avail. They have multiple waves of invites so who knows what the logic is. I guess this is where the randomness factor comes into play.

I wouldn't worry about it. Last year they didn't give out any until later, maybe the committee only reviewed a few people.

From AM previous threads, quick search, of notification dates:
2010-11: University of Michigan 9/23, 10/5
2009-10: University of Michigan: 9/3, 9/15, 9/29, 10/6, 11/4
2008-09: University of Michigan: 9/9, 9/11, 9/17, 10/3

So they've offered both before and after this date. And these are only the dates that were obtained via self-report in AM threads, so it's reasonable to assume there are additional notification dates scattered in that no AM poster ever listed. Alas, no reason why they would not have looked over my stuff yet. Can't dwell. I'm less concerned about this single data point but rather whether it bodes poorly for other desirable interviews due to some unforeseen red flag in my application which causes me to get denied all around. The thought of which disturbs me into a near-catatonic state.

The way this works at my institution (and likely at most, definitely at michigan, which published their criteria on their website) is that your application is assigned to a reader who has a given amount of time to review your app, then they score it and forward to the committee, which votes yes or no on interviews. There's simply too many apps at most programs for the committee at large to review all of them. So my guess is that process takes a variable amount of time. Besides, you seem to meet all of UMs criteria from what I can tell.

I'm right there with you man. I would feel a lot less nervous if I had one invite. Makes me wonder if there's some glaring hole in my app that I somehow missed

Ditto. Gotten some TY/PM nibbles though.

Not even that but none of the prelims/ty's I applied to have started offering IV's according to AM.

The only thing that is keeping me relatively sane is the fact my 3rd letter didn't get uploaded till this week and I know some programs won't even consider you for an IV until you have 3 letters in.

edit - Michigan requires at least two letters in and my 2nd one was downloaded by them until this past Monday. :xf:

Relax a lil guys, definitely chill about PM, anyone who is a legit candidate for rads will have no problem with PM/PS, TY is a lil harder. Only two programs I applied to (mayo/um) have even offered interviews so far in the last 3 yrs.

Yeah I'm trying my best. It is disheartening when you have friends that already have interviews as well as programs you applied to starting to give out offers. Just makes me more neurotic than I need to be at this point. Just 1 offer would take me down a few notches

I think I'm more upset at my school for not sending my stuff until AFTER UT-K gave out what seems to be their big bolus of IVs. I probably only got to the review pile yesterday.

Don't worry, your school isn't that bad.. My transcript isn't uploaded yet, and 2 of my letters that have been in the office since Monday are not uploaded to ERAS yet.

Any IMGs applying for rads? I see a couple on AM, but very few cop to it on here. As one myself, Its definitely a nerve wracking time, no matter how good we think our apps may look.
