Radiology application
I am in my 4th yr of (DO) med school, applying for Radiology and Interventional Radiology. I have received only 2 interview invites, how many did the others receive? TIA

I had a student with an excellent app, not Rads, that did not have a single interview until mid Dec. I called my former program and asked why they were not considered and they recieved an interview days later. He received others later that month they went on and matched a top program. Over the last 3 or 4 yrs i have seen DO applicants receiving interviews later in the cycle. I'm only guessing, but with the increased number of apps, it might be taking longer to get to the DO pile, or just no correlation at all. It could be all due to the increased number of apps programs now receive. I think it's too early to panic, it's only Oct. Good luck and best wishes.

The 2023 match for DR will edge closure to the GS 2022 match percentage and will be below 60% in the 2024 match if nothing changes in the way of increasing residency numbers.

EM imploded + DR job market recovery. Many of the people looking for a “lifestyle specialty” likely switched to rads.

Also there’s the issue of rapid school expansion.

Yeah right when I made that post I realized that DO school expansion was a problem. I looked at the chart and 5 DO new schools graduated their inaugaral classes in 2021 and 2022, which no doubt played a role in this. Not to mention that a total of approximately 140 DO students when into DR in both 2020 and 2022, so PD’s aren’t actively trying to lower DO students matching. But the number of IMGs going into DR decreased from 138 in 2020 to 78 in 2022.

Rads isn't necessarily considered a lifestyle specialty right now. It's all about throughput. Reading 150 cases a day, eating lunch at your desk, nights, weekends, night hawks can't recruit to cover your nights, its a mess right now. I think FM and Psych offer better lifestyle.

But you can do work remotely and don’t have to put up with difficult patients (just difficult doctors). You’re also the first people I’ve see to ever say that FM is lifestyle….

I guess that’s true but you will almost never make 500k+ as a psychiatrist if FM dod

I’ll just say the sheer number of apps has been insane. My program received over 1,200 and they’re really trying to review every app fully. Only one wave of invites has been sent to my knowledge.

Keep in mind that as a DO, you’re almost always the second string in invites unless you rotated there.

I'm sure there are regional differences. In our area, nighthawks couldn't cover evenings or nights, requiring night shifts and decreased staffing the next day due to post call. Staffing shortages requiring additional shifts on sat and sun. Working nights and every weekend gets old after awhile, even with increased compensation.

There is some useage.They use off shore to cover nights typically. It's hard to sue someone who is not in country, so 24/7 doesn't catch on. Secondly, clinicians like to have someone they can talk to right away. Typically offshore docs are on daylight duty while we are on nights and vice versa.

I don't know how big of a role social media played, but rads has also been hyped up to the max on reddit and other forums, where it was often praised as some oasis paradise in medicine with an amazing lifestyle (which could be true to an extent, I have no idea about the day-to-day of a radiologist).

How late is that second string of invites for us DOs usually? I have a couple of interviews already for my specialty of choice but not at a specific program.. is it still too early to send LOI's?

It’s program dependent. Just send the LOIs if you want. Everyone says something different about this, but imo if a program gets mad that you expressed interest, that’s not a good program.
