There was a grad student union at my school, too. I didn't join though.

We were all in it by default. You could get out of it somehow, but I didn't bother. When I was at McGill the grad students would go on strike all the time.

We had to pay to join ours. I was like, "hmm, you guys are going to negotiate for me, try to increase my wages and benefits, etc. regardless of whether I pay to join???" No brainteaser there. :meanie:

Heh. I had a new audience of MCAT students tonight. It's always interesting to teach a class for the first time. They each have their own personalities, just like individual people do. This class was small and all full of girls.

do you tell them your mcat score when you introduce yourself? if you do their jaws must all drop at the same time.

A-man, is it just me, or is there a ton of spam in the MCAT forum today?
i saw, i hate seeing all the moved threads. i'll remove all the redirects tomorrow night to clean up the forum. next to banning and post holding, being able to do stuff in any sdn forum is my fav smod perk.

That's been done before. 😴 Really, I'm pretty much avoiding pre-allo nowadays.

I'll tell you one thing that astounds me though: since I've become a full mod, I've been getting a TON of PMs from people asking for my advice. It's like I'm some kind of SDN Dear Abby or something. 😛 I mean, they don't just ask me for help with studying for the MCAT or to read their PS (although I get plenty of those). They're more philosophical questions that I can't possibly hope to answer, like which school I think they should attend or whether I think they should even go to med school at all. I have to say that I feel a little scared when I get PMs like that. The thought has occurred to me on more than one occasion that these people might actually take my advice. :meanie:

Evo, if you're reading this, you should join our journal club. Pretty please!!!
Sounds interesting. What's it about?

And I hear you about the stupid PMs.......sheesh.

Only if they ask. Girls usually don't ask. It's almost always some smart-a** punk boy that asks. :meanie: They do tend to ask me where I'm going to go though. I don't know why, but people are very interested in knowing about that, even here on SDN.

It's hard to say whether it would impress them if I told them my score; it might just make me come across as being arrogant and/or intimidate them. Since I want to seem approachable, that is the main reason that I don't volunteer the info....I do tell them that I have my PhD in chemistry, and that I started teaching for Kaplan 10 years ago. Considering that several of my co-instructors are college seniors or just graduated college, that already kind of makes me stand out. 😛

They'll be gone by then. The forum has been unusually busy lately.

Go down to the Biomedical Sciences subforum in the Physician Scientist forum, and I posted the thread there. We're basically going to have an SDN journal club. You can pick any article you want when it's your turn to lead, though it would be nice if it's not too technical, since some of the members, including yours truly, are still pre-meds. :meanie:

dude, i did good on an official half length step 1 today. 😀 👍

PROGRESS. its so nice to know that if i was to take this beast tomorrow I'd pass with points to spare. now i have about 3 weeks left to try to boost it to something competitive.

as for the PMs, dude i get them all the time too. the ones that are a book long and tell me their life stories freak me out.

i'm here......crying into my ben & jerry's. get to start studying for the mcat again tomorrow. maybe i'll get into med school before I'm 80 years old but i seriously doubt it.

on a less depressing note: CONGRATS A--u are totally gonna rock step 1 :luck:

Heh. Okay. I'll have to try and not geek out for this one.

BTW, I finally buckled down to try and finish the paper based on my research. I'd been feeling burned out from grad school and so hadn't touched the stuff in a while. However, when I started downloading more current papers to read, I felt the old "research rush." 😳

A-man, tell me, do you think that *I* should go to medical school? Considering that I'm not into blood and guts, I hate seeing people suffer (especially kids), and I'm wont to puke and pass out, this may be a tough four years. Maybe I should apply for a full-time job in the academic dept. at Kaplan. They didn't wind up picking me as teacher of the year for the nation, incidentally. I don't remember if I told you that. But I ended up getting $250 for winning at the regional level. 😎

Awww, I'm sure you'll do great Nikki! The studying sucks but it'll be over before you know it.

Sweet! Glad that you're seeing improvement. If you go to this thread at the orthogate forums, you'll see where folks went up a whole heck of a lot over that period. :luck:

Only a year left until it's my turn. :scared:

Yep, you're going to do awesome A-man. I was bored last night so I found some sample step 1 questions. OMG, how much you have to know is pretty incredible. I just hope I'll be able to handle it.

thanks for the link evo 👍

you will not believe how fast that year passes. i said the exact same thing to my cousin last year when she was an MS2 and now here i am. 😱

its totally doable. the trick is to think "why, why, why" as you're studying. for example, the boards will give you a case where a female patient comes in with a butterfly rash, is positive for antibodies to double stranded DNA and complains of joint pain. you'll read that and think, "yes, i know this... lupus, she has lupus!" they dont care about that though, what they want to know is what type of hypersensitivity reaction would be evident if a biopsy was taken of the butterfly rash? 😱

took me a while to get use to that, it forces you to think about this stuff differently.

thanks nik.

look, in the long run it doesnt matter if getting to med school took you a little longer than planned. remember, this is something you will be doing for the rest of your life so an extra year or whatever isnt really as huge in the long run as it is in the moment. 🙂

we'll be study partners for the next month! the whole thing about us being in different states and studying for different exams, no biggie. 😉

:luck: :luck: :luck: 😍 😍 😍

Q, I posted for you.
I added you to the master schedule. Can't you edit my posts yourself as an smod? 😕

Nikki, you're going to be fine, hon. Just make yourself a schedule, study a little bit every day, and take multiple practice tests under timed conditions. It will also raise your score several points if you send that Ben & Jerry's my way. 😀

yeah, I don't want to spoil it for A, but I really thought that after the 2nd season everything seemed "rushed" because they had to keep active viewing audience and people found it "too hard to follow". I mean seriously. I didn't think it was too bad of an ending. I figured that most of what happened would. Especially the part about sloan. And I knew that the closing would be on a beach as a given. Although maybe little isabella will get her own series soon 😉

does that mean that sydney dies?

close! its type 3, complement is the culprit. thats only in types 2 and 3 so you almost had it. 👍

i'm telling you, you will knock this test out next year with your mad marine med student skillz evo - no worries. 🙂

Heh. I'm past the point of being offended by you. 😉 You have my permission to help me keep that list updated. In fact, I'd appreciate it if you would.

A-man's delight sounds like Turkish delight. A definite no-go. 👎

I highly recommend against it. We have a Turkish post doc in my lab, and she brought us some. You have to understand that I absolutely love all sweets. It's amazing that I don't weigh 5000 pounds and that I haven't had every single tooth fall out of my head. But in this case, I could not spit this stuff out fast enough.

There was a grad student here who hung himself in the stairwell in my building. (He wasn't in my lab). It creeped me out every time I went in there. And about 10 years ago there was an infamous massacre in the physics department where a grad student shot a whole bunch of professors on his committee and then killed himself. That was the impetus for a whole bunch of changes in how grad students are treated at Iowa - we are unionized, for instance.

WHOA!

Q, you know I am interested, I just want to see how everyone else does it first....and get this move out of the way!
