that reminds me of the army commercial where the guy comes home to talk to his friends about what he's doing in the army. they say, "so what are you doing there, flying out of planes and stuff? laugh laugh" and he says (with a dead serious face), "nope, i'm working with 'puters."

Last night I had the most vivid dream that somebody on my committee was trying to take away my Ph.D. because I didn't know enough about HPV. 😱 (My research had absolutely nothing to do with HPV, btw).

When will the school dreams stop??!!

I am reading "First Cut" right now. Just started. Kind of educational and easy reading at the same time.

I loved that book! But I skipped the parts where the writer did his thing. Too boring for me

I'm not sure how much they cost here in the states. I'm guessing it's around 100.

OMG, just save yourself the hassle and get the omnibus edition that has all of the books in it right away, because you are going to love them.

I think everybody pukes or passes out at some point in third year. It's ok. 😉 Just sit down for a bit, get something to eat and drink, and you will feel all better. I have both passed out AND puked. 😳
Heh. There's a good reason I guess why some of us plan to spend our lives in a lab. 😛

Happy b-day, Mush. 😀

Haha, that's the truth. Bone marrow biopsies are my killer. I passed out once watching an epidural even though it wasn't grossing me out or anything. There you folks know all my deep dark secrets. 😳

I don't like the parts where he writes about the book and stuff....every freakin' chapter!

I am terrified of passing out. Seriously, it ALWAYS has been my biggest fear. Stupid, I know.

I just ate a whole box of Hot Tamales (ok, there are 5 left)...why? why? 😛 But, get this, I went to return by Rx sunglasses because I hated them and found out that they put the wrong script in the left eye. No wonder it made me dizzy. Anyway, I chose some other ones and they should be waiting for me right now.

Interesting. Here's hoping it never happens to you! 🙂

(I didn't mean to be nosy, I just think that phobias and irrational fears are really fascinating. I have a few myself.)

It is definitely stupid and irrational. It is the root of ALL of my other fears. SERIOUSLY. I think the only way I will get over it is to just drop one of these days.

My dad alwasy says that people either faint or they puke. I puke. I don't mind that. I have read about how people hate vomit. I have no problem with it. Mine or anyone elses. It sounds funny, but I am the one that you want with you if you have to puke.

Have you ever fainted?

My weird makes me want to pass out thing is suturing. I can watch a whole bloody c-section and be totally fine but if I'm not in the right mindset, as soon as the doc starts sewing her back up, I have to sit down. The same thing happens for reparing episiotomies or tearing. Odd, huh?

Fortunately, I've passed out enough in non-gross medical situations that I know when it's going to happen. I had to sit down twice in the OR when I started feeling very warm. I haven't actually passed out in those situations yet. 😉

I did pass out in a shopping mall 4 days before Christmas - when I came to there were so many people around me and some guy had my head between his legs (turns out he was a physician and immobilizing my head since I went from standing to the concrete), but that was a seriously disturbing view when I came to!

I'm a fainter, not a puker. 😳

Oh, and puke doesn't bother me at all anymore. I had doing it, but watching other people puke doesn't phase me. I've seen my kids do it enough and have had them do it on me enough that I'm used to it.

What a wonderful thing to get used to huh?

Ok, so feed my anxiety... what it is like? I hear it's just like falling asleep. Are you woozy when you wake up? Is it scary?

Before I faint, I get very warm, feel tingly and light-headed, and a little sick to my stomach (but I don't puke). I have about ten second from the warm feeling until passing out. Then I don't remember what happens. It definitely different than feeling like falling asleep for me.

Have you ever been under anesthesia? When I come to, I feel the way I do coming out of anesthesia (I don't puke with that either - I'm not a big puker I guess). It feels like no time has passed and I'm pretty disoriented.

It's not a huge deal for me. I haven't passed out since I've learned to recognize the signs better. If I can sit down with my head between my legs or lay on the floor, it won't happen. The worst part is usually the headache afterwards if I do pass out because it means I didn't get to the floor in time and fell pretty far. 😉

I have been under anesthesia a couple of times.

I have had ot sit down or lie down on many occasions to prevent myself from fainting (or what I think will be fainting). I guess if I just keep doing that, I will be cool. Of course, that is so embarrassing!

the only time i've ever passed out is once when i donated blood as a senior in highschool. i didnt pass out from the sight of the needle or anything (they dont scare me) but after about a minute or two of donating i felt really light headed and it felt like everything slowed down all at once, i could even hear my heart thumping. when i regained consciousness the nurse was standing right over me and said, "Welcome back! How did you like disneyland?!?!" I SWEAR TO GOD, the first thing that went through my head was "What?!? I'm at disneyland... how am i at disneyland...."

then i remembered but i swear for about 10 seconds there when i came back i was sooooooooo out of it, i actually didnt remember that i was giving blood right when i woke up. its funny, all my friends said i was out for about half a minute and the red cross people dropped the head of the bed to get blood to my brain but that before i came back i just had this pale bluish look on my face. crazy.

That's funny.

I swear, things would be so much easier if I weren't so controlling. That's what this is all about...a stupid loss of control. Ridiculous.

I've only passed out once and I had the foresight to do it in the waiting room of my doctor's office, which I think showed excellent judgement on my part. It was rather like falling asleep, I must say. The disconcerting thing about it was the loss of time/orientation... it was just like removing a bunch of frames from a movie. One second I was walking into the room, the next I was on the floor with about 15 people's heads over me.

I also managed not to hit my head on anything as I fell. I think I'm just naturally skilled at this fainting business.

ooh i've thrown up SOOO many times but never passed out. at least not that i know of. as i wrote in the blood aversion thread, i used to get carsick just about every time i got in the car until i was 12 years old. my poor parents...all i had to say was "mommy, i tick, i tick," and she would pull that car over right away. then it stopped for a while...and it comes back every now and then, especially on long crowded subway or bus rides. but interestingly enough, i never get airsick or boat-sick. maybe they're not related. i carry my seaband wristbands just in case i do feel it coming on, and they usually help. dramamine is also a life-saver, but only if you take it early enough.

It's more embarrassing to actually pass out - trust me!

I've fainted more times than I can count. Mostly because I had congenital heart disease that I didn't find out about until I was in college. Once I got a pacemaker it has been much less but I can still go down pretty easily. Sometimes I pass out with no provocation or warning (rarely, thank goodness) but usually like someone else said I get real hot, lightheaded, things sound funny, etc. - enough warning to at least sit down.

Tricks - even if you are stuck standing in the OR or something, you can still clench your leg muscles or even lift them up like you're walking in place. That helps me a lot. But if you feel like you're going to pass out - just step away and sit down.

Several years ago I was shadowing an orthopedic surgeon and another girl was with me. Anyhow the pt was getting staples removed from their lower leg and was in such pain because they didn't give her any sort of anesthesia or pain medication. The girl who was with me passed out from it and started getting all dizzy. i've never felt like that, but I haven't viewed surgery yet. I think that if it happened to me, it wouldn't be from seeing it but from wearing the face mask and other stuff too tightly and that getting to me. Or if there is some sort of stench that would probably get to me. I get choky when it smells too bad and start coughing. That happened in anatomy lab this semester.

Never been to disneyland, but Disneyworld in Orlando is soooooo overrated too. I was never too fascinated with it. I didn't even like Universal Studios Orlando either. Never been to the one in California. I only like Busch Gardens. Other then that, the others are boring.
