Random non-MCAT and only peripherally related to the MCAT thread - Part 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had plant warts frozen off by a derm when I was younger. And one freckle that I didn't like (scared it would go cancerous on me) last year. I should probably go every year, I need the microdermabrasion for my face.

Thanks, megboo. I may wind up just getting a futon now like I had originally planned. Sigh. It's hard to coordinate everything from out of town....

mush, I think oxeye needs to be punished for baiting the mods. What do you think??? :meanie:

Noooo!!!!!!!!

I had to post these since we have so many mods in this thread. 😉

Q, sorry the bed won't fit! ikea has nice futons too. i got mine there...it works very well as a sofa (not like those ones where the mattress gets all lumpy and falls down) and opens out to a full-sized bed. i'll see if i can find it and send you the link.

P.S. oxeye, please, don't bring the kids on your interviews. 😱

Ack, well what am I going to do with them then??

Does this mean they can't go to med school classes with me either?? I figured anatomy lab would be great fun for them. :meanie:

Thanks, I'd appreciate that. And ok, I'll give you your points back plus a bonus point or two if you find me a good bed that fits. 😀

hahaa, ok...working on it as we type!

I can't wait to go shopping at IKEA. And this is despite the fact that everything my sister's ever purchased there has fallen apart. It's just so cheap! And I can buy lingonberry jam, too!

I really like IKEA - I can't wait til I have my own apt to furnish!!

What if you were born with freckles (like me)? Are you just born damaged? :meanie:
I have moles/birthmarks all over my body. Apparently that doubles my chances of skin cancer. I wonder if it just doubles my chances of detecting it late or actually doubles my chances.

Right. There were two of them, one saying not to feed the mods, and one saying to beware of the mods. If I'm going to be a bad gal, at least let me have the chance to torture someone or something!!!

oxeye, I was told it was about 10 x 10, which is not very big.

scent, thanks for the link. It is a nice bed, but it still doesn't solve my space problem though. What do you girls think of this one? It only has one bed, but it's great for saving space: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.htm...2?_encoding=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000BOPQ40

I'll get an air mattress for guests. Thoughts?

Edit: my favorite thing about this loft bed is that it's intended for teenage boys who are half my age. I bet my classmates will all be totally jealous. :horns:

I bought the Leksvik bookcase, tv stand (now functioning as a printer stand), coffee table, end tables and a free-standing kitchen cabinet base to function as a kitchen island - no complaints so far.

There are certain things to buy and certain things to avoid - the best way to figure it out is to visit the showroom at each store. Beware, you might want to leave your wallet at home the first time. You'll want to buy everything and the stores are HUGE.

MM - There's an IKEA in Schaumberg and Bolingbrook - I think Schaumberg is much better.

screw it Q--just get a california king 😀 No--I think a bed like that is a great idea--it really would save a ton of room to have the desk under the bed. You don't want a futon? hey what school did you decide on?

Youre room is 10x10 😱 I like it and the air mattress for guests but will they have ROOM 😱

Although I like the cali king idea. Just study at the library 😛

Guju - yeah, I did end up just buying another house. I was really upset about the whole thing for a while but it really worked out great - seriously my house is much better than either the first one that the guy backed out, or my back up offer which sold in the interim. And it was $15k cheaper. 😀

I am fortunate to have a guest room with a twin bed, so if any of you come interview at U Mich you can stay with me! 👍 (Meanwhile, I'll be in my room with my new queen, hahaha 😛 )

Question to all Randomites:

Was your ugrad research medically related? I feel a bit awkward talking about my research and wanting to go to med school since my research has pretty much zero relevance to medicine.

I wouldn't feel awkward talking about it at all. You could stretch and say that my research was medically related (I studied retinal development in zebrafish during undergrad), but that's a major stretch. I think a lot of people in the medical realm have respect for the research process itself.

I love air mattresses! I lived on one my senior year. Even better is an air mattress on top of a futon mattress... but be wary if you roll around at night. quite a shock to hit a cold wood floor

Funny you should say that you did retinal development on zebrafish. We had our summer research program project presentations and someone was doing just that.

I'm talking basic science physics research. Can't really be applied to medicine at all.

The only times I did research was to write papers for class... and that's not the research you're talking about 😳 . Along the same lines, publications... how much importance is it? I did one for an internship, but it was more on a public policy stand point, not sciencey

hey brett--I think they will appreciate your research experience. I think it makes you kind of unique--I personally don't know any premeds who did physics research. I actually did research in the psychology department on cardiovascular psychophysiology.

Meh...I guess seeing all of the typical pre-med projects caused the self doubt.

What is your physics research on?

I was an RA for Dr. Chris Watts (http://www.csd.jmu.edu/people/watts.html) when he was at South Alabama and subsequently have low-tier authorship for a couple papers and presentations. I ran the subjects and analyzed the data (I'm still a little peeved that I wasn't higher up on the authorship chain, but everyone else was a professor and me a lowly Ph.D. student).

Anyway, our research was with pitch perception and voice. Kinda interesting and really the only thing related to medicine was how well people control their vocal apparatus during singing to be considered "talented". Still, though, it was really a good experience to get my hands dirty in the data, so to speak and really understand all about ANOVAs, MANOVAS, ANCOVAs, and t-tests.

Edit: This was not my major professor for MY area of interest, but I was "assigned" to him for my stipend. He's a cool guy, though.

It's definitely scientific - could you relate it to nuclear medicine?

BTW - particle accelerators are freaking cool. I've seen FermiLab and Argonne Nat'l Labs (My uncle works at Argonne and my ex-boss's husband at Fermi).

Really blows your mind!

Our Society of Physics students hosted a big meeting and the keynote speaker was the former director of Fermi Lab: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_M._Lederman

I've been toying with MD/PhD in Med. Physics, PhD in Med. Physics, MD only, MD/MS in Med Physics for a while now. I really like it, am drawn towards Rads and Rad Onc but I don't know if I can justify the extra years.

If I remember correctly, you are one of the young'uns so the extra years may not hurt so bad 😉.

If you are really interested, you should apply - the worst they can say is NO and the worst that can happen is you "only" get your MD. I guess it really depends on how interested in research vs. clinical medicine you are.

I'd admit you to any MD/PhD program, that's for sure!

The main thing that sucks is there isn't a program in my home city. 🙁

And I'm pretty interested in doing MD/MBA as well. So confused 😕
