Where is everyone? I have to leave in a few minutes to go to a homeowners' association meeting. It oughta be good...some guy wrote an article for the newsletter that many viewed as racist and the neighborhood newsgroup has been on fire about it. I am sure it will get heated....I can hardly wait. :meanie:

I will return this evening though and I hope I will encounter many of you lovely randomites...I miss you all. 😍 Hey, where's Q? I haven't seen her around today. Meg, your rundown was really interesting!

Talk to y'all later!

Q is probably exhausted from giving a free med school interview lesson on sdn today

phew! secondaries may not be as bad as I thought......I got GW's and it only has two small "essays," if you even want to call them that

though i'm sure not all of them are this easy...

We don't have corn around here (cornfields I mean). I miss it. It is great to have fresh sweet corn so early in the season though!
ooh, i love corn.

i bet you would know all about corn what with being in iowa for so long in school, beary! 🙂

Yes, I wonder if she's going to just start talking one day and I'll miss the days when she was so sweet, quiet, and never talked back!
 that's what happened with my best friend growing up...I didn't know her back then, of course, but her mom always talked about how she was sooooo quiet for so long (almost until she was 2), and then all of a sudden she started talking all the time.

i'm sure things are fine with your girl. 😍

Thank you so much for your response Meg. You are awesome! I'm going to print out that post to remind me to try all those things with her. I'll ask about getting her hearing checked at her 12 month ped visit (early August is when I think it is scheduled). She looks when I call her name, so I know she's not completely deaf at least. 😉

I think the questionaire is called Ages and Stages - is it ASQ? We've gotten one at 4, 6, 8, and 10 months (all adjusted ages).

It is interesting - when I try to get her to repeat me by babbling bababababa or mamamama she just looked at me a smiles. Sometimes she'll coo and laugh. She thinks it's funny but doesn't seem interested in trying to repeat me at all.

Yeah, that's the ASQ. No offense to the service coordinators, but the ASQ is strictly a screening tool, and just because you answer "no" to those questions doesn't guarantee there is a problem!

Oh, maybe I miscommunicated. They aren't saying that she definitely has a problem - but that she needs to come in to be evaluated. I've been thinking for about 3 months though that she is definitely behind other babies her age with speech.

I'm hoping it all turns out to be nothing. 😀 I think she's perfect the way she is. Seriously - babies don't come any sweeter than her.

Heh, I love to talk. That's why teaching is such a great job for me. One of the kids who works up at the front desk at Kaplan asked me once if I was nervous about being in front of a class. I said, "Nervous? No way. It's a total rush for me every time I think that all of these people are coming here to listen to me talk for three straight hours, and I'm freaking getting paid for it!!!" :meanie:

so i take it you have thought about teaching medicine at some point?

also, whats the difference between a "mod" and a "super-mod" on SDN?

There were 3 providers at the clinic tonight: Peds, Women's Health and a Urologist. I got to triage all their patients tonight because I was the only "allied health" there. I am so friggin tired.

On top of that, the Urologist accused me of doing the UA wrong because everyone kept coming out with UTIs. Well DUH. Do you think we're going to bring you healthy people at a free clinic? These are people we've already established have UTIs. Idiot.

Not to mention, paps late in the day, not the most pleasant experience.

Sorry, ranting over. 😀

2600 characters into my first draft of the PS. I have ideas for the remainder but I just can't force myself to write them down 😳 twisting it for MD/PhD is tough :scared:

YES this is so true. 😱

I think it actually helped me to write my MD/PhD essay and signifiant research essays first. I'm still working on the PS, but I already know what I included elsewhere, so it's helping me to avoid repeating myself too much.

When will we be able to access the MD/PhD and research essay boxes? It won't let me touch it without doing the PS first.

Oh man .....

My husband's dad just called and left a cryptic message on the answering machine "You need to call me." That was it. I was sitting at the computer feeding the baby and couldn't answer.

So hubby just tried to call back and it's busy. He just left and won't be back for an hour or so.

So now I'm going to sit here wondering for an hour if something bad happened. 🙁 My in-laws can drive me insane sometimes, but I don't want anything to happen to any of them, ya know?

geeez! i hope everything is ok

that is one of my biggest peeves in the world! my younger brother, who has a bad habit of getting into trouble, always leaves me messages just telling me I need to call him.....then I worry all day as I try to get a hold of him!

I typed one letter in the PS box and it let me go to the next one.

Hi all. Oxeye, have you heard from hubby yet? I hate when guys do that kinda stuff. I have told mine...let me know upfront that nothing is wrong...*****! We go through all of this and I worry for nothing...which I am sure is happening here. But still...why can't men learn?

T, BB...care to answer for your sex? Wait...is T a guy? Sorry Teerawit!

Okay - just talked to my sister-in-law. Apparently my mother-in-law is in the hospital. She's been having chest pain and just not feeling right. She went to the ER, didn't have a heart attack, but there was something funny on the EKG so they're keeping her for a day to watch her.

I have no idea what it could be, but my sister-in-law said that her dad didn't sound too worried and the doctors expect her to be fine.

Yay, now I get to be the one to tell my husband when he gets home and keep him from freaking out. I'll have to start it with "Your mom is going to be fine, but ..."

if you choose md/phd for the amcas there are specific research boxes?
It actually shows up on everyone's application I think...after you fill in your PS, the next box is the MD/PhD essay, but it says optional on there. I could be wrong though.

Anyone ever heard of a FURminator? I bought one earlier hoping that it would cool the dogs off and help the shedding problem. Damn! That thing was expensive! Someone please tell me that it actually works.

Glad it wasn't an MI, but that's not good that there is still something going on. Keep us up to date. Tell him quickly...don't drag it out...that's the worst.

Just told him over the phone - he called me on the cell (forgot he had it) to see if I wanted him to buy a cooler. I made it quick and painless so I don't think he got worried or anything about what I was going to say. He worries about anything medically-related more than he needs to.

Are doctors just generally cautious about heart issues in a 55-56 year old smoker? Or is it probably worse than my sister-in-law seems to think it is if they are admitting her? 🙁

My GUESS (total speculation) is that they see something that they can't identify on the EKG, see her history and think "if something big going to happen, it will happen soon." Unless she took a strip into them, they have no way of knowing what her normal rhythm looks like.

That makes sense. I doubt she has ever even had an EKG before.

I have a feeling she's fine. Hopefully I can keep my hubby from getting too worked up.

Yeah, my dad had a MI a few years ago. His nurses from the OR called me at work (since my mom was on the helicopter with him), and the first things they said were, "Now don't freak out, but your dad had a heart attack earlier..." Yeah, I made it from Mattoon to Missouri Baptist in STL in about 90 minutes.

After the worry died down my mom said they heliported him from So ILL to STL, and while they were preparing the helicopter, several of the OR girls were fussing over him, and 3 happened to have been pregnant at the time. The funny this was that at separate times, they came up to dad crying, saying "Our baby's going to be just fine - you just get better!". The helicopter pilot gave my dad some really funny looks, my mom said.

I think it is pretty standard to admit someone with risk factors (50s, smoking) overnight for observation if they have unexplained chest pain - the "rule-out MI". I admitted billions of these folks. Usually everything is fine and they go home the next day - it's really just to be sure.

Yeah, I was flying about 120 on I-70.

I'm one to talk.... the day my dad got his transplant, I made it from 270/Olive to my apartment in South STL to pick up my suitcase and then drove 375 miles home to Cinti in about 5 hrs 15 min TOTAL...... I still don't remember that drive or how I did it.

There is a really interesting piece on Anderson Cooper 360 re: families in the ER right now. Really good stuff. Too bad I missed the beginning.
