i'm not sure molly but i dont think babies can take hemodialysis, the pressures involved are just too high for a newborn. i'm pretty sure thats why the babies are on peritoneal. great question though, i wish i would have thought of it this afternoon! 🙂
in general though, when choosing between peritoneal vs hemodialysis in adults it all depends on the patient. if the patient lives in a rural area far away from a dialysis center, peritoneal is a great option. its also great for patients who just dont want to take out all the time to go through the hemodialysis sessions every week, peritoneal can be done at night while you sleep and then again during your lunch hour for example. thats what i remember from the lecture a year ago. some patients just cant handle that much self care though, i'm sure you know what i'm talking about since you have healthcare experience so for those hemodialysis is a given.
