3rd time is a charm! 🙂 Welcome to the best thread on SDN: The Random Non-MCAT thread--PART 3!

This is a place to chill and talk about anything besides the MCAT. 😎

dude, that sucks. 🙁 I wish pre-med advisors were more helpful. My "mentor" I guess you could call her is an assistant prof at the med school I want to go to and i'm doing research for her now. She may not have all the answers but she points me into the right direction on who to talk to. I've come to terms that I will have to apply to med school with a undergrad gpa of about a 3.0 and have to do something else to stand out. But it can be done (and I will do it) but at least give relevant advice. She was even giving out "faulty" advice which was confirmed by the med school to be false. I haven't spoken with her since and nor will I ever again. Except to maybe send a copy of my acceptance letter 😛

well at one of the hospitals, I just got assigned to the adolescent medicine service, which is rather small- only 3 docs, I think? so I'm basically going to be the social work slave of the Chair of the Division of Adol Medicine for a local med school, and if you think I'm not going to milk THAT resource, bitch, please- you be crazy! my friend who left the position had told her about my school plans, so she's been asking me questions about where I am in the process, and as she teaches the med students/residents, she's including me on the medical stuff.. she ROCKS. (She introduced me to the new interns by calling them "little bitty baby interns!" since last week was July 1. :meanie:  )

From the supplemental app:
What college-level calculus courses that included integral and differential equations will you complete prior to starting Medical School? AP credits are accepted if listed on your Transcript.

Required course work includes a minimum of one year in biological science, general or inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and calculus through integral and differential equations. However, statistics can be substituted for one semester of calculus. A course in biochemistry, though not required, is encouraged.

I've taken Calc 1-3 but not Diffeq 🙁 and none of them covered that info.

From the WUSTL website:

However, statistics can be substituted for one semester of calculus. A course in biochemistry, though not required, is encouraged. Although many applicants will have majored in one of the natural sciences, applications from those who have majored in the humanities or social sciences are equally welcome.

I think that differential eq. thing is misleading. I think they meant derivatives and differentiation, but I would call them to ask. It seems intriguing that they would allow statistics to substitute for differential equations (especially if you could substitute an introductory-level stat class for a higher-level math course). But have you taken stat?

Guys - UTMB interviews went out for Aug 4th and I didn't get one. Why am I suddenly terrified? That's the Texas school I really wanted before MCAT scores came out and if I don't get into Baylor that's where I really want to go. 🙁

How do you know that interviews came out? Maybe they didn't send them all out. Or only folks that applied really early (I don't know if you did or not).

Don't sweat it yet. It is still EXTREMELY early.

I think you're right. Don't let this diff eq thing keep you from applying.

Love, Random's Little Bitty Baby Intern

😎 I thought you'd get a kick out of that.

she's also the one who said "Calculus? When the hell would I use CALCULUS???", then asked the other 3 attendings in the room when THEY use calc  when I told her about Wash U's calc requirements.

(btw, by unanimous vote- adol med, peds, gi, and nephro- none use calc)

I applied pretty early. I think I was verified through TMDSAS on the 21st of June. 🙁 I hope more invites come out. I can tell you my confidence just took a big hit.

I took the AP exam so they gave me credit for stat - wonder if that counts.

Rad oncs MAY use calculus. They would be the only ones ever. Even then I bet it is the med physicists in rad onc who would actually do the calc.

Any time you have to do any remotely complicated math you just call pharmacy. Like if your patient's vanc dose it too high? What do you drop it to? Who knows. Call pharmacy.

You rock and you are going to have a great application season. Chin up!

Apparently I hit the reply button, but I have no idea what I was going to say.

Ah, well, one more post for me.

Though I think it's likely a lost cause at this point, I shall never surrender!

I wonder why people even refer to doctors as people in white coats?

Everyone in a hospital wears a white coat. I have seen RN's, Speech-Path, Radiology techs, and tons of other positions wearing white coats.....it's impossible to tell who is actually a doctor unless you have been there for a while or you can read name-tags (which are always flipped over anyway) from long distance. It freaks me out!

It's expensive. Mine are still sitting in a box.

It's like 60 bucks x2 = more money than I have right now. 🙁
i had a really nice frame done for mine but i haven't hung it up yet. waiting for a better apartment to go with it 🙂

I don't have an interview suit yet.

What does yours look like VD? 🙂
i have one suit right now but i'm planning on buying another one. my current suit is black and the collar is taupe. it came with a skirt but i also have pants that match perfectly. i want to get a new one for interviewing though. i'm thinking dark gray or black pinstripe.

Agreed.

good news though randomites, i just found out how to access the hospital computer system from home. i can check up on my patients from here so that i know how many labs and whatever will be ready for the morning when i get there. ie....... whether i can get a little extra sleep. 😍

plus since i'll be able to see all the results for everything we've ordered i wont have to take so many notes home when researching my patients. 😀

hello molly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i just popped in so i havent read anything yet, did you have a ppd? did you start med school today?!?!?!

Heya A-man!!!

I don't start for another two months, but I had to have a PPD, titers drawn for measles, mumps, rubella, hep B, and varicella, and a TDAP, with results mailed to my school by August 1st.

sorry about the pain in your arm molly. thats very similar to what my med school required when we enrolled the only difference being that we just needed to hand in the papers at orientation in august, we didnt have to mail them in. we didnt have to get a Tdap though, I havent had one in forever so I'm due.
