Welcome to Part 6! Everyone did a bang up job by hitting 10k in less than 12 days--11 days 19 hours and 18 minutes to be exact. A new record! 😀

For those not familiar with what we do here, Molly has been kind enough to put together a nice description.

Not sure what the Random thread is all about? Well, here's the answer to all your questions.

It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

Thanks Nikki. The guy ob/gyn I shadowed didn't seem to think it was all that bad in terms of time with family, but guys really have a different perspective on the whole family thing. It sucks hearing from a woman that she doesn't think she got to see her kids enough.

Who knows - maybe I'll get into medical school and decide I'm really into skin and go into derm. It's just hard because right now I have a hard time seeing myself doing anything other than ob/gyn.

Ugh ..... I have way too many stressful things going on right now!!!!!!

And I saw my OB/Gyn today and started talking to her about her experience in Ob/Gyn (prompted by the fact that she is dropping OB and just doing gyn starting in a few months) and she urged me NOT to go into OB/Gyn if I want to spend any time with my kids.

This sucks. 🙁

That sucks...just keep an open mind about it. It could be just her experience. You might love it in rotations. You might love something else during rotations. Don't let others feelings make a career change for YOU. You decide what to do with YOUR life. 🙂

If you want to spend a lot of time with your kids, what about radiology? My friend is a radiologist and has a 7 month old kid. He works 9 hours a day, 8am - 5pm and 1 weekend a month. He likes his job, but he always tells me "I wish I could win the lottery"

He was a non-trad btw. Was an engineer before.

Awww. I'm sorry to hear that. You were sooo enthusiastic going into it. Gyn seems to be where a bunch of physicians do to maintain that work-life balance. I have a classmate that was in Gyn and managed to find enough time to do her master's degree (part time of course) while working. Mind you, she has dogs, not kids, but she seems to be involved in a lot of other stuff outside her normal job duties (i.e. she's into big time volunteer work/advocacy work). Talk to more OB/Gyns though before you cross it off your list.

Hey people!!!

What did I miss about the whole checking with the restaurant manager about the oil used in the food? 'Cause that was/is my life with my boyfriend. Just curious if someone else out there is allergic to cottonseed oil. 🙂

My mom keeps telling me to go into rads, derm, psych, EM, and not surgery or primary care specialties if I want time for my family and self.

Whatever.

Medicine is not that insane of a field. The training seems to be the hardest part, and the rest is what you make of it.

Ok, so we went to see Jackass 2 at the 4:40pm show here in town, and in front of us were 2 junior-high-aged kids buying tickets for Jackass. Since it's rated R, and knowing what to expect from the first one, my husband and I immediately spoke up and asked the cashier if she checked their IDs since they didn't look 17 (per the rated R movie).

She looked at us and said, "it's ok, they're buying an adult ticket."

We said, "Um, rated R movies require the presence of an adult or the moviegoer to be over 17. This movie is WAY inappropriate for a 12-year-old!"

The assistant manager came out and basically told us that the ratings guide is just an "industry standard" and that they don't require movie patrons to actually be 17 to buy or see a rated-R movie. She also said some parents have been mad about having to come in with their kids and buying the tickets and having to chaperone them.

WTF??????????????????????????????????????????????????

I'm seriously thinking of writing a letter to the editor in our town paper and sending a copy to the theater manager. How bogus!!!! Why even have ratings, then????????

Yeah, that's a good point about medicine being what you make of it.

My doctor said the issue with her and a lot of OBs in this state is the malpractice insurance. She said she would love to deliver a limited number of babies and have manageable hours, but you need the malpractice coverage and then to make enough money to pay for the insurance you need to deliver a ton of babies, which leads to the long hours.

I'm just glad I'm done having babies. I really like my ob/gyn - I'd be upset if I needed to switch to someone else for the baby stuff!

Well, I'm off to play hockey. Good night all!!

(Don't worry, I'm not hockey obsessed...I play soccer too 😉)

You can do whatever you want as a doctor really. If you want to be a surgeon, you don't have to work crazy hours a week. That's if you work for a hospital. You could always get a job with a private practice and become a partner eventually. You coudl start your own practice after a few years of the hospital getting referrals. Maybe you could work for the hospital at reduced pay and reduced hours? I don't know if that last part is possible. The first two definitely are.

um no--i think it's a law that you have to be at least 18 to buy the tickets. not unless it varies from state to state??

Yeah, the malpractice thing is out of control. My mom quit doing OB because she was paying thousands more in malpractice premiums than she was bringing in by deliveries. She also lives in IL, one of the worst malpractice states.

R is for 17. Not sure what 18 is. Is that the nude rating whatevr that even is?

You're right, though. It is the law and does not vary from state to state.

Believe it or not, it's a voluntary ratings system. No law in effect, although I wish!!!!!

If their parents were with them, I wouldn't have been bothered so much. It just shows me that this theater is more interested in making money any way they can than showing discretion where discretion is due.

wow--sorry to hear that. when i have children I want to have great care. It sucks to think that all of these wonderful doctors are being driven away from OB.

ok--well when i worked at target you had to show your ID in order to buy music with the parental advisory label. Does anyone know if that is an actual law or also voluntary? If it is a law I'm just wondering why they enforce it for music but not for movies?

Yes, this is a law. I think it should hold for movie theaters as well!

i live in one of the most hostile states in the country to OBs, megboo. i asked some of our residents on ob what their plans were post residency and they all said they were going bear in terms of the insurance. no joke, there is just about no one in this county in a surgical subspecialty that pays insurance. thank god florida lets docs go without the malpractice insurance, here if they put up $500,000 in a fund or something that cant be touched then they are allowed to practice without it.

so sorry to hear your mom had to give it up

Malpratice sucks in FL! So what's that $500k about? If someone sues, they have to take out of that amount?

dude, its one of the worst states. right - that fund, something like 250,000 or 500,000, is frozen and can only be tapped if you have a judgement made agaisnt you or if you get the malpractice insurance.

I had to edit out that first question mark. I know it's pretty bad, lol. So what if the case rules at like $1mm? You're screwed out the $500k and possibly more?

not sure but its nice that florida is a homestead state, no matter what we cant lose our house.

plus there are lots of buffers like setting up a limited liability corporation etc....

That's what I was wondering. How does the physician protect their personal assests if there is a huge settlement?

I live in one of the really bad malpractice states. I keep hearing about OBs around here going to gyn only but hardly any new docs are coming to town to practice OB. It's getting hard for pregnant women to find doctors!

I don't think my state has the option to go without malpractice insurance - at least I haven't heard of any doctors doing so.

I'm baacccckkkkkk!!! Watching Ugly Betty.....it's actually pretty good!

Wesley Snipes had his house repo'd here in Orlando. He paid $1,050,000 in 1990. It's probably now around $4mm+. Next door to Tiger Woods, literally. Lake front in the most expensive neighborhood in Orlando (Shaq lives in it). That **** sold for $740k, I **** you not. I'm ****ing pissed it wasn't advertised well enough for me to know. 😡

😍 Trader Joe's 😍

Gotta love that 2 buck chuck wine...actually it's $2.99 here.

Ugh ..... I have way too many stressful things going on right now!!!!!!

Ob/gyn is rough...I remember an Ob/gyn doc at a hospital I used to work at stopped doing Ob due to high malpractice....what a shame.

A LLC or incorporated private practice will not allow them to take your personal assets. A sole proprietor and partnerships don't have these protections. LLC is they way to go. 😎

(Limited Liablitiy Corp btw...)

florida is also a homestead state, no matter what judgement comes down they CANNOT take our home. lots of docs put $$$ into their homes here because of that.

for sure, no one really practices under arsenic, MD for example. its all under arsenic LOC.

Donald Royal, ex-Magic player, had his house repo'd, too, a few years back. I knew the kid in high school whose parents bought it. Donald apparently went insane when he found out and destroyed all the drywall and wiring. They paid a lot to get it fixed, but still came out ahead.

I think the law might've changed because my dad's friend was pissed about it and told me now they can take your house.

um i don't understand. what do you take out a loan or something to put that 500 K up? and then what if you have a huge ruling against you?

then the LOC goes bankrupt i guess. personal assets are procted but just in case you keep your house in this state no matter what.

Seriously, the only benefit I see is if you get lucky and never have a case for years where you would've lost money by throwing into insurance. Can't it hurt you if you get sued a lot?

last i heard, 2 months ago, it was still in place. its just that it only applies to your primary home. if someone owns property in orlando, tampa, st. pete for example you can only keep the one you live in the majority of the time - the rest are gone.

hmmmm very interesting. i hope your test went well!

yeah, i think it did. thanks nik. i have a presentation tomorrow i'm gonna slap the finishing touches on now.

remember the patient i mentioned yesterday? after the 2nd surgery in as many days he crashed. went into respiratory failure and sepsis. he was in the CCU this morning. hopefully he'll pull out of it but it just floored me this morning.

I just had Black Chocolate Stout beer (Brooklyn Brewery) with brownies.....pretty good....not good by itself though
