Welcome to Part 6! Everyone did a bang up job by hitting 10k in less than 12 days--11 days 19 hours and 18 minutes to be exact. A new record! 😀

For those not familiar with what we do here, Molly has been kind enough to put together a nice description.

Not sure what the Random thread is all about? Well, here's the answer to all your questions.

It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

Sup everyone.

Dudren, congratulations on the verification. :hardy: Did you get a lot of e-mail secondary invites yet? When do you plan to send in LOR to be complete?

Long time no see. I went to class at 10 and came back to a verified email at noon. Emory sent me the link later in the afternoon and I had already pre-emptively done their mini-essays. I just now fired off an email to our premed office to get my letters uploaded.

So are you decided that you will apply to 8 total? I'm still having a hard time bringing it up to 8! 😀

I'm debating one or two more, but yeah, likely just the eight.

Nice - who is done?

Emory and of course, WashU for jlw.

Nice Durden! 👍

Ana, may I ask why people mention Baylor a lot? I know GujuDoc asked me, too. Are they more friendly towards OOS compared to other TX schools? Do you think they're a good med school (research or primary..)?

Unfortunately nothing in Texas. 🙁

I have an mdapps, I just don't link it here. You randomites have enough dirt on me to track it down though. 😉

I acutally have it bookmarked. 🙂 I lol'd at "trying to get psyched about our pitiful SEC teams"

No UChicago I see. I know we talked about their secondary before. It's too damn difficult.

I heard U Penn doesn't have a secondary. I mean NO secondary at all. Is that right? Not even a few basic forms to fill out? Is there even a secondary fee or is it just Primary -> Interview Invite?

hee - I was NOT a Baylor fan until Q really talked to me about it. It's a great school and they take around 30% OOS which is a good chunk. The TMC is amazing clinical experience and Houston is a pretty cool town.

I'm not sure which thread I read this in, but I heard if an OOS gets a $1k or more scholarship to a TX med school, the state has to treat the student to in-state tuition amounts. Is this true? It looks very tempting if that's the case.

btw, I talked to my friend who lived in Austin when he worked for Dell. He told me he hated TX weather, but then I mentioned that pic you posted of Hill Country. He immediated interrupted me before I finished and said that was the one place in TX he thought was incredible. 😀

Ha, I'm honored by the bookmark. And yes, Chicago's secondary looks awful.

Penn's secondary is apparently just give us money and one incredibly long form asking if any relatives ever taught, worked, or graduated from there. I think my alma mater will be the last one I get since they screen, which is a good thing because I don't have the patience right now for a 2k word autobiography.

If someone pisses you off, do you send the angry email or are you the bigger person and resist?

😡 Sorry I just had a crappy weekend.
I'm sorry Ana. Do you want me to send you some of the yummy pineapple pudding cake I made this afternoon to make you feel better?

🙁

 the hill country is beautiful 😍 best part of Texas!!

I heard that rumor about public schools. I'm not sure if it is true for Baylor or not... I never really paid attention to the OOS stuff

i wouldnt even think twice about it VD, at 99% of schools student tour guides are NOT playing a role in your selection.

I can't remember if I told you guys this story, so apologies if I did. I was pretty involved with MSTP admissions and gave a lot of the tours. Usually 2 of us did it since there were 3 interview weekends with 15-20 applicants each weekend.

So we were touring the hospital, one of the applicants drops and has a grand mal seizure. All these doctors, etc. came running and he woke up. Said it was his first seizure. Anyway, the guy I was doing the tour with stayed with him while he got medical treatment, etc. and I took the rest of the applicants on the rest of the tour. Turns out they all thought the whole thing was staged so we could see how they would react.

Sucks to hear about the 2k autobio man. Unfortunately, I have yet to start any essays, but I'm still 5 weeks away from my MCAT score. I hope to have them all done by then.

I just dont' want to write an essay for say Johns Hopkins or HMS when I have no idea what my MCAT score would be...

Add to my last post: I have to write one for HMS because I've already graduated. Even though it was 4 months ago and all I've done was study for the MCAT! 😡

HMS is just a brief description of what you did in your time since graduation (besides postwhore 😉 ). Nothing to be scared of unless you're going the masochist HST route. :scared:

I stumbled across some old article about a guy in Sarasota, FL who bought some Russian machines that make real diamonds under high pressure and temps with only carbon and a small diamond. Apparently his orders are all sold out and his prices are over $3k a carat! The buyers know they're man-made, but they are real diamonds (exactly the same physically and chemically as natural ones).

*&^% I have to start prepping for my interview now. I think I'm good for most stuff but I need to read about some ethical stuff, problems in healthcare. UGH.

I feel you, I hate preparing for interviews. I know I have to, but why can't I just be in already!!

Another company in Boston also makes diamonds, but under a different process. They use those for semi-conductors and very rarely for jewelry like the Sarasota place does. The Boston guys can make black diamonds. Red, blue, white, etc. There are only 20 red diamonds that were found to be made naturally.
