Welcome to Part 6! Everyone did a bang up job by hitting 10k in less than 12 days--11 days 19 hours and 18 minutes to be exact. A new record! 😀

For those not familiar with what we do here, Molly has been kind enough to put together a nice description.

Not sure what the Random thread is all about? Well, here's the answer to all your questions.

It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

I'm so scared to get asked questions about health care. I don't know what stand to take, liberal or conservative. Do I need to sniff out the interviewer's ideals? Or should I just go with my own opinions.

I'm terrified of offending them

So how do you prep for interviews everyone? I was just going to read the interview feedback for the school and review the questions people post there and make sure I had good answers for "tell me about yourself" and "why do you want to be a doctor". The interviews are closed-file so they won't have read my awesome PS.

Another company in Boston also makes diamonds, but under a different process. They use those for semi-conductors and very rarely for jewelry like the Sarasota place does. The Boston guys can make black diamonds. Red, blue, white, etc. There are only 20 red diamonds that were found to be made naturally.

Red diamonds?! 😕 I thought the rarest were blue, but my only source is the movie Titanic.

I've been reading the feedback and reading the school website to remember why I liked the school.

Hey - I even got free books today because I asked about a program that was so obscure no one knew what I was talking about

I'm going to go with my own ideals - though I tend to be pretty middle of the road anyway so it's pretty safe.

I wouldn't try to debate anything with your interviewer - especially if it's a topic you don't know a ton about. But offer your opinion - if the interviewer challenges you, don't take it personally. Stand your ground about your beliefs but acknowledge that the interviewer has a good point (even if you think it is stupid). That's what I'm planning to do anyway.

I plan to be myself. Even if I know before the interview the school is very conservative, I won't even wear the stereotypical white shirt and red tie.

AMCAS Verified 11:26 AM!!!!

:hardy: :hardy: :hardy:

WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMCAS love! 😍

that's great!

Yay!! My interview should be scheduled by tomorrow!!! It'll either be next Thursday or Friday.

And that Friday is my birthday - not exactly a fun stress-free way to spend a birthday but I'll take it if that's the day they pick.

congratulations!!!!! *crosses fingers for good luck*

and i thank it all to my undiagnosed ADHD

hee hee hee- I've got the exact same problem.......

jlw and beary can verify that resembles me!

nice hair, dudette! of course, Megboo got to see my HS senior pic last weekend as well. jlw with hair all one length, down past her shoulders, and CURLED 😱 (a rare and elusive photograph) Oh. and several pounds lighter 😳

I actually went to an interview prep session with Vandy's admission dean tonight. His #1 piece of advice was reading over your AMCAS and being able to talk about enthusiastically at length about what you learned from every experience. Doesn't do you any good though.....

Oh yes, I need to go over the website again and to really figure out what appeals to me about this school (other than its location close to my house which is really the reason I'm applying there!)

Red diamonds?! 😕 I thought the rarest were blue, but my only source is the movie Titanic.

From what I read today (off the top of my head), 6 of the 10 highest prices paid for diamonds at auction were blue. It appears to be the popular choice, but not the rarest. Although I also read that a single blue diamond is found about once a year on average at some of the big mines.

I think I should go to Russia to find myself one of these machines. 😀 Help pay for my med school costs.

Should I really review my AMCAS in that much detail in the interview is closed-file? The interviewer won't have access to it.

Not that it really matters - every thing I have on AMCAS is really important to me so I can talk about it no problem. 😉

Damn - is it too late to finish my WashU secondary?

Yet another girly movie you admit to having seen :meanie:
 you read my mind!

glad the SA interview went well! sorry to hear you need a cage for your friend. I'm debating the same thing. I took the bold road today and left a VM saying "uh, haven't heard from you in 2 weeks, what's going on?"

I've tried to come up with a little system. I have basically memorized how I will respond to what I call "the big 5"

1) Why do you want to go into medicine?
2) How did you choose medicine? (Or, what is your story....similar to 1 but more of the process)
3) Why did you choose our school?
4) What are you strengths/weakness and why will you be a good doc
5) What the hell do you think is wrong with healthcare

After these are down solid, I have been working on answering questions on SDN feedback like, where do you see yourself in 10 years, who would you want to meet in history, etc..

Finally, I try to come up with a list of questions I have about the school.

My final backup question is to simply ask the interviewers about themselves (how they got into medicine and what they think about it) I don't know if this is a good idea but I figured I would try it if I don't have any q's about the school

So what do you say in the "tell me about yourself" situation?

Focus just on medicine or give a well-rounded picture of yourself?

I had a question like this for a job interview. I hated it. I talked about how it all began with my interests in the field. Luckily, it started about 5 years ago, so it would a good portion of my life that I actually remember (past 5 years old).

If I finish this drink, I might just go ahead and send the email. 😡

yea, good idea. I have my own opinions on healthcare but they probably aren't that great since I don't know a whole lot about all of it.

I am naturally middle of the road so I think i'll just stay with that

I went off the deep end with one of my interviews. Started talking about my obsession with fantasy/epic lit, bad scifi and camping - I don't think it's what they wanted to hear.

I *think* she's pissed at me b/c I bailed out on going out to a bar with her last week to see a band. Thing is, I bailed out with A WEEK'S NOTICE. It's not like I ditched her that night, and I gave her (what I thought were) some good reasons why I didn't want to go.

Since that time, VMs, IMs, and emails have not been returned. 😡

Geez - I don't get why people keep doing stupid high school crap like that well into adulthood. *commented edited to save the innocent from pure bitterness*

I hope everything gets worked out 😍

I seriously hope they don't ask me a bunch of questions about the heathcare industry and how I think it will do in the future.

Here's the worst interview experience I've ever had: senior back in high school and had an interview with UPenn. I put down Economics major as the major I wanted. I met with the interviewer, who happened to be a lawyer, at his firm in downtown Orlando. Seemed like a nice guy. I like the 1-1 interviews. He led me into his conference room. Not too big, 8 seats I suppose. Then 6 lawyers come in. I **** you not, this guy didn't even come in the room. I HATED every freakin' minute of this thing. I couldn't remember any of the interviewers' names. They asked too many questions on what I felt about the economy. Hell, most lawyers major in economics. Not fun at all. 👎

yes, the comment at the time was "Well. I guess I'll just have to get my new b/f to go with me then." So I told her "Ok, sounds good!" Too flippant? who knows. 🙄

 Durden, you won't have to practice for interviews. You're going to get like 1 question before they ask you what it will take to get you to come there, in which case you should respond with "money"

 I appreciate the vote of confidence. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get haunted by the ghost of Vandy mdapps past.

Oh man, you had an interview for college? I didn't even know that existed!

I doubt that would happen to you. Just be really humble (because a lot of people will assume that someone with your GPA and MCAT score is arrogant even if it's the furthest thing from the truth) and I think you'll do really well.

Did you apply to UCSF?

Oh man, you had an interview for college? I didn't even know that existed!

Ack, mine for Duke was a disaster. My Princeton one was some 80 year old alumni who spent over two hours recalling his great college exploits and pranks. Every other applicant was done in under half an hour.

I had an interview for Yale, which turned out to be my old YMCA league bball coach! LOL! I ended up not going because I was running late and couldn't find my shoes. Oh well, I'm not in debt since I went to UF!

 Princeton alumni are crazy. I used to live there when I was in high school.
