Welcome to Part 6! Everyone did a bang up job by hitting 10k in less than 12 days--11 days 19 hours and 18 minutes to be exact. A new record! 😀

For those not familiar with what we do here, Molly has been kind enough to put together a nice description.

Not sure what the Random thread is all about? Well, here's the answer to all your questions.

It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

good morning nikki and beary! freaking lurkers. 😛

Good morning Arsenic!! I was catching up on posts since my wi-fi only worked for approximately 30 seconds last night.

My folks are still here - will probably be leaving shortly. What is everybody up to today?

😀 😀 😀

ok 😉

do you have anything planned for today? i'm gonna go visit my nephew and spend the day with fam after i do these online lecture things for my week of inpatient geriatrics this week.

awww! have fun with your nephew! i'm probably just gonna be in the library all day. booooooo

are you serious? 🙁

booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, check out my sig stranger.
 😳 Sorry. I forgot peds was your first rotation and you did ob/gyn afterward. Geriatrics will be good for you; it's a useful specialty in somewhere someplace. 🙂

Alas, that's what happens when you steal wi-fi. :meanie:

Morning Q, you morning person you! 😀

How's the ant/post/sup/inf/lat/med etc. coming along?

Aww, that sounds nice! How old is your nephew?

I have spent the weekend with my folks. Once they leave am going to spend the rest of the day locked up silently by myself. :meanie:

Really need to study for Step 3. *sigh*

its cool, you're forgiven. 😛

thankfully its only 1 week of geriatrics stuck in the middle of my family med rotation so its basically 5 weeks of family med and 1 week of geriatrics in 3rd year. in 4th year they give us another 2-4 weeks of geriatrics. this is already on top of all the clinical geriatrics we did in the first 2 years like examining patients in nursing homes and even home visits. someplace someplace is BIG on geriatrics stuff but its no wonder when you look at what state i'm in.

I am learning new vocabulary words at a frightening pace. What was it I learned this morning....dermatomes. Yeah, the sections of the anterior thorax that each have a single nerve innervating them, those are the dermatomes. Apparently there are myotomes too....I peaked ahead. Fascinating.

On a completely unrelated note, did you guys have physical diagnosis textbooks? And if so, were they ridiculously into semantics? I mean, I just read like five pages explaining that I should call myself a medical student, not a student doctor, because it might confuse the patient into thinking that I'm a real doctor. And I'm going, you know, this whole thing already IS totally confusing, because I *am* a real doctor who is also a medical student.

Whoa, you had to do home visits?? 😱 *shoots self*

I had thought Iowa was big on geriatrics. They had some grant from some non-profit foundation about geriatrics education. But we never had to do home visits, phew. 😉

I know, that's why I said it would be good for you. If you're going to stay and practice there, I'm sure you'll need a lot of geriatrics experience. We have it too.

it was just 4 home visits in first year. then we had like 3-4 nursing home trips in 2nd year, a full week of inpt geriatrics in 3rd year, and finally about 2-4 weeks in 4th year.

its totally backfiring though, we've all had it forcefed down our throats so much that i only know of 1 person in my class that actually wants to do it.

Hehe, yeah, I remember that. I did have a physical diagnosis textbook - Mosby's I think. (Not one I kept for residency. ) There is probably 5-10 pages of useful info in that whole book. I think I just say read about usinig the opthalmoscope during the eye stuff, etc.

I can't remember if there was a good section in there about listening to murmurs and stuff. I had a different book for that. *looks around* hmm... apparently didn't keep that one either. 😳

That one person is going to be a gazillionaire. 😛

maybe eventually, right now i'm starting to think "**** it" and i'm just gonna do residency out of state. living in NY for a few years wouldnt be bad at all, my dad is up there. i love the freaking cold, LOVE it. even if just to have it be in the 50's or 60's outside, this crap of constant 80/70 days is enough to drive a person crazy after a few years.

he's 26 months. 😍

Awwww, how sweet!!! So fun! 😍

My niece is 3 (and a half, she will point out if you say she is 3. ) She's in preschool. How fast they grow up. Actually just last night I was looking at her baby pics of when she was first born. And we have a video of the first time she rolled over, first time she crawled, etc. Now she can write her whole name!!

Her name is Olivia, which I know you all probably know. 😳 She thinks it is SO funny to write Olivi-Q. I don't know why. I guess she just thinks Q is a funny letter. But she knows better, she just does it to be funny.

riiiiight, ok you go into that then. i'm not joking, if i had to go into geriatrics... as in no choice, i would drop out of medical school. i may not know exactly what i want yet, whether surgery or EM for example, but I sure as hell know what i dont want. dealing with patients day in and day out who bring in giant ziplock bags FILLED with medicine bottles and then complaining of 10 different complaints everyday would be absolute torture.

Heh, I feel the other way around. I definitely want to end up in the South somewhere. If I were meant to be a cold-adapted creature, I'd be a lot more blubbery than I am. 😉

MI >>>>> NY 😉

Though I love being close to my family too so understand that. 🙂

I totally agree on the cold - I couldn't stand it being hot all the time. I LOVED UTSW path but didn't rank them super highly almost solely because they were in Dallas. I think I would love the Texas culture but not the climate.

Q is the best letter in the alphabet. 😍 Smart kid. 😉

I feel neutral about geriatrics. But I know what you mean, because I feel that way about OB/GYN. No freaking way, not for me, not now, not ever. I'll see my few weeks of the miracle of birth and various female problems, and that's it for the rest of my life. 😛

I 😍 TX.

Wow, I am SO blubbery!!! I'm a perfect fit for the cold weather!! 😀

I just hate being cold. I'd rather sweat than freeze. But all in all, I'm pretty stoic about climate. It's not like there's much you can do about it, short of moving, and that's not really an option for most of us. I've lived up north, and I've lived down south, and like I said, I just hope I'll end up down south. That is all. 🙂

awwww. funny kid story of the week, last week i was interviewing a married couple who was coming to this practice for the first time. i was taking their history and their 3 year old boy also had my name. so in the middle of the interview he walks up to me and he's like, "Whats your name?" and I was like, "same as yours buddy, my name is ---------". it didnt even register. "whats your name?" was asked about another 10 times and each time he just couldnt understand that we had the same name. talk about a walking example of the developmental stages..... so eventually i just told him to call me doc, which did register. so i was doc to him for the rest of the visit. 😀

It takes a special person to do geriatrics. Keep in mind, though, that there are plenty of alert, oriented, friendly, funny geriatric people in addition to the "gomers". I worked in nursing homes as a speech therapist for several years and I was torn about working there. I hated having to work with someone with advanced dementia, but when I loved talking with my CVA patients about "the war" or simpler times.

Ultimately I left the nursing home biz because it's just too depressing. I was providing services that were pretty much unnecessary to people literally days and hours before their deaths. And the companies I worked for pushed us to do chart audits on dementia/Alzheimer's wards to "find" patients. Ugh.

i like the south, too. Except I REALLY like the seasonal change in the leaves, and you don't get that south of Tennessee. I like cool Autumn days, but having mild winters is nice too (as long as I can get north to snowmobile!). I would LOVE to move back to Mobile, but my husband is too afraid of hurricanes for some reason. He's never been through one, but from what he's seen on TV he's scared. I keep telling him I don't want to live ON the ocean, and that 20 miles inland is usually really safe. He rolls his eyes. And we live in a high-tornado area!

home visits give you a whoooooooooooooooooole different perspective, though. I did in-home psychiatric crisis assessments for close to 3 years, and we got such better information than in-office visits and phone conversations.

that said, I'd be OK if I never had to do them again. 😛

Wow, I am SO blubbery!!! I'm a perfect fit for the cold weather!! 😀

haha.. great minds think alike. 😉 😀

she's just extremely friendly. and if there are little boys and little girls on the playground, she'll always play with the little boys.

 So "friendly" is the new word for that? 😛

My niece is so sweet but really really shy. She sort of plays alongside other kids but doesn't talk to them too much.

You know what I hate? I hate when you pay off a credit card balance and you get the next month's bill with the finance charges from the previous month. You'd think they'd be happy that we paid off our bill, but NO - they keep asking for more $$$.

i hate grad school haha
Also, I can only sleep every other day for some reason. Like friday night I slept well, last night I woke up every hour so Im tired (and I have to go into the lab again today, and I have a ton of studying to do), now tonight I should sleep fine.

yeah, i totally feel you. in the first 2 years of someplace someplace all the lectures are recorded and posted on the web later in the day so....

Ah jeez. All my business classes at UF were web-based. I'd watch them at 2x speed. Not sure how this would work for medschool. All those insane words would get combined. Anteriorlateralcollateralphosphofructokinasecruciateligamentationsyes

LMAO. Can you listen to them backwards to see if you can get any satanic messages? 😉

But it is the strangest thing. You get used to the fast voice so when you hear the professor in person, you're like "holy crap, this dude talks way too slow. hurry the hell up!"
