A few ground rules. Everything you post must be RANDOM and more importantly, only peripherally related to the MCAT. See my example post below. I now await Beary's shirtless pic of Carl Edwards. C'mon Beary, A-man is dying to see it. 😀

This is Ana's example:

Yeah definitely like a combo of mini Cuba, mini Haiti, mini Jamaica, and then some!!!!! But definitely like little cuba fo' sure!!!!! 😛

I was 90 miles off of Cuba from Key West 😀

i have to agree.....i wanna try water skiing next

Meh, water skiing isn't that fun. I was the only one in my family would could do it. After 5 minutes, you're like, ok, what next. I could never get up on a wakeboard, but it looks fun as hell. 👍

Tubing is the ultimate! I was driving our boat at like 35mph and one of my friends was a complete n00b and didn't know how to "fall" off the tube when thrown off. He had back pain that entire summer. I know it's mean to laugh, but he was skimming the water surface like a pebble.

On the same day, my other friend had his pants ripped off while he fell off the tube!!! They were like $40 basketball shorts (not real bathing suit). They were floating when we went back to get them and my brother was reachign for it by hand. My other friend said don't touch it and tried using the pole with a hook. He sunk the damn pants! Never found them again. Our friend had to put on some khaki pants when he got back on. LOL!

Chicago is clean. NY isn't.

I'm going to have to agree with you two on this one. I love Chi town like nothing. Definitely could see myself living there some day in the future. The people seemed a lot friendlier up there especially the Indians. We were there for a wedding and unlike in my hometown everyone seemed to let loose a little bit easier and easier to talk to. If that wasn't enough, there were soooooo many nice suburbs around where you could build a decent size house and still make way to the main part of the city via their awesome public transportation systems. It isn't right by the coast so its not as dangerous to live in as NYC can be. Overall, there was a charm to Chi town that I loved a whole lot.

I've done regular tubing, but not one tied to a boat....sounds like fun though

hey jlw

can you explain the difference between disorganized, derailed and circumstantial thought patterns to me really quickly. im so screwed for tomorrow. 🙁

i havent been able to get the books from my friends yet, all i have is the pocket DSM-IV-TR
ok, off the top of my head- sorry, all my good stuff's at work. if you have Kaplan and Sadock, either the synopsis or the huge 2-volume thing, they have a great chapter defining all kinds of psych terms. (if you don't have it, let me know- my copy's at work but I'll be at the office tomorrow and can fax/email a copy of it to you)

disorganized- jumps from topic to topic, no clear pattern of connections, may be non-sensical
derailed- 😕 I've never used this. similar to tangential? goes off topic, sometimes no obvious train of thought connections but you can follow that bit of conversation until they switch again
circumstantial- tangential thinking which eventually gets around to the original point- think circumference- talks in a circle, gets back to the start.

oh man really gotta go.....gotta finish folding clothes that my hubby now started doing 😀

later dudes and dudettes!

penguin! thank you, that does help. awwwwwwww, you were right. i so need you on this rotation. i dont know which books i'm gonna get from my firends, i think they mentioned sadock. i'm gonna have to do some mad reading this weekend to make up for how much of an idiot i'm gonna look like over the next 2 days. whatever, i'll have 2 weeks to make up for it afterwards.

thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you... * infinity 😉

A-i'm using the first aid book to study for my final--this thing rocks! i wish i had been using it all along

its a nice outline. its missing A LOT of info though, but if you know everything in that book by heart and UNDERSTAND it all, not just memorize it - you'll destroy the boards. your score is totally directly related to how many times you looked at that book cover to cover. unfortunately, i only got through it twice. i swear to god nik, had i had 2 more weeks with that book i would have killed step 1. i just ran out of time trying to understand everything first. ughhh... lessons learned. no big deal, i'll still end up as an EM or surg resident somewhere but that thought kills me.

*chalks up volunteer hour #2* :meanie:

as far as application, disorganized thinking is a key characteristic of schizophrenia and the other psychotic disorders. difficult (if not impossible) to redirect if they're seriously ill. if it's mild, it can be directable.

tangential is how I live my daily life. that and circumstantial are usually fairly easy to redirect, and generally indicative of anxiety, depression, or another affective disorder- too much on your mind, thoughts coming very fast, possibly intrusive thinking... again, overall easier to work with, as the patient is redirectable, and often has (or can be taught) the insight needed to recognize that they're doing it.

ok, i need to get out of here. i have to be up at 5 and still have about an hour of reading to do for all my sdn slacking tonight so that gives me 4 hours.

thank you again penguin

goodnight nikki, ana, EVERYONE. you're all super funny, too funny. you keep sucking me in.

i understand what you're saying. 😍 😍 i can't imagine how i'll feel after step 1--i know everyone who takes that wishes they had prepared differently--it's just hindsight.

i'm using the old skool 2002 version of first aid that i bought for 10 cents.

NY subways are disgusting :barf:

Yes - very bad. Though I guess the whole city is much safer and cleaner than it used to be. I haven't been in there in, whoa, like 11 years??!! 😱

I really need to travel more. I had this whole lovely Colorado Springs vacation planned out for after graduation but it didn't work out. I also really want to go back to Vegas, Montreal, Yellowstone, and the Black Hills/Badlands. I have never been to Yosemite or Glacier either.

have any of you ever been to hawaii? i would die to go back there

I would like to go to Hawaii in theory but that flight is a bit long for me. :scared:

US and Canadian continental flights = OK
overseas/Hawaii = not OK

Oh, speakings of flights. My best friend (the one that called me in Detroit on her layover) went to Italy for a few weeks. On the way back, they had a layover in Amsterdam and then had a long flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. Some lady died on her flight like half way through! She said that they called for any medical personnel on the plane, and worked on her in the aisle for a while. After she was dead, they just put her body back in the seat and covered it with blankets. 😕

So jlw will help friends for free sometimes. :meanie: 😉

I used Blueprints to study for the shelf A-man and thought it was really good. Throughout the rotation I read Blueprints, that's it, and honored the shelf. Though it sounds like you are on the psych rotation from hell. 🙁

I don't really know how to play WoW at level 60. Everybody says it's a totally different game. I just logged on to my toon and was standing around like, "What do I do now?"

I'm in an end-game guild that does lvl 60 raids every night but as much as I love WoW I just don't want to make that kind of commitment (to raid every night from about 7:30-10:30).

In SIX DAYS when I start autopsy I'm not going to have time for that anyway. *panics*

why do people keep on insisting this? it is more dangerous to live in CAMDEN, NJ than living in NYC, or its buroughs.

http://www.morganquitno.com/cit06pop.htm

NYC doesn't even crack the top 25. I'm sorry, but had you said this back in the 1980s, then yes, I would agree that NYC wasn't so hot. and i'll be straight up... the only place i've actually was worried i might get attacked was in BALTIMORE, MD. It was a work rule that we didn't leave the office alone after dark.

Now look at the safest cities. Overall, there are FOUR new york cities. Number two is a town over from my house and number eleven is right by my school.

please, let's stop with this myth. [/rant]

Glad to see good old Reading, PA at #5 in the small cities :scared:

Interesting list. I knew Detroit was bad but had no idea Flint was #4 most dangerous. 😱

Flint is a ghost town... most of the factories around there closed down twenty years ago and there is absolutely nothing there... If you ever saw Bowling for Columbine, Michael Moore profiles the city (that's his hometown) and it's really quite sad...

Everyone keeps talking about how Bodymore, Murderland is bad and not to go to John Hopkins because of that reason, but no one talks about how bad STL is and not to go to WUSTL...
