how's your studying going guys? are you freaking out? burned out?

this is our stress relief thread....or our group anxiety thread, whatever..... 😀

for those of you that have no idea what the mcat random threads are about, check out molly's explanation:

MollyMalone said:
It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO POST HERE, you're welcome to jump in at anytime. Here's the final tally from part 7:

really?? I was wondering about that. I guess I just haven't heard about dancers and eating disorders as much.

It's hard being a parent. I want her to do something that she likes but I worry about potential consequences. 🙁

At least piano will be harmless enough. She can start piano lessons in the next year or two and those will be free!

I started piano at 5 and took lessons through 18. I loved it.

I was not a very good dancer - I tried jazz, and then gymnastics, but it just wasn't for me. I ended up being an all-stater in softball and basketball, so sports were my thing.

Yeah I figure she can try out different things until she finds something she likes. 🙂 I figured starting with dance or gymnastics would be fun for her at this age and she can keep doing it if she likes it or try something else if she doesn't.

I was horrible at sports - OMG. I'm sure gymnastics or dance would have been just as bad for me. Music was my thing. I play piano and I played trombone and French horn in elementary school and high school band. 🙂

My husband is hoping the girls like tennis. 😉

Hey guys, drive by posting.

I was just watching the news and I wanted to sign on and make sure that JLW & Beary & S&M & any of you other Yankees didn't drive off the road or anything. :scared: That weather looks nasty. Please be safe!

No plane delay. Thank GOD! 🙂 And the weather in DFW is actually kinda nice.

A-man: Congrats on being done! I hope you didn't show your classmates up too much on that shelf exam 😉

(On a side note, after railing against UTSW for so long, my mom drove me around the campus this afternoon and it's really beautiful. I can't imagine it if I actually end up really liking this school. :wow: Somehow I doubt a beautiful hospital can really make up for the gunner atmosphere though)

my .02- in the 5 months I've been doing the job I was at today, I've seen one gymnast. and probably 15+ dancers. every kid is 10-19, some boys, mostly girls. any type of activity where body appearance is scrutinized/easier to notice or is weight-dependent seems to have a higher proportion of EDs- gymnastics, dance, tennis, cheerleading, rowing/crew, wrestling, boxing, skating (S&M- tell me if I'm wrong on this one). don't see nearly as many who play basketball, soccer, football, baseball/softball.

my other .02- listen to her about what she wants to do. if she tries it and hates it, she has to finish that class but never has to take another one. but she has to finish it. and then she can move onto something else she wants to try. limit the choices to 2 (MAXIMUM three), let her pick from those only. (kind of like saying "you can wear the red dress or the green dress" and when she picks blue, you say "red or green?") it gives them a sense of having some power, and helps teach them how to make decisions.

It's frickin freezing Mr Bigglesworth......
 yes it is

they were saying tonight that 70 between STL and KC has hours-long delays due to 16 in of snow being dumped on Columbia :scared: :wow:

well aren't you sweet? 🙂 I'm doing fine- spent the day at work. Roads weren't too bad going in, even better coming home. I'm not sure of the exact amount, but I'd say we had 4-6 inches of snow at my house.

Now the big decision: to shovel the driveway or not? I've got 4WD now, so I can just go over it and into the garage, but then I become "that neighbor". 😳

Thanks for your thoughts jlw. 🙂 Being a parent is so tough - I just don't want to mess her up.

My idea to do gymnastics or dancing were really based on the fact that those are the only two classes I could find in town for her age group that work with my class schedule. There was a T-ball team that I could probably manage but honestly I can't see her enjoying that as much as gymnastics or dance.

My main goal here is just to get her out of the house and socializing with people other than our immediate family and my close friend and her daughter. She is EXTREMELY shy in public but is good about taking direction from other people. I think one of these classes could help bring her out of her shell just a little bit.

Maybe I just need to stop over-thinking it - take her to each of the classes (because the first class at each place is free) and see which she likes better.

Hey VD! I am so glad you made it to Dallas safely and on time!

We got less than an inch of snow here. Just missed it.

UTSW is gorgeous. I absolutely loved it there. 😍 Best wishes on your interview! :luck:

omg....SDN is like crack....withdrawal is so hard!!

I bow down to you, SDN, with my 3000th post!!!

before I make things sound too dire, remember that most kids in any of these programs don't develop any problems at all. I think your last thought is great- letting her try both and then pick. and I think the choices themselves are good ones- active, lots of opportunity to socialize, improve gross motor skills,
do fun dress-up stuff and be girly..

but seriously- the underlying stuff to the EDs tend to be power/control rather than actually about weight- it's just that their bodies are the only things they feel in control of. that's why I suggest giving her a little structured control now. and I have other soapbox rants about parenting stuff, but I'll spare all of you. 👍

That's a very good point. 👍 I do try to let her think she has a bit of control over her decisions but that can be hard sometimes (as I'm sure you know, three year olds don't always make great ones! LOL)

And feel free to get on your soapbox about parenting stuff with me. 🙂 I'm always on the look out for ways to parent my girls better.

I JUST HAD THE MOST KICK A$$ DAY SHADOWING!! Finally got to make good on the shadowing of this plastic surg that has been in the works for like 8 months. It was awesome! I saw some incredible things. Mainly, a guy who had lipo done by an OB/GYN. Um..yeah...an OB/GYN! So, needless to say there were some problems...now on dialysis, huge hole in his abdomen, and the skin on his scrotum fell off. Yeah, major probs. It was so awesome to be able to see that! Lots of breast reconstruction due to cancer and the tattooing of a nipple/areola on a reconstruction. Awesome! Of course, then there was the run off the mill Botox. Can't wait to go into the OR! ...I guess I better ask! LOL.

morning y'all!

looks like i'll be at UIC for an md/phd interview january 28-30! yay! 😀 chicago is awesome, and the program sounds great, so i'm very excited.

Congrats S&M!!!! That's totally awesome. :hardy:

Did I hear someone mention bowling??? I totally suck balls at bowling. Seriously!!! I went to someone's bday bash yesterday at the bowling alley and I barely got 50 something odd points. Maybe 59 at most. The girl who's party it was had 5 lanes reserved and so we played this competition where there were like 4-5 of us on one lane and 4-5 of at the other lane next to ours and we competed against each other. Well a long story short, this guy on the other team got 120 points. I was like what the heck??? But anyhow, I totally suck at bowling. Also, if I start playing and play 2 games, there'll be one game where I'll do decent and the other I'll totally suck at. So I either start off good and then go downhill or I start off bad and pick up later a bit. But I never have consistency. Ohh well I go to hang out mainly.

I just got back from suckage at bowling. Didn't break 100 🙁

Ohh you are the one that mentioned bowling!!!

Don't worry we'll suck at bowling together cuz I totally got like the lowest number of points of the people I was playing with last night. Started out ok and then had a few bad rounds during the game. Ohh well.

2 questions

1. why would an ob/gyn be stupid enough to perform a procedure like that so out of their scope??!?!?!

2. why would the patient go to an ob/gyn for lipo?!?!?!

glad you saw some good stuff PW but damn, thats insane.

my thoughts exactly .... and did PW say this was a GUY having an ob/gyn do this to him?? Crazy!

Reminds me of when I was shadowing an ob/gyn, though. I looked at the patient list for the day and there was listed in the gender column that he was seeing a man that day. Obviously a typo ....

I think it depends on the type of dance you do. I find a lot of eating disorders in western dances. But in my Indian classical dance forms we don't have rules that are strict in what we are allowed to eat and most people who start learning from and early age tend to be fit but not anorexic cuz they can still eat what they want.

Also if you were learning contemporary or salsa or swing that wouldn't cause you to become anorexic I don't think. But some of those can't really be learned til you are a bit older like swing and salsa.

Ballet and gymnastics is what I'd be more concerned with but I'd also talk to the people who are experts on those things because it might not be that bad as it seems. We might just be overly concerned or we might be rightfully concerned. Better to talk with the experts on these things.
