how's your studying going guys? are you freaking out? burned out?

this is our stress relief thread....or our group anxiety thread, whatever..... 😀

for those of you that have no idea what the mcat random threads are about, check out molly's explanation:

MollyMalone said:
It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO POST HERE, you're welcome to jump in at anytime. Here's the final tally from part 7:

Congrats!!! Just curious -- what'd they offer you? (pm if you feel like it)
All I got today was another hold. 🙁
🙁 That sucks, Pemb. But maybe you'll be getting that snail mail from UTSA today! 🙂

They just made some vague reference to it in the email; said I should be getting a snail mail letter with the offer. I just didn't read the email that closely last night. Too busy doing cartwheels 😀

Curious - do you think a physician calling a patient from home in the evening while caring for her child (ie the patient can hear the child talking and occasionally the physician has to tell the child to "hold on a second sweetie") is unprofessional?

It's a whole huge debate on another one of my message boards and I'm curious what the pre-health/health professional randomites think. 😉

This is quite a funny football play:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YnnnnyMjCw

I was going to call false start when they played it the first time in real-time. Then I saw the slow-mo replay and it's very trick. 👍 Reminds me of The Longest Yard (Sandler remake) I think. He, the QB, walks to the coach and says he can't hear him. Ball snaps to the RB (iirc) and passes to Sandler. I don't think anyone in D1-A college football would fall for that crap, though. 😉

Did you see WVU vs. Cincy? 4 offensive lineman would freeze their position after the ball was snapped, would not protect the QB, and just fall to the ground. It was like they were trying to be funny. They did it twice in a row.

No I do not. Doctors are people too. 🙄

At least you are getting a call, so feel grateful.
This was my feeling - doctors are very busy people. Heck, I appreciate any time it's my doctor calling herself and not the nurse.

Most people on my other board (parents, very few who work in healthcare) thought it was unprofessional. 😕

What do you mean a doctor taking a phone call? At the workplace or at home? If you answer the phone at home with your child crying in the background, it's none of their damn business. Do people expect doctors not to have children? 🙄

If you're at work with your kid for whatever reason, tell them pediatrics to get those idiots off your back that get easily offended at the drop of a hat.

I don't think the situation you described oxeye is unprofessional at all. Now if the patient was dying and the doctor was trying to change a diaper at the same time though.......

Sounds to me an issue of pedastal syndrome. They put these people up on a throne and don't realize that all professionals have children. If they are calling you (especially after hours) b/c they care and are on call 24/7 for your health, then you should be grateful.

If they think its unprofessional then tell them they can get a doctor that works only 9-3 and has the nurse call them back 2 days after they leave a message for him (or not get a call at all). I swear, some people are extremely rude and demanding. :mad;

The patient called during business hours, and the doctor called her back during the evening at home while she was taking care of her child. Better than waiting until the next morning for the return call right?

I'd return the call at my convenience. If I know I'll be busy in the morning with no time and I have to call myself, I'd probably do it at home with free time. If I think I could fit it in somewhere in the morning, I'd call then. If I'm a "busy" doctor and I can do the work at work, I like to take the free time for my family. 😉

The patient shouldn't care. They're the one that is in need of the advice/help and they probably want the news as early as possible. I don't care if my doctor is wind surfing, I want the news asap.

Okay - just read some new information on the debate. The patient left the message the day before she got the call in the evening.

That makes it a little less okay in my eyes - it would have been better to get a call back the same day, but that can't always happen. And the results the patient wanted showed nothing was wrong so it's not like person's health was being compromised (they were just worried about it longer).

Ehh - but this turns into an issue of how quickly the doctor should be calling with results, not whether or not it was professional to do so at home on her own time while caring for her child.

even so, not all phone calls need to be returned (or can be returned) that day. Sad but true is that the doctor can't always call you back in the same day and if its not pressing I'm sure there are matters that are more pressing.

They are just pissed off that they had to wait for the results (which I agree is nervewracking) but they need to realize that maybe the doctor wanted to talk to the patient personally and not have a nurse tell them information if the patient had any questions. Its frustrating being a patient but many doctors are overwhelmed sadly and they can't do everything (but somehow we expect them too). I do the same thing with my doctor because I don't get a return call back in a "timely" fashion, but I also realize the reality of the situation.

Ooooo I found super cute shoes for the wedding I'm in! I'll totally wear these again! 🙂

But Ross is so dangerous... went in for shoes... came out with a shirt, a sweater, two headbands and shoes... What the hell will I do with this sweater? I live in TX! Now I need to get in to Michigan so I can wear all these cute clothes I bought!

Edit: Jeebus - I'm pretty sure this is the most girly thing I've ever posted on SDN. 😱

😳 He was kinda asking for it. I mean, you go on Jerry Springer, what do you expect? Fresh baked cookies? 😛

I'm probably going to hell with you. I couldn't help myself when the big guy carried one away backstage and the dwarf is hitting him.

But yeah, I agree. Oprah it ain't

IMPORTANT

JURY DUTY SCAM:

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is included below).

Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summons for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced.

Fall for it and your identity could be stolen, reports CBS. In this con, someone calls pretending to be a court official who threateningly says a warrant has been issued for your arrest because you didn't show up for jury duty. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Sometimes they even ask for credit card numbers. Give out any of this information and bingo! Your identity just got stolen.

The scam has been reported so far in 11 states, including Minnesota, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado . This (scam) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they're with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Check it out here:
http://www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel05/092805.htm

PLEASE PASS THIS ON. ESPECIALLY TO ANY SENIOR CITIZENS YOU KNOW EVEN IF THEY DON'T HAVE EMAIL, PRINT & GIVE THEM A COPY.

I couldn't stop laughing at how the shorter guy would get off the ground. If there weren't chairs or wall rails, he'd be there forever.

Well, I'll see ya in hell!

Absolutely not un-professional. I think it is courteous of the physician to be making an effort to call pts in the evening. Physicians have families too. There are certain things it would be unprofessional to be doing (like if somebody could hear me in a WoW battleground or something :meanie: ) but if your child needs some attention, that's life.

Obviously totally agreed with mushy and you. I really don't even see could be seen as unprofessional about it.

I'm sure there's an extra special place in hell for Jerry :meanie:

Yeah, I broke my 'no laugh' rule when the smaller one scooched across the floor and ran into the other guy's leg

You sure one can get by in Canada with just a sweater? I think I'd need a beanie, gloves, jacket, multiple sweaters, two pairs of shoes, lol.

Parka, mukluks, googles, etc

Actually, it's unseasonably warm here right now. I wish it would quit raining and just snow already!

Well - geez, I hope I'm not getting doctor arrogance already as a first-year resident, but honestly - if I were reporting normal results, I would have a nurse/secretary/employee of some type do it. I would certainly call a pt with a significant abnormal result, but if just to say "everything's fine!" I wouldn't want to be making those calls.

I don't even like to call clinicians when we find malignancy on surg path though. 😳 Obviously, that's a different situation, because I think if they send something to path and then it shows up in their inbox they should be responsible enough to read our report.

I would look hot in mukluks. 😎

It's pretty hot here, too. It was 85 today so I was around the house with only shorts on. Supposedly a cold front is coming through tonight that has caused flooding in Alabama and Georgia already so it should be nice tomorrow.

Apparently, you can wear mukluks in the south too

Must...call...mother...back... :scared:

Wish me luck. I'm actually going to go get in bed for physical comfort during this convo. 😳

Aw Beary, hope all goes as well as can be expected under the circumstances. I wish there was some way we could help 🙁
