hi a-man!!

in other news, PBandJ received something special in the mail today...

A BIG FAT ENVELOPE FROM UIC COLLEGE OF MEDICINE!

They've offered me a spot as a Medical Scholars Program student!! That's the MD/PhD program in Urbana-Champaign. YAY so excited as this is my first acceptance. 😀

It does get a little complicated...I have heard nothing yet post-interview from the MD/PhD UIC Chicago campus (prob. my top choice), and this letter only mentions my acceptance as a Med Scholars Student. So I dunno if the medical school has to decide on my app again...or if the Chicago MD/PhD program just makes their own decision and that sticks. I tried to get these details from the two programs during my interviews, but neither one seemed to know much about the other, except to say that their decisions were completely separate. Oh well, guess they'll be getting a nice phone call from me on Monday!

s&m!

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!

thanks nik, its a pic of the inner doors the paramedics bring the trauma resus patients through. i shot it with my digital camera the other night. that night was CRAZY, i had my hands in a mans chest. i updated my blog about it.

i know! I read that earlier😱 how are you doing sweetie? you work this weekend?

ive got tomorrow off, sunday im in the hospital.

in other news, its official.... EMERGENCY MEDICINE will be my specialty.... well, at least the one i'll be applying to next year.

i'm committed, thats it.... no more flip flopping. EM or bust. 😎

the only thing that sucks is that i have to set up 3 different externships for next year, ie a month at 3 different hospitals doing an away emergency medicine rotation to meet the program director, residents, get letters, etc... just about all my days off now will be spent in the emergency department here as well meeting my schools EM attendings and just picking up as much EM as I can before I go to other programs. depending on how crappy my 4th year schedule comes out in a few weeks i may not be able to do the core EM rotation here before going away so i'm gonna try to basically pick it all up on my own time so that I dont look like an idiot on my away rotations.

yay work yourself to death!!!!

nah, this should be fun. right now on trauma surg there are days we finish by noon when we arent on call and just seeing post op patients in clinic or something so its not like im working myself if i go to the ED from 1-5 that day.

congrats on figuring out your specialty.....you rock...what else can i say? 👍 👍 😀

thanks sweetie, took me forever but it totally makes sense to me. i love EVERYTHING, so why not choose a specialty where you'll see everything? plus, no rounds or beeper is awesome. in emergency med, full time = 12, twelve hour shifts a month. so yeah, lots of time for family and having a life outside of the hospital. if i ever need more money id just pick up more shifts, if i need more of a break id just work less shifts. its just perfect. can you tell im kinda in love with the specialty?!?!

A-man,

just finished reading your blog. Its funny how great minds think alike because as soon as you said you want a bit of IM and a bit of surgery, the first thought popped in my head was EM and then your next sentence was EM as a possibility. hahahaha

I think that has many benefits besides the above mentioned. (i.e. shift hours and no call) 😀

Of course you could always be one of those crazy people who do a joint IM/EM residency. That's too hardcore though.

ha, yeah. trust me, EM is hardcore enough for me. the problem with the dual residencies is that most people that come out of those programs go into either EM or IM jobs, not both. so i dont think its worth it, at least not for me.

Yeah true that. I know a DO who went to Nova and then went up north and midwest to do a dual residency in IM/EM. however he mainly works as an EM physician so I don't know how that helps except that if he later decides to do IM he'll be able to do it. However by that time if he's not practicing it he may have forgotten a lot of that stuff. So to me it seems more like a pain then a good thing.

I think if I got over my fear of doing procedures, I'd consider EM too but I'm not sure if I'd be as good at procedures as I would at a non procedural type of thing like IM. But who knows what will happen when I make it to med school. Should I make it to med school that is.

you get the whole weekend off beary? i hope so, youve been working soooo hard lately. 🙁

Hey! Yeah I have been working way way too hard. 🙁

In theory I got the whole weekend off but ended up leaving a few hours of stuff for tomorrow. But no call, no unexpected things, and will be able to sleep and rest both days. 🙂
