my new avatar is a pic i took at the trauma center. the place is sooooo cool guys. the trauma rooms are in a lot of ways even better set up than the ORs, ie there are IV bags already hanging and ready to go the second the patient is wheeled in, everything is already laid out, etc......

i forgot to tell you guys i was on the news the other night! an 18 year old girl got hit in the head with a shot put after school during track and field practice and she was airlifted to our trauma center. i was part of the team that went up to get her from the helicopter. i knew i was gonna be on tv because as i was helping wheel her to the elevator i could see 2 news helicopters hovering over us. so yeah..... i was on the news but didnt get a chance to see it since i was on call all day/night, the ones that saw it told me they showed the video of the team and I taking her off the chopper as they described what happened to her over the video. growing up in south florida ive seen them show video of doctors getting the pts from the chopper all the time, to actually be one of the ones in the video now was awesome. 😀

btw, those trauma rooms look like a scaled down version of the hospital in house.

And no second look for me. 🙁 Invitations went out last week and I guess I'm not invited because I'm a sure thing for that school.

Oh well - makes sense, but I was kind of looking forward to it.

Awwww that's soooooo cute. I didn't realize the younger one isn't yet 2 years old. For some reason I was thinking she's already 2. hahaha

The cutest thing was when I was in Chicago and a family friend's daughter was 2 years old but she was speaking like full blown proper english sentences. I was soooo amazed because most of the kids I'd ever met that age were never people you clearly understood and not babies who had clear sentences. This girl was so smart that her mom or dad was telling us that if she noticed her dad wasn't keeping both hands on the steering wheel or turning around when he should be facing forward, she'd point it out to him. Some might call that bratty, but for a 2 year old to recognize those things that was incredible to me.

She was so adorable. Later on when I was back in my hometown I saw a pic on my friend's fridge of that little girl's mom at the same age and it was crazy cuz the little girl looks just like her mom looked at that age even though she's mixed.

yep, first time. next time im on call im just gonna set my tivo to record the news casts just in case. :laugh:

as for the look of the trauma rooms, yeah. they are the only rooms in the hospital that have sliding doors like that, not even the ORs are set up that way. the trauma center was built in 1994 so its really very modern and totally looks like something out of a movie. check this out for a description of what i get to play with for a month, i love my school:

I went running in the park again today. I was completely comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt but then this woman jogs past as I'm cooling down in, I kid you not, sweatpants, sweatshirt, thermal vest and a ski cap...

WTF? It was about 75 degrees!! :wow:

Beary,

all the joking and SDN-ness aside, and having met you in person, you should expect more letters like this in the future! You're a great person - you care about other people and realize this isn't just a "job". I realize you're still young and fresh, but I think you'll spend your whole career and life being a great doctor and person.

And this is a great way to let people know how much path makes a difference in a personal way. Many people regard path as a "cold" specialty with no contact, but the little things you did really made a difference in that woman's life - and she'll never forget it, and neither will the physician.

Just think how relieved the physician will be when he/she gets tests results back and sees your name on the report. Things won't always be happy and super, but this physician will always know you put 100%+ into your work.

Good job, beary. VERY good job!

This is definitely an outlier, but the general rule is that girls talk earlier than boys. In fact, by age 3, girls have an exponential amount of vocabulary compared to same-aged boys. But it catches up in primary school.

On the other hand, boys tend to be better at gross-motor skills (running, climbing, etc.). Everything comes out in the wash by primary school.

At 2-2.5, I would expect a typically developing girl to have sentences ranging from 3-4 words up to 8 words.

Higher OR lower values can indicate "issues" but not always.

I used to see a boy for therapy and his mother was so proud that he could say his ABCs and count to 50 (and recognize letters and numbers) at 1.5 years old. Yeah - that's not always a good thing.

Why is it not a good thing? (Seriously - I don't know). My instinct as well would be to be "proud" that my 1.5 year old could count to 50.

That's an indicator for autism spectral disorders, PDD, and many other neurological issues. It's not always the case - counting to 50 alone isn't going to make a kid autistic, but it can be a red flag

I've also put in for a temporary post-hold through next Thursday so I can get my MCAT studying in without my #1 distraction!

The hold will go on as soon as Mushy wills it so!

Yeah I wouldn't have expected her to be able to speak proper full sentences at that age. She's a lot more ahead then most kids her age. Her mom graduated from USF med school in the late 90's and went on to do an IM residency elsewhere.

That's interesting Meg - I've known in my family at least that how early someone talks is not an indication of how "intelligent" they are.

Both my girls have been on the later side with talking (the younger one more so). I tell myself it really doesn't matter but it's sooooo hard when you are around other parents who constant brag about how smart their children are because they talk so much better than other kids their age (ie - referring to my children). 😡

I've just spent a couple hours studying physics for my test tomorrow. I hate studying for open book/note/homework tests. It's just such a different strategy for me.

They might just be shy. I seem to recall you saying that at least one of your daughters is a bit shy. But yeah Meg thanks for that information. That makes a lot of sense.

Ohh and I hope i didn't come off as bragging or anything like that about that girl Oxeye. 🙂

i just meant it impressed me cuz its not something that happens as often.

Oh no worries Guju - you didn't come off as bragging. My little sister was actually just like the girl you described so I know kids like that exist. 🙂

My older daughter is very shy in public, but she talks normally at home. Until recently she was quite a bit behind other kids her age but is catching up rather quickly now.

The little one isn't shy at all. 😉 She's doing better now with her words, but was significantly behind for awhile but is also catching up. She has about 20 words now I think. Though the little bugger won't say "mama" anymore!! She can and knows that is the word to refer to me but calls me "dada" now because her sister laughs hysterically everytime she does it.

No it's always been #1...from the beginning UCSF and Stanford were tied for #1, and I woulda had a hard time choosing between them. Now the decision is easier, if any :scared:

Thanks for the encouragement! But really...this IS Stanford, the most competitive medical school to get in (aside from Mayo).

That's also what happened to Andrew Fire when he applied for undergrad....and look at what happened to him 😉
