Despite the threat of being banned by certain evil Randomite moderators on power trips, I couldn't resist posting a nice set of breasts.

Happy Thanksgiving Randomites!

thanks for the hugs and well wishes. ill be retaking in april. headed to the library to get some hard core verbal (philosophy, dickens) then home to pull out all tyhe styudy stuff. I'm sure havin orgo physics and bio won't hurt lol.

I just had this random realization out of nowhere...last night, I, a Russian, discussed my crush on an Afghani guy with my Filipina friend. Once I spilled my guts to her and my Iraqi friend, I discussed my shoulder pain with my Indian med student friend. Following her suggestions, I called the clinic today, where I spoke to a Native receptionist and made an appointment with my South African doctor....only in North America, seriously! I am asking to be referred to a physiatrist, so let's see what race/nationality s/he will be now!

Haha.. that's awesome.

I'm feeling 😍 and at home here on the MCAT board... 4 more months til lucky number 3!

I'm having a pretty good day...today my U of Alberta GPA calculation was posted, and it's much higher than I expected! Cumulative is 3.61 and pre-req is 3.59; moreover, they are going to take my 2 fall courses into consideration for the pre-req GPA come February, and right now I have A/A+ average in both. So my pre-req GPA should be up to 3.66. They drop your lowest year if you've completed 4+ years of undergrad, which is why my GPA went up so much. I might actually stand a chance now!

Also, I realized that I don't need psychology anymore...I thought U of A required it, and Minnesota requires it, but apparently U of A doesn't ask for psych, and I've already been rejected from MN, so now I can drop it next semester. I'm stoked, cuz I was going to have to drop either psych or "issues in women's health" in order to fit in my research course, and I thought I'd have to lose the women's health class, which sounds more interesting...but now I can drop psych and keep the health class!👍

And to top it off, U of A is gonna count my environmental chem class this fall in lieu of General Chem II (which I was gonna take early next summer). I don't need to take it for any other Canadian schools, so it's likely that I won't take it, period - unless I get rejected from CDN schools and get into a US one, but I still haven't figured out how to pay for a US school, anyway. So that saves me some time and money!👍

So, some good news for me today!

yay jochi! I've been doing some looking at lab positions and things around here.. trying to find something to do with my lag year..
Hmm, I thought you were working on your master's now? Or is it just a 1-year master's?

I'm working on getting a master's lined up. It's kind of a pain, though...the program I like best is at U of Saskatchewan, and they said they won't require me to finish my BSc, which saves me like 7 courses, so quite a bit of time and money. However, this means I have to move (huge PITA), and the worst part is that I lose my AB residency, but don't gain Sask residency...so my chances of getting in if I apply in my 2nd year of MSc are really low, because I only have the Ontario schools going for me, since they have no residency preference.

The other big downside is that they "suggest" an 85% average for admission (this, however, also guarantees you full financial support). 85% in Canada is the cutoff between A- and an A, so it's a damn high average! Higher than most med schools. I'm not even sure if my grades are good enough, especially since my transcripts are all in GPA, as opposed to percentages. So my 79.5% in physics would convert to a 3.45 average on a percentage/GPA scale, but since my school only posts GPA on the transcript, it means just 3.3...frustrating! I'm not even gonna talk about my US transcripts....my 3.5 GPA is like 90%, technically, since that's the border between B+ and A- on our US scale! I'm hoping I'd get my registrar to send a letter stating the percentages, and that they'd take it into consideration at U Sask when converting my GPA to their percentage system.

Why do I have to be interested in the one MSc program that requires a ridiculous GPA? I know people with 2.8 undergrad GPAs who are doing master's, why do I have to have a 3.85!? LOL, this sucks...👎 🙄

I'm working on it, but I can't finish it next year unless I take no science classes, and I think that's even worse looking...

Oh yeah, and the other program is here in my town, so I wouldn't have to move (big plus) - BUT they "strongly suggest" I finish my BSc, so basically, I'd have to spend another $4000 in tuition and wait until around Jan 1st 2009 to start, at the earliest. Plus their funding is not that great...they only guarantee you $14,000, but tuition is $7000! I'm willing to take on a PT job, but with only $7000 a year, I don't think I would be able to work enough to cover all my other expenses. And I definitely don't wanna take out loans for a master's! So I'd have to apply for external funding, but I missed the 2007 deadline, so I'd have to wait till 2008. I guess it's fine given that I wouldn't be able to start there till 2009, anyway, but then the question beckons "is it even worth to start in January, when you can apply to med again that year and wait till May, because you might get in?" Med schools here don't let you drop out of a master's, so I can't start an MSc and apply the same year. They don't let you defer to finish a master's, either.

But then if I reapply in 2008 and wait till summer 2009 to start the master's, then I have another whole year in between! Granted, I'd be finishing up my BSc for half of that year, but I'd kinda like to start making some $....gah. This sucks!

my friends wanted to see the big tree in rockefeller center
i felt like such a tourist 😛

Just ordered a bunch of MCAT stuff from Amazon... think it's the remainder of everything I don't have (TPR's Biological Sciences Review, Physical Sciences Review, Verbal Workbook, Class Compendium, and EK's VR Review).

Time to get Krackin! 🙂

graduate,

i really don't want to sound mean - take this as constructive - but I think you should have waited until you had physics and orgo done before you took your MCAT originally.

Those topics are really hard to teach yourself. That being said, I think you will find yourself doing MUCH better next time and I have every confidence you will get in next year.

:luck::luck::luck::luck:

Thanks, Meg 🙂 I knew it was a shot in the dark this year anyway... and allowed myself to get too caught up in the pre-med madness to slow down and see things for what they were. I'm proud that I got an interview and feel that - in and of itself - was quite an accomplishment for where I was. I also feel i'll be much better prepared next cycle and it won't be nearly as stressful (April MCAT, early may LOR's, June 1st reciept w/ AMCAS, July/Aug secondaries).

I agree - now that you've been through the process you already know what to do and how to do it. Another bonus, if you used a letter service like Interfolio or university service, you can re-use your LORs. You'll prolly need to add one or two, but that will be easy since you're doing well in your classes.

I'm rooting for you in a big way, and for me, it helps to know where I went wrong and how to remedy it. I think you know that stuff already, but I just wanted to give you a little support.

At this point, it's just your MCAT standing in your way and that you applied to only 4 schools, 3 of which were OOS giving you a little bit of a disadvantage. If you're not opposed to DO, the rumor is there is a DO school that might open in MS or AL b/c those are 2 severely underserved states. There's also GA-PCOM outside atlanta, which isn't a far fetch either from where you live.

I was very impressed with the DO schools I interviewed at and they really do look beyond numbers.

Anyway, looking forward to watching you get early interviews next year 🙂

I didn't use a letter service, however, I advised my letter writers to save the letters in case I needed them again next year, so that shouldnt be too big of a challenge. For now, it's finishing pre-reqs and starting to bust my ass on the mcat.

I updated my mdapps to reflect my reapplication and 2009 cycle. Thanks for the :luck: and well wishes, and I'm so glad you're getting in this time!!

Holy CRAP!!!! I SMOKED the orgo midterm! 100%!😱 I don't know what happened!😱 👍 PARTYYYYYY!:hardy:

Environmental chem is killing me. "Bird course" my @$$....not at my school, that's for sure!

I can't wait for boxing tomorrow...my coach and I are gonna spar again, and I've been rehearsing this right hook all weekend: :meanie:

Muahaha!

Bird course.. LOL.

Thought about doing BioChem next year, and I may (if my favorite prof is teaching it) but otherwise I'm totally done with Physical Chem until medschool.

6 more weeks of Physics and 16 more weeks of Organic! Woohoo!

I don't think there's any physical chem in med school! The biochem thing varies from school to school, it seems. My M2 friend majored in biochem and she said the stuff they covered on biochem in med barely scraped the surface of what she had learned in undergrad. And then you have some other schools that actually make you take biochem as a prerequisite...I have to take it for my top choice, U of A.

Nope, no physical chem for my schools. Woohoo. And BioChem isn't a required at any of my choices, but it is recommended for a couple of them.

Hey Randomites!!

I'm back to the land of the living after a trip to my mom's (the land of no internet access) for turkey day, a rough weekend while there (ran over a dead deer en route, lost something valuable), and then a hellish week at work. I am now ready for some normalcy (not that that's possible during Christmas season! 😱) and non-expensive randomness!

Anyway, glad to read that everyone had a decent holiday (or at least survived, although that was too close for comfort SpicedManna! Yikes! Been that, don't ever want to do it again! Glad you're ok, though.) I need to be reminded not to go MIA for two weeks again, though . . . I had to read for a half-hour straight to catch up! Gradu8 - I'm so sorry to hear your news. It's a tough thing, and I sympathize. But I agree that you will have so much more good info in your head from having taken the classes recently and will surely up that MCAT like crazy the next time around!! :luck:

Oh, and :luck: on the interview, Funky!

K, time for bed now. 😴

Thanks so much 🙂 I started studying yesterday. 4.5 months of craziness to go, third time's a charm!

Does anyone else think that USC should be in the title game over LSU and Ohio State? I do, they have probably been the top team in the nation since their early season losses.

(PS, Im not a USC fan)

USC is overrated. Falling to the 41 point underdog Stanford kept them out.

I think Mizzou got screwed over big time by the Orange Bowl.

I'm an LSU fan so I'm glad to see them going, however, USC has played well this season. I'm on pins and needles waiting to see if new england finally falls tonight.
They got the Steelers and Colts coming up, I think they will lose both of them. Willie Parker is gonna run all over them, and Peyton is gonna get redemption!

I concur. USC has been kind of all over the place this season. They lost to Stanford, who lost to Notre Dame. I am an ND alum, but even I have to admit, losing to ND this season is downright pathetic!!

And yes, poor Mizzou. I felt for them on Saturday. 🙁

Damn. Just realized you can't read my holiday avatar. (Ceci n'est pas une canne de sucre, for those wondering.) Think I'm gonna have to switch it out. Good thing I found a fantastic site with various famous works of art that have been holiday-photoshopped, though! I'm such the art history nerd. 😎

Yes, but that was there only bad game, every team has a bad game, and honestly I think USC was the best two loss team out there. If i was to pick the National title game I would put USC vs LSU though.

Eh. I still disagree, but I haven't followed enough other teams to debate this properly. It could just be that I hate USC's guts too. (never mind the fact that I am currently waiting for love from them in my inbox.)

Righteously disturbing avatar, by the way. 👍
