That's very nice of you! 👍
What is your "average" day like on surg path?
It depends...we have kind of a cycle thing going on here.
Let's take a typical cycle on a "Surgical Bigs" week.
We have morning and afternoon OR specimen runs.
On day 1 - the PA's will tuck in the specimens from the morning runs.
On day 2 - you receive specimens from the afternoon runs. Your main objective on this day is to "tuck" the specimens (i.e., put that **** in formalin and let that f*cker fix overnight). The PA's will submit the cassettes for the stuff they received for you on Day 1.
Day 3 - You have to submit the cassettes for the cases you received on Day 2 by 6 pm which is when the processors are loaded. This is the most stressful day since you have a deadline. Good thing is that your cutting day ends at 6 pm. BUT...we receive the slides from the stuff the PAs cut in on day 2. So we preview from 6 pm to whenever. I don't like to stay later than 9 or 10 pm so if I have to halfass **** to comply with the 80 hour work week, I don't care. Plus, I feel solace in the fact that I'm gonna be a scientist when the day is over rather than a diagnostician.
Day 4 - You sign out the PA cases which you previewed the night before. Then when that's all done, you receive the slides for the cases you cut in on Day 3. You preview that stuff and sign that stuff out the next morning.
This is kinda simplistic but that gives you an impression of how things work.
Anyways, my hours are long. We work hard here. Apparently, I've heard rumors that our residents here violate the 80-hour rule more than the MGH residents (see, here we see all the cases...whereas at MGH, some of the cases go straight to the attendings without resident preview). The PD here is very very VERY displeased with the violations and we are working very hard to remedy things. For instance, we are working on hiring new PAs to lessen the grossing load and hopefully increase weekend support.
