I had the same dream about you. 😉
That wasn't a dream. That was my state when I woke up. The first time my pants were missing. I figured I must have gotten too hot and taken them off then forgotten. Then one day I woke up without a shirt. I know I didn't take that off and forget. 😳

I can honestly say that has never happened to me. I have never lost clothes in the middle of the night that I was wearing when I fell asleep.

I didn't either until like 3 weeks ago. But, it only happened twice. I don't remember having a dream either night. I did have this dream about a month ago about baking a cake and sticking my thumb through the top the egg carton and into an egg. The next day I woke up to find a broken egg in my refrigerator. I wonder if I sleep walk or something now. Or, if I broke the egg before and forgot about it.

I guess it doesn't matter if you can't remember them. 😛

That's pretty much the way I look at it too. Although I have no doubt that I occasionally have a kickass dream that I am missing out on. Like the dream where I kick the crap out of a whiny resident from my clinical medicine experience.

I dream in vivid Technicolor 😉

Speaking of annoying residents... junior resident from the other team was on call last night.

"Are you on call tonight?"

Yup. Do you know what the keycode for the callrooms is?

"Don't bother, you're going to be up all night! Have you taken ward call? Are you good at it? You're going to be doing it in a few months!"

Keep in mind though, that I'm going to be doing pathology. In the US.

"Oh. So you don't have to do call?"

(deadpan) Yeah. No internship year. (Hail Mary!)

"Oh. I desist then. I was just giving you a hard time."

Yes. And so was I.

Just gotta comment on the housing market in Boston...it is INNNN-SAAANE! After today, I will never underestimate the value of location...here's a quick example:

1 bedroom 730 sq ft condo (mid-rise) in Brookline Coolidge Corner district ... $399,000. The condo is pretty good...but damn, you can't beat the location.

2 bedroom 930 sq ft condo in 3 unit renovated house in Jamaica Plain ... $349,000.

😱

Choices choices choices...fun fun fun...

Yeah - and watch the hidden costs on that second one. The renovated houses are potential traps for heating bills, parking, etc.

Yeah, I'm well aware of that. The first property has deeded parking and heating included. The second property doesn't. And I have to rely on street parking for the second...but I think I'll manage since I probably will not use my car much and rely mostly on public transportation to get around.

Well, wish me luck. The deal could go down either tonight or tomorrow morning as a best case scenario. If I can get this property off the market, this place is all mine. MINE I SAY!

Yeah, I have no clue how the heating bills will be in Boston. I do pay $150/month for heating in Ann Arbor though during the coldest winter months...so I am used to getting assraped when it comes down to heating bills.

I just had the preapproval paperwork and fixed rate mortgage calculations emailed to me. If I can close with my current bid of $345K, my monthly costs will be around $2000/month. Life will be tough and the budget will be tight but if I can make it through the first year of residency, I'm golden!

No more living first class, I'm afraid.
No more $50-100 bottles of wine or champagne every week.

Maybe next winter will be mild! Never know around there.

We have a visiting professor here today, from Yale. Talking about blood banking. I just hope that as one of the two designated blood bank residents that that isn't supposed to give me an extra level of "expertise" when dealing with the standard east-coast establishment pimping that we are all expecting.

Ok I have random peripherally related question to pathology. I want to get a part-time job in a lab, any suggestions on how I can go about this with no experience? I mean I am taking my prereqs starting this fall and they say you only need an AS for the MLT position I was going for (but do I have "have" to be certified?). I need a job to work at odd hours (nights and maybe some weekends) but trying to find something is hard. 🙁 You lab geeks have any suggestions 😉

I don't really know, sorry. Med techs generally have a degree in med tech-ing. But I am not sure if someone with a college degree can also get a job. In general though a lot of labs often are looking for people for odd hours though. I am not sure what kinds of jobs are there for someone without previous med tech experience or training though. Especially if you want to get paid. The best things you might hope for are clerical type jobs like data entry or specimen receiving or stuff like that. You may need to be certified to have any kind of job where you are doing lab work related to patient care due to certain regulations. Hospitals are sticklers for such things.

It's the old conundrum: Need experience to get the job, need a job to get experience.

😡 stupid rules 🙁

That is my problem argh. Its a community hospital so I'm hoping maybe I can get something. I'd take clerical, I didn't figure like actual lab work, just maybe doing stupid stuff and get some OTJ trainiing. One of the positions mentions AS and they would only have basic sciences so ... dunno. blah.

Thanks for the info though.

There are lots of odd jobs around hospitals - as I said data entry and collection, dealing with appointments, etc. I would imagine there would be something part time. Problem is how to find it.

exactly, plus I would like to have some sort of medical aspect of things. But getting paid $7.75/hr for like 10 hrs a week isn't going to cut it at a computer lab on campus. I would go back to my old job as a bank teller BUT I can't work the hours they need me and I really would like to have some weekends free. *frustrated*

I have never been a big highlighter person. If I need to, I underline. But in general I don't like to mess up my books or notes with underlining or highlighting. If something is important I can write notes in the margin or something. When you start underlining or highlighting you end up leaving very little unhighlighted. And of course, it doesn't help me remember it so it doesn't work for me.

Is it just me or are we now waying waaaaay more to social security than we have before? I swear my SS tax has never been higher than my income tax before. You know if we put less into Medicare we'd have to pay less Social Security tax too. 😛

When Medicare picks up Rx benefits taxes are going to SUCK even worse. In 10 years all the baby boomers will be screaming entitlement. Stupid pyramid scheme style governmental financial structures. :barf:

I'm still not voting republican.

My apartment is a mess as supported by these facts:
*I need to vacuum
*I need to empty the dishwasher
*I need to do laundry
*I need to file the papers on my desk
*I need to make my bed
*My couch has been savaged, never to recover
*My dog put my face cream somewhere and I can't find it

If it's not perfect, it's a mess. Damn straight!

Yes, taxes are too high. We pay way too much of our income in taxes for what we get out of it. I am not completely adverse to paying this much in taxes if I knew it was going to do any good. But instead it doesn't, it's just monopoly money for the government to play with.

Taxes suck ass. I wrote a check out to IRS for over $1600.

Next year, I expect a fat refund though. 😀

Someone will have to teach me to do my taxes next year. I hear it takes more than an MD degree to fill out the forms.

Filling out taxes is pretty easy...if you have no possessions, no business, no property, no dependents, no itemized deductions, etc. It takes me about 5 minutes each year to fill out my tax form. Basically, I report my income. Then I subtract a bunch of random numbers from that to come up with adjusted gross income. Then I fill in the rest of the boxes with "0", look up how much tax I owe by looking at the stupid table, and write out a check.

Next year's taxes is gonna be more involved. Lots of itemized deductions...I'm gonna milk as much money as I can from the IRS for all the pain and suffering they have inflicted upon me during the last 7 years!

deschutes said:
That was what I was referring to. I don't even know if it will be applicable to me in my first year.

There goes the pager.
It probably won't...unless you buy a condo or house in Minnesota. If things get too dicey, I would also look into having someone fill out the tax forms for you. Apparently, these tax preparers can find all sorts of loopholes for you and save you some money...the downside, you gotta pay these ****ers to do it.

I just need to mention that there are quite a few cute girls playing spring league ultimate frisbee. 😀 I'm gonna miss Ann Arbor Ultimate when I leave in a few months. 🙁

My taxes took about 10 minutes.

I discovered that there is indeed a hot guy at UWSOP. Is it a bad sign that he has a girl's name and bought a ladies scarf at the auction tonight? 😕

I got this really cool mortar and pestle. I will post a picture tomorrow when I am less about to go to bed.

 That is not necessarily a good sign. But not necessarily bad either. Some men just have style. 😎

I am getting a 4 figure refund. 👍

You will eventually be turned to the dark side, my child. My sith master aka some guy I stood next to and said vows turned me quite easily after I saw the many many abuses of the medical system.

My very last 4th year rotation is an ambulance ride out. People call a freaking ambulance for ant bites. ANT BITES! Or they call because they just don't feel good. Well, if you have a working car, you can drive on over to the hospital. Oh you do have several working cars? But you called 911 because you think it will get you in faster? Fricking tax dollar wasting *******es. One old lady called because she likes hot young firemen to show up to her house. Whe we got there she was dressed in only a pink tank top and a very attractive wig. Then she got pissed that the hot firemen left and the EMTs stayed behind (because the EMTs were neither hot nor young)

Plus if you buy a house, now you have to pay property taxes. Even better. More money to be wasted by inefficient bureaucracy. Most people, if they are relatively sane, become republican once they see the size of the deductions taken out of their check. The more you make, the more they take and the less you get back

That indeed sucks. But if taxes were deducted in full from your income when you get your monthly paycheck, you should get a fat refund check in the mail. The bad thing is that you have to wait until after you fill out next year's tax return which means you have to suck it up and deal with it for a year. 👎

As a followup to the my above post...for the mathmatically inclined who want concrete data regarding tax benefits of owning a home or condo:

http://www.bostonareahomesales.com/tax_benefits.html

Then there's this scary little program here which tells you how much you end up really paying with respect to mortgage and interest:
http://www.mortgage-ctr.com/mortgageloan.html

I've been staring at the numbers, doing all sorts of calculations...ultimately I have concluded that renting really does suck donkey balls.

I used to vote republican when I thought democrats were being too preachy and telling me how to live. Now, however, it is the republicans who are being too preachy and telling me how to live. So I have voted for the democrats. Generally though i just vote for whoever isn't in power, because when someone is in power for awhile they begin to waste more and more money no matter what party they are in. I am all about reducing the tax burden and government waste.

Voting for whoever isn't in power just for the sake of doing that is dumb. Look at the issues, geez. 🙄

I don't like the current Republican effort to shove a certain set of ideals and lifestyle down everyone's throats. 🙄 Let my gay friends be gay and quit peddling religion. Did not this party used to be a strong advocate for keeping government out of people's personal lives? (Of course this is only the rallying cry when they are not in power. 🙄 ) And, what is up with massive medicare spending on the horizon? Fix the programs you already have in place and make them viable before adding on new crap. 🙄 Stupid shrub. 🙄
