So I'm watching the news in Boston here and there was a story on "personal concierges." Basically these people run errands for busy people who don't have time to do the errands themselves.

One personal concierge, and she was kinda cute too, said that she found this a "great way to help people."

Now you have all these premeds out there who say that they're going into medicine because they like helping people. I believe these people should become personal concierges instead of applying to medical school.

There are a lot of people in Boston who this appeals to. Everybody thinks they and by extension everything they do is so damn important that they can't waste a minute of their time. It got kind of infuriating at times.

It's also nice if they can cook for you and perhaps drive you to work.

Well, say you make WAY more than they do per hour and you have a family. It makes sense to hire someone to do some things for you under these circumstances. I'd rather work an extra hour at work and get someone else to clean my house for a few hours. It's not laziness. It's just a way to make more time for myself and my family (when I get one).

I think if I made that much money I'd retire.

I just finished watching Kill Bill. It rocked. I can't wait to see the second one.

I also want to see other Quentin Tarantino movies like Pulp Fiction now.

I am really surprised how much I liked it. I gotta get the soundtrack.

I believe families should be self sufficient (aside from childcare). I mean, as far as housekeeping duties--every meneber should do their part to keep the place running. I know there are some exceptions, but in my family, I'd rather see my kids cooking and cleaning then watch them play video games while I hire a maid to clean on the weekends. If I have a few more kids, I should be able to run a farm, no problem. 👍

It's kind of hard to make them kick in when they are really young. There is a difference between daily stuff and routine maintenance. I'm not saying everyone act like slobs. I'm saying if I don't want to run myself ragged cleaning my house and I have the money to hire someone else to help out, I may well choose to. My neighbors had someone come in to help out once a week and they all did plenty of chores.

If I didn't show up to work tomorrow, I think maybe one person would notice.

If I were you, I would not go. But I think you are more dedicated than me. I spend every moment of med school trying to figure out when nobody will notice that I am gone. Then I immediately leave. 🙂

If I don't go, someone will notice. If I do go, no one will care. At this point in my training, I have to err on the side of caution. The reason it doesn't matter if I go in is that our signout sessions tomorrow are cancelled, and I do not have the beeper, and there is no afternoon conference. Basically all I have to do is eat lunch.

Yes. It is always like this.

But as a serious question - I had been under the impression that path residencies were somewhat flexible. Of course you have to be there for signout, conferences, etc., and of course you have to get your work done. But I figured that as long as you got your work done and were meeting your responsibilities nobody would care what you were doing.

What do you do? Are you an M1? I think I had the impression that you were in grad school because you were talking about your basic science type finals. I was going to look through your posts to find out but then I saw you have 10k+.

It is flexible at many times - there are lots of commitments. It depends on what rotation you are on. On some CP rotations there are set meetings/conferences/teaching sessions at certain times of day. On a lot of AP rotations we have signout in the morning but the afternoon is free for us to do our work or whatever else we want to do if we want to put the work off.

Totally. I thought about quitting the MD almost everyday during 3rd year. By the time 4th year (ahem, I mean the last 4 months of med school), I was so apathetic that I no longer cared about that either.
