Random non-pathology and only peripherally related to pathology thread

I encourage you to keep an open mind when you get to 3rd year and do your clinical electives, so that you can recognize how much bull**** there is in surgery and medicine.

Can you elaborate a little on this from a path perspective?

The little creatures that appear when we post are making me want to post even more.
Earlier in the day when I was really feeling sleep-deprived, I read this remark and thought I must be hallucinating. :scared:

And then I hit "Submit".

not yet yaah, i havent shadowed the pathologists yet but i know what you're saying. i'm just keeping an open mind and trying to find something remotely interesting to do research in.
Did you know it's not just lead that causes coarse stippling in red blood cells, it's heavy metals (including arsenic)? 🙂

Don't forget psych with the bull****. I am home at 5, which is a fabulous change from surgery, but spend my day going, "Oh, ok, so you shot up a car full of people. Very interesting. Do you drink? Can you spell world backwards?" 😡

There is much less bull**** in path. Clinical medicine and surgery includes 25% paperwork, 25% sitting on the phone, 25% arguing with people who don't want to give your patients what you want to give them, and 25% patient care, most of which involves people not listening to you.

This place is too quiet tonight.

Yes, you would. I wonder if I can PH myself. 😕

The minimum time i can set is 24 hours. But, I can spring someone early, manually. I'll try holding myself before I go off to a retreat on Friday and see if it can be done.

I have begun to pity the poor lurkers and new visitors to this forum, as they are looking for interesting discussion and advice, and find Michelle Pfieffer in a thread about trends in pathology. Then the Stay Puft marshmallow man shows up in another. And then on another Turd and I are discussing how best to get drunk in Ann Arbor.

So perhaps we should have a thread to discuss random topics so that we can be even sillier.

I'm sure it won't work. I can't help myself, I know. It's not like I could have started a new thread about twinkies, after all.

OW! Darnit I just stubbed my toe! I managed to do that despite being seated at a computer. Consarnit! (this is the stream-of-consciousness, Ode to Tristam Shandy section of the post) I hate when I stub my toe. For it is in the stubbing of the toe (My ode to Hemingway) that I am reminded of a terrible accident with a treadmill when I was 16, back in a dusty, backwater Maine woods town where the people are friendly, yet are all hiding from terrible fears, the fears of the new sinister man with the long nose that moved into the old Fletcher place and is only seen at night when he is seen tempting the local children with offers of twinkies and Nilla wafers (my ode to Steven King).

So my random question tonight has to do with Cheese Curls. Why are they so good? There is this company in Grand Rapids (MI) called Cheese Kurls or something like that and they make FANTASTIC cheese curls. Kind of like Cheetos but even tastier, in a bigger bag, and without the symbol of modern fascism that is that cheetah. Your hands still get all corroded with orange stuff though. That's my only problem with cheese curls.

Other good snack foods: Peanuts (preferably honey roasted), Kudos granola bars, and Pepperidge Farm (Pepperidge Faahm remembahs... ((I think I'm the only person reading this who has any clue what that italicized little bit refers to))) - wow - look at all the parentheses! - cookies, preferably double chocolate milanos.

Bad snack foods: Melba Toast, triscuits, Celery sticks, and coffee-flavored ice cream.

On another interesting note - I had a contest with another chem major in college over who could fit the most Nilla Wafers in their mouth. I won. I think I got 16, but my mouth was dry for about a week.

In case you're wondering, no, I'm not drunk. And I don't do any drugs. I do, however, obviously need a girlfriend. Anyone know if Michelle Pfeiffer is available?

No, that's not it. It's just that we used to chat about more interesting things.

Meeting my girl has changed my life forever, but in a good way. She lets me be myself. We laugh together, share struggles, and look forward to a lifetime of continuing to do the same. We respect each others' space and desires yet realize that we enjoy being together more than being apart. I have never ever felt as relaxed with another person as I do with her. There is no anxiety or worry. Our relationship is based on honesty and mutual respect. And before anyone chimes in with their brilliant jaded viewpoint on how this is not possible or "wait until you're together for a few years," all I can say to that is **** off. I have lived 28 years of my life, I know who I am and what I want, and she is the same way. Of course we are still learning about each other, as well as ourselves, but our priorities, goals, morals, and interests are compatible in just the right way. I wish everyone could experience what I have. This is not the typical infatuation common in celebrities and college students where they have found "their soulmate" without even considering why. It's a connection and understanding on many levels. I am very lucky. Plus she's cute.

I'm just giving you crap. It's what I do. 😛

So, bring something to the table if you don't like the current topics.

I'll take this opportunity to rant that although my class schedule is cush, my roomate was too lazy to get up at 5am to register, so our carpool has to accomodate her ****ing 8:30 am classes twice a week. Mmm hmm. We are back on the 6:45 express bus from Tacoma, which means that I have to get up at 5 or some **** again. And, my earliest class is at 10:30. If we take the 4:45 bus back, we get home at 6:45 or so. I don't WANT to be away from home for 13 goddamn hours just to attend 5 hours of class. I CAN'T WIN. 😡

Back to lurking for me.

Sheer unrelenting pain.
Yesterday I had three marrow sections with immunos to sign out from Friday, and two new cases to work up - on 3 hours of sleep.

Today I got the 2 sections done by 11am and I just found that my only new case got cancelled.

So now maybe I can go teach myself lymphoma.

The real question is why you would have only 3 hours of sleep. Does it pertain to hemepath or does it not? 😉

Teaching yourself lymphoma isn't that bad. You just have to find handy mnemonics. Of course, finding a mnemonic for why 14:18 is associated with Follicular Lymphoma defies any kind of general logic. But perhaps you would agree that visiting FLorida is most fun between the ages of 14 and 18.

Or that kids between the ages of 14 and 18 cause their parents to lose their hair follicles. See yaah, both of our mnemonics work!

This week could be bad. I have to look at surg path biopsy slides, consult slides, and GI biopsy slides. That can amount to a lot of work. Yesterday, the other dude who was on this particular service had over 20 boxes of slides! That's like 240+ (and I'm not talking about board scores!). Now that's sheer, unrelenting pain. But he got through it all so he has real, ultimate power!

Today was easy. Just 3 boxes of surgical biopsy cases (and the third box only had 2 cases/6 slides) and 3 relatively easy, quick consult cases. I had some beers and then came home.

Mostly 😉

Actually I really don't remember any more. Gosh. I know it wasn't laundry. I think I was probably doing my usual weekly life review. Like I said, I think best in the wee hours when there is nothing to bug me. Unfortunately I have to wake up on Monday morning. I've never managed to make that part of things work.

Is it Tuesday already? Residency is going by really fast!

Honestly, it isn't those kinds of associations that I'm concerned about. It's the whole framework. It seems like my knowledge is like 5% marrow cellularity i.e. mostly holes. I don't have a framework in my mind and it's bugging the hell out of me.

Sure, maybe I've heard of "anaplastic large cell lymphoma". But I have no idea what it would look like. Is it a B-cell neoplasm? Or a T-cell neoplasm? Is it an immature neoplasm? Or a mature neoplasm? That kind of thing. And these large cells - large in relation to what?

And as if the morphology wasn't enough to learn, there's the whole slew of cytogenetic/immunophenotypical gobbledygook.
