Did anyone ever have chairs with screws on the back in school? They were the freaking worst with long hair.

I have a pattern. Every 2-4 years (depending on how quickly I get annoyed with it) I chop my hair off to just above my shoulders (sometimes to my chin), hate it, and then grow it back. It gets to mid to low back level and then I hate it again. It's a perpetual cycle. Currently I'm at the short stage. This time I'm not hating it, though that could be because I let my hair get especially long this time. Maybe it'll stay that way this time for a while.

I kind of just hate hair. I wish I could rock the buzzed look, but I think I would look ridiculous.

Coooooooooooolorsssssssss. Love it.

My hair was purple before interview season and now that that's all done I'm considering what direction to go next. Maybe reds...?

I have an appointment booked to get my hair colored, though I honestly have no idea what color I want to do. I've never done anything "unnatural" yet, but I'm tempted to go blue, purple, or some combination of the two.

Is there any concern as to what hair color you should have going into vet school?
I've heard that you want to go back to super conservative once you start seeing clients on rotations, and I would assume that still applies if you're at one of the schools that allows you in rotations the first year? (Thinking of Illinois in particular.)

I have some purple and blue and some bleach, I just need to git r done. I won't be cutting my hair though, at least not yet.

Nice. I don't trust myself to do anything like that without screwing it up, so I always end up at the salon with a reference picture, emphasizing that yes, I actually want that color and won't regret it and yes, I know it takes maintenance. I finally found someone I like (seriously, it took years) and since I'll be moving off to vet school this summer....I'll have to find someone new! D:

My personal experience with those colors is that blue fades very quickly and is a real pain to maintain...but this will also vary depending on the level of chemical processing your hair has already been subjected to. If you're doing it at a salon, I would also recommend confirming that your colorist is comfortable with funky colors: not everyone is and it can potentially show in your results.

I would think a school's tolerance for unnatural hair colors will vary from institution to institution. None of the schools I've been accepted at seem to care, but I would definitely tone that stuff down when I'm front-facing with clients. You may face that as a difficulty in first year rotations, but I would consult the student handbook for professional guidelines or ask an upper year to be sure.

I have my hair professionally done every two months with a semi-permanent dye. My stylist and I usually play with the formula a bit each time, and about four months ago the deep red tones looked purple. I loved it! But then, I went back to a more natural color for interviews. Can't wait to go back to the hint of purple.

I hate it when my long hair gets stuck in the zipper of my jacket. I love having long hair because in the summer I can put it up and keep it off my neck to stay cool, and in the winter I keep it down and it's like a blanket!

Recently BF had to turn his vacuum over for something and he said the beater bars looked like spools of my hair. I felt bad but he thought it was hilarious.

Blue does fade fast. It requires some upkeep. Pinks and purples last better. As for what the school thinks, well - mine didn't care until clinics, and I think it would have honestly been fine then too if not for one or two people being picky about it. But each school can be different.

I've been thinking of doing something like this, but with the reds and oranges underneath a black layer

I definitely think it's dependent on the school. Here's it's no big deal really that I've been made aware of. I have one classmate who frequently swtiches between blue, purple and green, several others have pink/purple streaks on the underneath. I've always wanted to do a bit of purple but with a more deeper brown hair (mine's a meh light brown color), but I don't think my internship next year would be cool with it.

I am a short haired person currently. Have been in between growing it out and keeping it short numerous times in the last year. Even went tiny man/ninja bun for a time end of last semester. About to hit that period again. Decisions decisions.

I'm trying to decide on a color that is professional enough for work but a little bit fun. I'm also going to be off for ~2-6 weeks in a week. So if I need to I can recolor it

For my interview season, I went for dark red highlights. They look muted in a professional lighting situation but pop dramatically in the sunlight.

Are you thinking of staying with natural hair colors or going more extreme?

I actually want something a little extreme I think. When I was in undergrad I did fire engine red highlights, tried some blue, too.

May consider a style/color/hair length that will allow you to "express yourself" and yet "be professional" at the same time. I am going in to get mine done in the next couple of months, (still deciding on colors)--but will only get the ends done. This way, I can pull it up and it will be fine for work, but will look great when I am off work. I have a couple of friends with "convertable" type cuts. If they style it more like a "straight bob", then it looks like there are highlights you can barely see, but fine. Then they can style it "swept up and a little spikey" and you can see all the goregous color underneath. Looking to see if I can find some pictures...I am afraid I may not be describing it very well.

All I can tell y'all is that I have used Manic Panic, Punky Color, Pravana, and SFX. I love SFX the most of all. Some colors are on backorder right now, unfortunately, but I would go with that brand if you want lasting color. Any blue will fade pretty quickly, but even the pinks and purples have faded pretty quickly with the other colors. Virgin rose, which was @nyanko's color of choice for anyone that remembers that, will last a very, very long time on bleached hair.

I'll have to try SFX. I used Manic Panic Purple Haze and it lasted maybe a week and a half.

I have used Pravana and the pigment just dumps out when I use purple colors....I am loving goldwell elumen, but it requires specific shampoo/conditioner.

Manic panic isn't even worth talking about 😛

Deep purple and virgin rose are my go-to colors. Pimpin purple is basically a mix of those two, and cupcake or atomic pink last well too but require a very white blonde base to stand out like you would want.

I don't live that far south 😉 (as I pretend anybody who knows anything about me can't figure out who I am)

I was trying to figure out if it was Alameda East. lol. Just trying to be sneaky.

My teacher used to let me tape the screws, because it would rip my hair UP.

Well this kinda turned into the hair thread. But... My landlady feeds these raccoons and they're fighting outside amongst each other right now. They look so cute and fluffy by sound like complete satanic minions. I'm lowkey scared of them...

Yeah... I really want to tell her to stop. They're attracting coyotes I think. I never saw them until the coons started having babies. One actually came up to me and my dog when we were walking at night 😕 thank gosh my dog growled and that was enough to scare it. There's maybe a pack of 20 out there and they howl all night, in addition to the raccoon shenanigans

You could explain to her the danger she is presenting to the community by encouraging animals that carry potentially deadly parasites to come around people...

Does anyone know of any good articles/research/anything regarding Blue Buffalo and any potential problems with it? I've searched high and low and couldn't find anything but forum chatter. I'm looking for something more reliable than that. Have any of you current vets seen any specific trends linked to the food? I'm still trying to encourage my sister to switch brands and she demands science.

There's not any science yet. Just anecdotal evidence.

Have you seen anything specific? I've heard of the food having unhealthy levels of calcium specifically
There was something about hypervitaminosis D. The other issue is that the amount of protein is higher than most other foods. Many veterinarians report seeing elevated creatinine as a result. I've seen (and others have reported) increase in crystalluria and more basic urine.

Totally anecdotal, so keep in mind that this isn't really something you can take to the bank but one of the clinicians on a small animal GP rotation I had stated that he had noticed a slew of dogs with this nasty diarrhea that was unresponsive to everything and nothing was turning up on testing. Turns out they were on Blue Buffalo. Totally could be confirmation bias but meh. I don't personally know anyone that feeds Blue Buffalo.

I just can't get past the lack of testing, even if there weren't any linked problems. I tried to explain to her that it's probably not the easiest thing to publish your anecdotes regarding pets having issues linked with a very popular pet food brand and you might have to get a lot of vets on board with it. Idk.

If this offers any clarity, on that same rotation we had a couple of cats develop this really weird, really severe anemia that we couldn't find a cause for. Not littermates, but same household since they were kittens. Absolutely no changes in the household except for a change in diet (same brand, different food). Without writing you a novel, just trust me that we worked the case up extremely thoroughly. The cats were hospitalized for a couple weeks, I believe. Ultimately, I ended up calling the food company and asking if they would test the food because we were concerned that it was the cause of whatever was wrong with the cats. They refused to test it and told me that they don't test any open bags of food -- which I can somewhat understand but that meant our only option was to contact the state vet and ask if they could test it. Ultimately, we didn't end up testing it because the owner's mother-in-law (or some kind of relative) admitted to using an estrogen-based cream, even after stating that this scenario wasn't possible, and we assumed she'd been leaving residues on furniture, or petting the cats, and the cats were potentially getting exposed that way. In my brief experience, it seems that pet food companies are pretty unwilling to test their food unless there is some kind of massive issue that warrants a PR response on their part. I'm not sure if anyone has any different experiences on this forum.

and the funding for testing foods and nutrition is typically driven by food companies. I'm not saying there aren't great studies out there, because there are. Just no one would fund it.

Purina did fund a study to look at what they claimed was in their food (Blue Buffalo) and thus brought the lawsuit against them:

Did that brand do feeding trials? It's my understanding that BB doesn't do any sort of feed testing whatsoever. When you compare that to brands like Hill's' and the brand (I can never remember) that actually keeps generations of dogs on their food for life to monitor any potential problems....why would one be okay with BB or any other brand that doesn't do trials?

Yes. Trying not to mention the brand name so people can draw their own conclusions but they do extensive feeding trials on both research animals as well as "normal" animals in an at-home setting. Very well-known and liked brand.

Innnteresting. I almost feel like 'coincidences' such as this should be made more widely known, but then I guess you risk legal ramifications. For all we know, there are a lot of cats that have had the same weird anemia on the same food.

Well see now I want to know what brand you're talking about!
