Not sure if this is a rant or rave yet. got asked to work tomorrow when it's my day off cause the hospital got slammed today (like almost all kennels are full). not really excited about working but an additional $450 is pretty nice. we typically don't get to pick up extra shifts until after our first 6.months or so, so might as well take it.
 
Personal opinions aside, this election aftermath is out of hand. Even just on my Facebook, at least 10 people are pretty much consumed with the need to tear others apart (this is both Trump and Hillary people). Others are announcing they're deleting their FBs because they've gotten hateful messages since the election. Then there's all of the fighting in the streets.

Geez.

Seconded. I've been getting frustrated because tons of people (from both major parties) have been posting about how ignorant the other side is and blah blah blah. The number of condescending posts I've seen where the general sentiment is "I still love you even though you're ignorant!" is ridiculous and insulting to everyone. I mean, if you hate being called ignorant why the heck do you think it's productive to call everyone else ignorant?

Also: if I'm ever told again that I'm just not old enough to understand the "real" world yet I will explode. I hate moralizing and the level of condescension required to make a comment like that is staggering.

With how passionate and polarized people were coming into it, I think protests/riots were somewhat expected in the aftermath.

Hope injuries stay to a minimum and things settle down soon.

Agreed. I certainly don't mind civil debate and discussion, and actually think it is a healthy thing (for the record, the political posts made in this thread on the night of the election were really tame and did all fall into that category, at least in my eyes). It's the condescension, insults, and asinine name-calling that get me, mainly. And, unfortunately, social media just sort of encourages those kinds of posts. I was hoping that maybe it'd calm down a bit since it's been several days since the event... nope. If anything, it's even worse now. From both sides.

And, yeah, that's not even touching upon the real-life altercations and riots that are taking place right now.

I can't say I'm surprised about the protests, but the amount of people coming out of the blue and just being horrible on FB...people I wouldn't have expected to see act like this. I was tempted to ask one person if she had actually slept at all since the election, since I haven't seen a single post of any mutual friend that she hasn't started a fight on. I decided it wasn't worth my joke being taken the wrong way. It looks like she just deleted her FB, though.

I've been unfollowing people just because I do like to cruise my FB feed to pass time (read: procrastinate), but to see the length of time people are spending arguing...
 
Came down to stay with my mom & stepdad for the weekend... first thing outta my stepdads mouth (he's a diehard trump supporter): so who'd you guys vote for?
Me: not trump.
Stepdad: oh you voted for Hillary?
Me: no.
Stepdad: so did you vote?
Me: yeah, just not for either of them.
Stepdad: well, I think we have to choose the lesser of 2 evils blah blah blah
Me: yeah I really don't want to get into politics rn, I came to get away and relax
Stepdad: yeah I get it. I'm just so glad trump won. America is great again
Me: yeah idk about that, he's already appointed a climate change denier to run the EPA.
Stepdad: well you believe in all this global warming nonsense? I think it's just a bunch a bull.

Big time. No "hey how have you been. Sorry your friend just killed herself." He's had Fox News on since we got in. I was raised southern baptist and while I consider myself a Christian, I do not agree w the baptist church on many things. Namely, the judgemental attitude that drives so many churchgoers.

Gosh, that's awful that he didn't even give condolences regarding your friend (I am so, so sorry for your loss, by the way).

At this point, regarding the political talk, I'm trying to not take it too personally. Everyone's emotions are high right now, arguably moreso than in other recent elections. Hopefully things will start dying down in the next few weeks as we approach Thanksgiving.

Yeah same. I think it's just been extremely emotional and stressful for a lot of people, understandably so. In other news, it's National Pizza Day! There's something we can all agree on 🙂
 
I am on a weekend trip - one day (today) spay/neuter, one day wellness - with veterinary students. I brought a few books to give away.

Need suggestions on mechanisms to give them away. It is a bit late to ask students to do case presentations or topic rounds, but ...

Anyone have ideas? I hate to just randomly give them away, but I also don't want it to be totally random subjective like "hey, great job on that procedure" cause that isn't fair to a first yr compared to a third yr.

Vet med trivia? Some speakers give out books/swag during lunch lectures by asking some question that's related to the topic. Definitely a good way to encourage participation and it's fun. I'm not sure if you have any opportunity to get the students in a group for discussion, though.

Ugh. 🙁 I'm really hoping my family won't get into political discussion over Thanksgiving, or at least will keep it civil. Pretty sure my mom and I are the only Democrats in the family, and I would really appreciate not being ganged up on.

Got a haircut today. Neither love nor hate it. It's just blah. What's more disappointing is that it was a $200 blah haircut (cut and color).

My really long hair was becoming unmanageable and had to go, but now my hair is about an inch or two shorter than I'd really like it to be and the ombre effect is still way too subtle (I even went for darker brunette base this time to add more contrast but it's still very lacking).

It will be easier to style now and I can wear it down without feeling like I'm stuck in a Japanese horror film. So that's good. I have a job interview next week so I'm hoping that I feel better about it then.

For two hundred bucks you should politely insist the hairdresser increase the ombre to where you want it for no charge.
 
Question regarding dentistry for the vets out there-

So we learned about teeth recently but I'm confused on something and can't find the answer anywhere. So I know retained canines are common. However I'm confused on the process of tooth eruption in animals. Are they the same as humans where they lose a baby tooth, have an empty space for a bit, and the adult tooth then grows in? Or does the adult tooth start growing in first, before the baby tooth is gone, so they never really have an empty space, and then the baby tooth eventually falls out? Basically I'm asking if the baby tooth should have already fallen out prior to the adult tooth breaking the surface of the gums. Sorry if my phrasing of the question is terrible. :help: It was just super confusing as it was explained.

Just like in humans, typically the adult tooth starts to grow out and it pushes through base support structures. Often they break through behind the single root teeth, pushing them forward and out as they break down the supportive structures, through swelling and just grinding their way through.

I didn't explain that well, but basically, the baby tooth falls out because the adult tooth is coming in. If there is enough break down of support, the baby tooth will fall out before the adult tooth erupts. If there isn't, you will see the adult emerge (normally behind the baby tooth). How far it erupts before knocking out the baby tooth depends on how much it disturbs the attachment if the primary tooth.

Just like in kids, puppies and kitties will sometimes help a tooth along with mechanical manipulation (chewing) to either break down the old attachments or to help the new tooth erupt through a tough chunk of gums.

(I hope that helped. I just want to show you with my hands. "Baby tooth is here with roots here, adult tooth does this and erodes these and that makes things loose here and by the time the adult tooth is somewhere between here and here, typically the baby tooth will fall out and if not it is considered retained." I suppose I could use deciduous and permanent too...)

basically a simple explanation with a picture. It happens faster in dogs and cats. dogs with retained deciduous teeth often have the adult teeth grow alongside them. In some cases, there is a lot to break down. in others, they just need a little help.

I had one last week where the root of the deciduous tooth was 5x the length of the crown. Looked so weird. No wonder that thing didn't fall out on it's own. Took forever to remove. Thank you digital XR for letting me know what I was getting into before I started fighting with it!

I've had some like that, too.

I've also had some where it literally came out in seconds and you have to wonder why it didn't fall out at home

Adult teeth don't really "push out" baby teeth, so I don't like that description at all (it's at best oversimplified, and at worst it's conceptually wrong). It's a combination of osteoclast activity breaking down alveolar bone to create space for the adult tooth to grow into, and resorption of the primary tooth root.

So even though it grossly appears as if the adult tooth is "pushing out" the primary tooth, that really isn't (in normal development) what is happening.

It's kinda a nitpicky thing, but from a conceptual understanding perspective, I think it's worth knowing if you are a vet student. The adult tooth ideally is growing into space that is created ahead of it as it develops - NOT mashing and barging and breaking its way through, which is how the "pushing out" language makes it sound.

In regards to appropriate language ... look. There's a time and a place. Everyone knows what "adult" and "baby" teeth mean. Nothing wrong with simple language like that. This isn't a textbook. When you're taking an exam, talking to a professor, on clinics, writing a surgery report ... sure, use appropriate terminology. Talking to friends? "Baby tooth" is perfectly fine. No need to try and sound smart. Good on you for trying to understand the process better.
 
Not to mention in practice, clients will definitely want those easy to understand terms. I would've never been able to tell you what a deciduous tooth was before vet school.

Duh. It's a tooth that sheds its leaves every year.
 
I mean, seriously, it's kinda funny. You hear students using all this fancy language..... which is great, cause you need to learn it..... and it IS useful for medical records, teaching, etc. But if you're just saying it to sound like you're a smart doctor.... meh.

I assisted a board-certified surgeon in some procedure earlier this year when he needed an extra set of hands. I'm good for that strong-back-weak-mind kinda stuff. We're poking and prodding in the chest, and I asked him something like "what is this thing?"

He just stared at me and said "LIS, I've been doing this 20 years. I have no idea what that's called anymore. I just know what's supposed to be where."

So my cousin really wants a French bulldog and asked me my opinion on them. I don't have an extensive knowledge on the breed and was wondering what opinions other people have.
 
Does anyone know why DO programs are less competitive than MD programs? Not interested in either, but I see a lot of "if you aren't that competitive, try a DO program instead," on the human med sections of the forum.

From what I understand, graduates of both programs can do the same things. Maybe I'm wrong?

I found a really cool website that details the differences between the two. From what I've read, besides for the stigma of MD vs DO, the "if you aren't competitive, pick DO" probably also goes into the fact that DOs are likely to not specialize and just be a physician, unlike most MDs who tend to specialize.
