So my boss is also the professor of one of the required grad school courses. There is a all-day training that's happening next week, and it happens to be on the one day that this class meets. Boss wanted me and one of my lab mates to attend the training because it's relevant to one of my projects. So we've registered for the training, and she obviously knows that we're missing class and why, but she needs us to send her an e-mail as an official "we'll be absent"-type thing.

Because of the circumstances, our e-mail to her was basically "Hello Professor, I'm going to miss class next week for X reason, please let me know if there is any work to make up." Which was all good and fine, until she sent a scolding e-mail back that basically chewed us out for announcing that we were going to miss class and not asking permission first. So, I guess in the future we will need to ask her permission as a professor to do the things she tells us to do as our boss? That's was I got out of today, anyway. 🙄

In person it might have felt more like a good-natured joke, but over e-mail it very much did not.

Although I should say that something changed in my brain after the last clinic I worked at and now this type of thing is more humorous than upsetting. So that's good I guess :laugh:

Have people heard about this mystery illness outbreak in Norwegian dogs?

Sounds like scary stuff; I saw one person (on Reddit maybe?) compare it to the outbreak of parvo in the 1970s.

They've isolated two bacterial agents that are present in high numbers in affected dogs, but to my knowledge, neither of those causes such a rapidly fatal disease. Based on the described clinical signs (pieced together from news articles so idk how accurate the reports are), it almost sounds like an ebola analogue in dogs or something similarly terrible.

Anyway. Might be of interest to anyone who is interested in infectious/emerging diseases.
 
When classes are all done before noon, I loiter around in the building for an extra hour because I don’t trust people not to send out last minute schedule changes.

That didn’t happen today, so I spent my post-exam afternoon at Ikea, watching a bus load of Mennonite women wander around the place.

If you put your index finger on the medial canthus of the eye, and you put your thumb on the lateral canthus of your eye and you squeezed, would your eye squish like a grape?

Ophthalmology studying is clearly going reaaaaally well.

Proptosis is more likely, I would think. Though the two popped kitten eyeballs I have treated both healed up very well.

Do humans get as easily proptosed eyes? I just know that ours is completely encased in bone versus animals that have an orbit that’s open laterally and completed by ligaments and muscle...

I think you are referring to globe luxation in humans.

It's not common in humans.

Most often, seen in trauma cases, although some non-trauma patients present with globe luxation associated with shallow orbits or floppy eyelid syndrome (FES). The eyeball will hang out of the eye, attached to the optic nerve.

My philosophy with eye problems, specifically proptosis (or globe luxuation as it’s called in humans) is very simple:

ophtho horrifies me and I don't like how tiny a bunch of their instruments are

but I could do nasty derm cases all day. Give me your bald, your oozing, your itchy masses yearning to scratch free

Don't even get me started on their suture. I can't even see 8-0 suture without some kind of help. What is it, suture for ants?!

I love derm and allergies so much! Which is probably good, since about 60% of my patients were allergy pets today and it's not even allergy season here anymore.

I shadowed derm a while back and I think I scared them because I came in with so many questions about apoquel and cytopoint and also a staggering level of enthusiasm

Some of these patients do need a little reprogramming! Hopefully its working!

I also use Sapphire if you prefer that :heckyeah:
