rank list help

hey guys...long time viewer, first time poster...

I need some help badly- my pd seems to be a little aloof these days and is not really much help to me in my time of need (he says my rank list is up to me at this point and all the programs are great). i know my rank will mostly be based on my gut feeling, but i plan to do a fellowship and the academic standing and my chance at a fellowship at a certain program have alot to do with my ranking of a program as well.

I was wondering if anybody had the slightest clue on these programs....

Albert Einstein
Boston University
Loyola
Rush
UIC
UIC-metro
Louisville
Fairfax
UT Southwestern
St Luke's
UCLA
North Shore-LIJ
U of Rochester
MUSC
Jefferson
USF-tampa

thank you ssooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😕

Albert Einstein is in NY thats up north. UCLA is in california...somewhere, its warm. U of rochester is in Minn. Its cold. Loyola has a nice cafeteria. USF-tampa is in florida, also warm. Jefferson is named after a former president, I think he's on the ten dollar bill, good looking guy. UIC is the non-metro version of UIC-metro and vice versa. BU is like MGH junior college. Rush is okay. fairfax is slightly better and louisville is spelled much different than it is pronounced, so...heads up on that. UT southwestern is kinda to the south and west. St. Lukes is a holy good place kinda religious. MUSC, nothing wrong with that.

If I was gonna rank them it would be:
1. Rush
2. BU
3. Albert Einstein
4. Loyola
5. UIC
6. UIC-metro
7. MUSC
8. Louisville
9. Fairfax
10 St. Lukes
11.UT Southwestern
12. UCLA
North Shore-LIJ - I wouldn't rank, call rooms smell like cabbage
U of Rochester - Ditto the not ranking. Too cold.
Jefferson - wouldnt rank, don't like the buildings
USF-tampa - Afraid of alligators, my personal problem so you can go ahead and rank it.

Hope this helps, since it seems you have put a lot of thought into it allready and are leaving it up to complete strangers to make a rank list for you (despite the fact that we all have individual preferences and types of people that we get along with). Good luck.

(Yes, I do have a LOT of free time on my hands).

This guy is the same as Motionpicture? (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=368140)

actually yes..there is some identifying info in that post and i was trying to post a little more anonymously (just read a thread about how some PDs look at this site) - it obviously didn't work, but any help would be appreciated... and yes i know its up to me and who i get along with and i know my number 1, but 2,3, 4, etc...are all the same for me for one reason or another...so i was wondering if anyone from a different school had any input from their PD as to their ability to help me gain a fellowship would be somewaht helpful, but definately not the last word on my rank list!!!

The fact is that you can get a good fellowship coming from almost anywhere. While going to BMS for residency might make people look at your application twice, if you don't have good LORs, AbSite scores, etc. it won't make a difference.

What makes a difference is the connections you can make - if you are interested at this point (and bear in mind that many surgical residents do not make up their minds about fellowship until the last minute) say in Peds Surg, does your residency have such a department? Will you get to spend time in a lab (more important for competitive fellowships)? What is their history in matching people into such fellowships?

I went to a low middle tier residency program and no one I know had any trouble matching into fellowships, including Surg Onc, Peds and Plastics. So, its more a matter of many other factors than the "name" or where you did you residency. And PDs will tell you the same. Pick the place you like the best, which has some reasonable educational opportunities and you hear that the faculty are supportive and helpful in assuring you obtain your goals.
