Anybody applying EM get any of these elusive ranked to match emails/letters that seem to be the buzz in the nrmp/eras forum? Just curious if EM sends these out or just the customary letters.

What customary letters? 😕

I contacted my #1 by email and got a positive-but-noncommittal email response. Otherwise, nobody's been courting me in any way.

Got a 'ranked to match' from a DO program when I was interviewing, from what I heard, was a lock. Otherwise, just a few 'love to have you here' emails. Nothing else.

I hear you. I never sent a "#1" email, but I told my top 4 I was ranking them "very highly." Only 2 noncommittal responses.

The only one actively courting me is a brand new program which, unfortunately, is in a less than desirable city for me.

I speak from personal experiences and "ranked to match" does not always work out that way. Just take it with a grain of salt.

Agreed. There are a few different comments that frequently are heard and here is how I would translate two of them:

"You are a guaranteed match"-- we have n spots and you are ranked n or higher. i.e. you are #9 on a program's list that matches 10 residents. You are guaranteed to be there if you rank the program number one.

"You are ranked to match"-- based on how far the program usually goes down on their rank list you should match. i.e. You are #20 on a program's list that has gone down to their 30th ranked applicant the last few years to fill their class. This is the one that is highly variable as there is no way for a program to know for sure how far they'll go down each year. You may be in a position that would have matched las tyear, but this year they don't go down as far so you don't match with them.

Hope that helps.

I've heard that as well. However, on the osteo side, I've heard that when they say it, it means you will match there if you rank them. I don't know what anyone else's understanding is about this, as I withdrew from the osteo match, but it's what I've heard.

At one DO program I interviewed at, they told me to call them after interview season and they would *tell* me exactly where in their rank list I'd be. Didn't call them, but again, this is supposedly they way it works on the DO side. Nice but kinda scary if true.

No one has contacted me! Does that me I suck and should be getting ready to scramble some Eggs?:scared:

In a word, NO. A lot of us just don't play the game. We don't let you influence our list and we don't try to influence yours . . .much . . .😉

Heh. I've gotten a few straight up "we really want you, please consider us" letters from programs. I know that I should just ignore them but it's nice nonetheless.

Of course, I assume that it's merely so much fluff. Right?

Same here, but none had that term ranked to match that it seems every other specialty gets.

Not that I am putting any stock into these emails or letters. It just gives you that warm and tingly feeling that you're wanted.

Evo and medic,

My point was that their attitude towards you probably shouldn't affect yours towards them. You should look upon such letters as an attempt to affect your rank list. They may or may not tell you anything about their match lists.

Study game theory.

They won't affect my list one bit, it just makes you feel a little better when your top choice sends some love you way, whether they mean it or not.

I definitely told my #1 that they were #1, and confessed my undying love for the program to the program director, who gave me no love or hate, but like the typical dating scenario left me wondering a million questions as to whether or not I have a solid shot. Haha. I hate it, don't you? I can't sleep, I can't eat, and March 19th feels like it's 5 years away.

On the contrary, I emailed the PD of my #2 and got no response whatsoever.....so I'll take that as a negative. Still ranking them #2 though.
