Just curious if anyone noticed MSU's Osteo program ranked 7th in the new US News Primary Care rankings. The MD program is ranked 23rd. Pretty cool. Has the DO program been ranked before? Are other DO programs ranked?

*Don't care about rankings, just curious. 🙂

What does that mean?
In reality? nothing.

I just thought it was cool/interesting that US News would rank an Osteo school (and so high! 😀).

I didn't pay attention to previous years rankings to know if this has happened before (perhaps I'm just a few steps behind) and I didn't look through the entire ranking so I wasn't sure if other DO schools were listed.

MSUCOM usually ranks top 10 for primary care. It's very famous here in Michigan. Is it weird for it to be rank so high, not really, it's an awesome program.

Dude just think, if you can convince/bribe your whole class to go into primary care then your school would be ranked #1! 😉

The rankings are useless. They look at 2 things reputation and students. 40% of a research and 40% of a primary care ranking is reputation by both PDs and peers. 20% of a research school rank was based off of faculty research and 10% off of NIH funding. 30% for primary care was the primary care match rate. For research schools MCAT accounts for 13% and 9.75% for primary care. 6% and 4.5% for UGPA at research and primary care respectively. 1% and .75% for acceptance rate at research and primary care. 10% and 15% for ratio of full time professors to medical students. This ranking ignores more important things, like board passage rate, quality of third and fourth year rotations. For a "research school" the NIH isn't the only funding source. Also how does the faculty ratio matter?

And yet Michigan is one of the states that requires a transitional year...go figure

Yeah but Oklahoma as a state still sucks. TEXAS BABY!

Yeah but Oklahoma as a state still sucks. TEXAS BABY!

Give me a break, have you lived there? I have lived in both, they are both fine states. The only thing different about Texas is the huge cities, and I guess those are cool if you like living in the land of endless traffic and 1 hr 10 mile commutes. Everything else about the states is pretty much identical. I will admit that 3.2 beer is one of Oklahoma's downfalls and not every establishment sells shiner bock, which sucks as well.

So in this quote, you gave a +1 for TX (big cities) , -1(traffic) for TX, and -2 for OK (3.2 beer and lack of shiner bock). I don't know about you but I would rather live in a big city with traffic then drive freely next to red dirt. I rest my case.

I was merely trying to say, I have lived in both (actually grew up in Texas), and they both have their drawbacks, but overall, I think they are both great places to live. I could create a laundry list and try to make it even for you…I will spare myself.

I do not even know what this means. Oklahoma State COM is Located in Tulsa on the Arkansas river, not exactly red dirt country. It really is a nice place to live, I don't know what else I can say to convince you of that.

I think it is funny how a thread about MSU's ranking turned into a red neck pissing contest over which state is more miserable Texas or Oklahoma

I think you're taking this too seriously. I'm just saying Oklahoma sucks.

Dude, I can take anything and turn it into a Texas>Oklahoma pissing contest.

There really is NO other state as amazing as TX.

Why?

For me I think the Northwest is the best area. It's beautiful, mild winters, all the outdoor activities you can think of, sports teams to watch, ocean AND mountains. I dunno how you could want more...

I would agree that it is one of the most beautiful areas but sports teams? compared to TX? Really? The whole northwest has to root for seattle seahawks and the portland trailblazers for pro teams. Not to mention that the state of TX is just as big as Washington, Oregon, and Idaho combined! if not bigger. BTW, doesn't it rain all the time there?

Did you notice how Texasphysician said there is no other state as amazing as texas and you come back with not a state but the WHOLE Northwest area? LOL

So that makes 3 or so states that are more amazing than Texas

Everything is bigger in Texas, including the women. You might have amazing football and basketball..... but you people are way too extreme when it comes to religion and politics.

You have no ocean, and no nice mountains like northwest.

I will take my mountains and ocean anyday over your large women. Oh and keep the sports teams, you guys deserve that as a one pro

No ocean except for the Gulf of Mexico

Haha I like how you argue with me. I was simply asking what these TX people liked about it because a lot of people from there really love it.

If you'll notice I said "for me" the northwest is the best, if that's to vague because it's a region (even though it's about the same size as TX) then let me just go ahead and say Seattle is best for me. Also while TX does probably have better sports teams to root for I enjoy anything outdoors (mtn biking, snowboarding, river rafting, wakeboarding etc) and I'm afraid TX really had nothing compared to the Northwest in that regard. So again I will say PERSONALLY I like the Northwest and to each their own.

But I'm still curious what things people love about TX besides their football😉

Long-term, I don't think. I'd want to live anywhere in TX but Austin. Dallas and Houston are basically just big cities, not too different from places like Atlanta, where I live now. They're ok, but nothing special.

On the other hand, there is a lot of great medicine in those cities. The Texas Medical Center in Houston is as impressive as you'll find anywhere in the world.

San Antonio is another huge city, but more laid back. Pretty diverse place, culturally. It has some fun stuff, and also not bad for medicine, but it isn't really my kind of place for long-term.

Realistically, I'm sure I could make a happy life for myself anywhere, but I still haven't been anywhere as cool as Austin. The thing about Austin is that there's something for everyone. It is culturally and politically diverse, and it still retains some of its small-town feel, despite the fact that it has exploded into a huge, fast-paced city.

Hmmm so is it the cities themselves that people enjoy or are there activities and stuff that are somewhat unique to TX?

Because as far as the cities go I love Chicago and it also is a huge medical education hub, but the winters are something out of hell.

Finally a relevant post to this thread

Sorry but we pretty much covered everything relevant to the topic of the thread within the first few posts.

Let me summarize...

US News rankings mean NOTHING and are based on criteria that are not useful (how many students go into primary care from the school). With this being one of their main criteria you should realize that the number of students who go into primary care is not a reflection of the primary care education at that school but more so a reflection of the specialties those individual students wanted to go into. (The same reason why evaluating schools by match lists is unwise.)

Since when does Texas have large women 😕
And who is "you people" that are religious and political extremists? I mean, those people are every where. Not everyone in Texas is uber conservative and religious... have you even heard of Austin???

I think it's the day-to-day living that people in Texas enjoy. Cost of living is very low, and people are always really friendly (freaked me out when I first moved here but I like it now). I've lived in a lot of places, and I really like DFW.... about to try out the medical center area in Houston, which is amazing from what I've seen so far. I liked the TMC and the people enough to choose it over heading back to the northeast.

Ahhhh ok ya the COL is ridiculous in Chicago so that would be a definite plus for TX. I dunno how much I like the heat and humidity though. AZ's heat is another monster but it was insane and I definitely prefer more mild climates.

Well, even the "liberal" cities there are pretty conservative when it comes to certain things. Lets just say, if I were a black or middle-eastern politician, Texas would not be the state I'd want to run in. (Not that the rest of the country would be much better) I remember them joking on Lex and Terry how even the democrat race had the white guy be such a landslide victory it wasn't even fair.

But hey, every state is different. I wouldn't say I'd hate Texas, but I'd probably be pretty indifferent to it. I tend to like northern climates more. I hate snow but I also hate filthy hot.

Who the hell are Lex and Terry?

Dallas has a huge Persian population. One of the largest in the country. Houston has an openly-gay mayor. Not too long before that. They had a black mayor. Ron Kirk, a black man, was mayor of Dallas for like 10 years. San Antonio has a very large hispanic population. I'm not sure that making blanket statements about a population is necessarily the best way to ridicule bigotry.

There is a large conservative element in Texas, but the state has a huge population. There is a lot of diversity, particularly in the big cities. Ann Richards, a very liberal woman, is one of the more popular and charismatic governors of my lifetime there. The truth is, you can never really tell how an election is going to turn out. I have personally voted all over the place.

To actually be on topic, the answer is no. I never noticed any schools on the list because the list isn't worth noticing.

Off topic, TX has a low COL, great sports, and the best looking women in the US.

Current score:
TX - 3
Other states - 0
😀

By the way, our King Ranch is bigger than the state of Rhode Island, and I agree with all the TX people of course. Words cannot describe how Austin is. You really just need to visit, see it for yourself, and look up houses for sale on your flight back home.
