The cats have apparently decided it is totally cool to wake me up at 3:30am.

Normally when this happens I just kick everyone out of the bedroom and they sulk until I get up and feed them 2 hours later. Except on days when Dorian decides to throw things on the floor. I am now down another coffee cup, which he had to actually lift off of the drying rack cup-tabs in order to shove to the edge of the counter and shatter. At 4am. Because I love vacuuming shards of pottery at 4am.

Wet paper towel is awesome to pick up the tiny slivers. Works well on glass, too.

Cats can be a real PITA sometimes. Good thing they are so darn cute.

Mine loves to dig in the litter box at 2 in the morning - for 15 minutes straight. Then takes about an hour break and then goes at it again. D: she's so loud while doing that!

My parents Pyrenees who has a sensitive stomach ate an entire pumpkin pie last night. I was looking forward to a slice today.

Saw 31 pets in 8.5 hrs. So tired right now. The schedule was all messed up today and I'm so annoyed that they didn't fix it before today. Then I get home to 3 piles of vomit from my cats.

Looks like someone won a go to work with me day tomorrow. Just can't figure out which one.

Smell their mouth?

I'm glad your kitty feels better PP. And I'm sorry to hear that yours aren't feeling well dyachei.

Random rant: How do people get famous for "singing" when they can't sing? It's the worst part of every New Year's celebration (I'm a sit at home and watch the televised celebrations kind of person)

I broke up with my bf last night and I feel horrible. 🙁

I'm so sorry PP.

I spent most of my New Years in the ER last night with the bf. Right around when the ball dropped, someone broke a glass table which he was helping clean up. Shard of glass sliced open his fingers. Went to the ER around 12:30, left around 7 AM. I also lost my wallet in this time frame, that had my license, debit card and school ID. Somehow put my cash back in my wristlet...just not the wallet. All is good though. He only needed 6 stitches and at least nothing worse happened.

Just bummed that my sleep cycle is now screwed up again.

ETA: Apparently I need a gov't issued photo ID to get a new school ID card...fml.

Thanks 😳

I feel horrible for it. But I've been pushing it out for a while now. This time I gave myself the reason that I'd be starting the new year fresh and after all I wanted to make it all about myself. I know if I hadn't done it then, I'd probably push it out another few weeks..

But I still feel horrible for him. 🙁

He'll survive. We all do. I commend you for doing what's right for you. <3

Went to take a shower, got cool water. 😡

Our water heater has slowly been going out over the past year. I have talked about it to our landlord numerous times. Week after Thanksgiving he said he would come take a look at it. Never did. Week before Christmas said the same thing.

Now our water isn't even luke warm anymore. Now I'm pissed. He needs to fix this NOW! 😡

I'm tired of calling him, so I'm making the roommate do it. :meanie:

my dog, who is supposed to help me feel more relaxed and less stressed, is causing me more anxiety!! she's such a sweet girl and i've had her for about 2 weeks now, but she is becoming progressively more fear-aggressive towards my brothers, one of which is in elementary school 🙁

i'm just struggling. i dont know what to do or how to help her. i suck at behavior stuff (the 2 weeks of behavior we had year 1 by Dr. and Dr. Hart from UC Davis didn't really teach me anything and I just find behavior frustrating in general). the rescue organization hasnt really had anything useful to say so far. finding a dog trainer in the area is going to be ~$200 for a session. conversely, there is a veterinary behaviorist in the area that charges $410 for a 3 hr appt but according to their answering machine is booked for the next 8-12 weeks (which doesn't work since i'm leaving for school in 2). i havent been able to reach them yet to beg and see if they'd take me in the next 2 weeks. alternatively there is a DACVB in the area whom i know nothing about. I haven't tried getting in touch with her yet. i just feel so lost. i'm torn between trainer and behaviorist, feeling more willing to trust the behaviorist but its 2x as much.

i just want her to be able to live in harmony with my family. the growling, barking, and lunging at people who have done absolutely nothing harmful to her makes me really sad and discouraged. my parents have been great so far, but i just feel really down about the whole thing.

she also has to be able to fly with me in 2 weeks to school. i am very concerned about how she is going to behave on a plane, and that she'll get us kicked off. then what?? she doesnt necessarily growl and get mad at people in public, she's just shy. but what happens when she's confined?? ugh

i really, really like her. i dont think i'm in love with her yet though. she's a great cuddle buddy, she is a fabulous walking partner, she's fine with other dogs, she's happy to sleep in and lay around all day, she loves to play chase and fetch, she's super cute, she's not food aggressive. if she didnt bark and growl at my brothers, she'd be pretty darn close to perfect. but this issue has me feeling so lost and discouraged 🙁 i just want to get her to grenada - she'll do great there in my quiet apartment with my low key school lifestyle.

So tired of sending out applications for assistant professorships and postdoc programs. Hopefully will be done this week and then let the chips fall where they may.

I'm one of those people obsessed with stability, and I don't like having no clue where in the country I'm going to be in six months, what type of job I will have, how much I'll be being paid, etc. Selling yourself gets very tiring, especially in the current economy.

jmo - does your pup have any obedience training to begin with? I found it more helpful for my dog, who is fear aggressive to other dogs, than behavior therapy alone (although using them in conjunction is obviously ideal). Once she had basic commands down, I began working with her around dogs. Eventually, she would sit on command when a dog walked by. She's still be watching them intensely and straining at the leash, but she seemed to take some sort of comfort in it, Ie, I think her thought process was "DOG! I dunno what do do! Dog! Ahh!! Bark! I dunno what to do! I scared! Oh wait...sit? I know sit. Mom says sit. I know what to do now. I can do something"

Oooohhhh good luck WTF!!! Nice to see you around too 🙂

good luck! i'm obsessed with stability too - i can only imagine how difficult this currently feels 🙁

Lucy does know basic obedience commands (thankfully!) so i make her sit, and her "calm" word is settle intermixed with telling her no. i think it definitely helps - i think she definitely runs through the sequence you mentioned when she sees a man.

JMO - I've been there (adopting aggressive dog) and it's really awful. I'm going to give you some tough love because I hope it can prevent you from ending up in a situation like mine.

In my mind you have 3 options:

1. Give the dog back to the rescue, because it's very possible that she will hurt your family or someone else.

2. Implement incredibly strict management i.e. she is never around your brothers or any other people she could be aggressive towards unless leashed and muzzled until further notice. PLUS see a vet behaviorist ASAP and get an idea if this is workable. You need the big guns; the DACVB can recommend a trainer but start with the vet.

3. Euthanasia.

I'm really sorry you are having to deal with this especially when you have done a good thing by adopting.

I hope it subsides and stays away until you can finally get it checked out.

Be sure to do something, though, if it gets bad enough. Okay? There is always a way to get some money, but your health is... well, that's not as easy to get back.

And what someone said before about making a journal of your symptoms... that's not a bad idea. You want to give as clear of a picture of what's going on as you possibly can to the doctor that ends up seeing you. I would want to have have my stuff listed out and be like, "BAM! Here's all the **** that's been going on." So they can't even consider brushing any of it off.

Minor rant: I'm happy to answer questions about my school but if you're going to PM them to me, please don't just send me exactly what you posted in the forum. It's just... I dunno. Why not say something like, hey, I see you go here, I asked some questions on this thread (provide link) but also had these questions? It shows that you took the time to do more than see where I go, copy and paste, then hit send -- especially since I'm taking the time to answer your questions as thoroughly as I can.

Maybe I'm getting crankier the closer I get to graduation. Or I'm getting old enough to not understand how younger people think anymore.

My hamster is probably not going to make it another week 🙁 She was fine until last night, when she didn't get up for the new food I put in her cage and wouldn't take a dried apple slice. I saw her eat some food she stored in her bed but this is the first time she hasn't foraged for the new food. I'm going to give her some broccoli tonight (her favorite treat). If she refuses it I'll make an appt for euthanasia  She is almost 3 years old so she has had a long, good life but it still sucks 👎

👍

this exactly

it sucks... but fear aggression is very tough to deal with especially when it is towards humans..... and it can end badly..... you just rescued this dog - it might be better for you to return the dog to the rescue and find another dog to adopt who does not have these issues.... you already have enough on your plate with vet school

I am at the point right now that if I had the $$ I would go to the ER/Urgent Care, but I don't... going to bed, tomorrow is a new day.

Ugh I know you are flying back to Edinburgh today..... once you are back if this continues this bad - then go see someone prior to your appointment at an urgent care clinic.... it will not cost that much - as it does not cost much at all in Dublin

I agree with the journal!

My boyfriend and I just got into a big fight after I tried bringing up plans for next fall. 🙁 He left our apartment to go spend the night at his parents' place.

So sorry ky. Poor little baby ham. Let me know how she does.

I can't stand everything being unknown anymore. But I have my and my family's health, so I got to be thankful for that. So hopeful 2013 brings some security, even though that will mean the loss of some wonderful things.

I'm sorry your septic tank got in the way of your last day together - 'scuse the pun and the language, but that's ****ty. 😉

NOT sorry that he's your fiance now! Haven't caught up on the boards yet, so lemme congratulate you now! <3<3

thanks for the "tough love" - i think it makes me feel a little better that she really is difficult, its not just me being clueless. for the time being, she is leashed only around people and they aren't allowed to approach within reach (she just stays tied to me basically).

i've contacted both behaviorists in the area - one has referred me to the trainer she uses, the other i am waiting to hear from.

Getting the big "R" e-mail yesterday really, really hurt and now I'm actually very angry. I got rejected without an interview last year too, so I did the supposedly smart thing and did a file review with the Director of Admissions. She was (I thought) very helpful and broke down things I could do thusly: This Will Majorly Improve Your App, This Could Help But It Probably Won't, and Don't Bother. I did all the things in the This Will Majorly Improve Your App category (get food animal experience, have SA vet that I shadowed for a summer write an eLOR, and improved my PS). Most of the stuff in the This Could Help But It Probably Won't category was expensive and time-consuming (retake the GRE, retake some classes), and since I am lacking in both the "time" and "money", I didn't do them. In hindsight, I probably should have retaken the GRE (and I will this year), but I'm already above average as far as scores go, so I don't see how it could have helped that much. 😕

I'm just really confused and hurt and angry. I have another file review on Thursday, but at this point I wonder if it's really going to do me any good. The last one sure didn't. 😡

One of the most frustrating things about applying to veterinary school is that you're not evaluated against a static set of standards -- you're evaluated against everyone else who has applied to that school in that cycle. So an applicant who was waitlisted one year may not get an interview the next.

With that said, rejections suck. A lot. But don't let it discourage you from continuing to improve your application and applying again if this is what you truly want to do.
