Me trying to read ECGs: :boom::dead:

I am officially doomed for my cardio exam on Wednesday...
here are helpful hints from my cardio professor:
Is there a p wave for every QRS complex?
Is there a QRS complex for every p wave?
Is the interval between Rs the same at every 2 beats?
Is the interval between p waves the same?

Wide and bizarre = ventricular escape beat (VPC/PVC)

This helps thanks!🙂 I think the main problem is I can mostly figure out "okay there's a QRS missing" or "yeah that's a VPC," but I have issues figuring out what that signifies or what ddx I should be thinking of due to those issues.
http://www.skillstat.com/tools/ecg-simulator A good resource, although it covered a lot more arrhythmia types than I needed to know haha.
Thanks! 🙂

also happy to help via PM.

I think breaking it down into little chunks can be very very useful

Thank you Dy, I might take you up on that offer if I'm still struggle busing in a day or so 🙂 I think it will help to figure it out during lab tomorrow, and you are completely right, I think I'm trying to know what it is right off the bat when I should try to figure it out systematically and in small chunks. Thanks again for the advice!

Minor rant:

You know, I understand that there are some things about my undergrad that I dislike strongly. But don't complain about a $140 technology fee when the internet can have struggles, but also leave out that we have free campus printing (black and white and color), several free computer labs you can use whenever you want, and leave out that your frustration is because you're a hard core gamer, not because you can't really access the online class components.

You go to a four year state college that totals ten grand a year without any scholarships. That's how much housing cost my ex per school year alone, and his internet wasn't any better than ours down at DU. Keep some perspective, man.

From someone at a very cheap state school, soooo much yes. We actually have a "student concerns" Facebook page here that people just whine about anything and everything on. I get we all have a right to voice concerns, but I just wish people would do their research on things.
Pretty sure the Internet is bad in a lot of residence halls, because we have that problem too.
But our complaints there may be more valid, though. Because our labs aren't open all of the time, campus shuts down completely for weekends at noon on Fridays (like you can't access anything, all offices close, and even the dining hall has limited hours) and not all labs have color printers. That's Louisiana's education budget cuts at work, I'm afraid.

If it is normal sinus - leave the ecg on for the reassuring beeping.

If it is abnormal - turn it off so you don't get anxious watching it.

It's been a bad couple of days at work. Just plain old insanity and management being completely unsympathetic to staff burnout. The doctors were very burnt out and on edge. It wasn't the fun kind of busy but the get-me-out-of-here busy.

To make matters a little worse, the clique of assistants is shutting me out to the point where it's affecting my ability to actually work with them, where they'll be short with me when I ask for help and where they do petty things like fail to respond when I say hello or good morning (WTF is this, Kindergarten?). I haven't changed my behavior at all, but I do try to stay out of all their gossip and I try to keep my personal life separate from work. They all go out for dinner or drinks multiple times a week and they have zero boundaries between their personal lives and professional lives, to the extent where they openly talk about their relationship problems and bowel movements while casually walking around the hospital. Even with all the BS and drama at my old job, where I behaved the same exact way, I never had this issue. I could even get the difficult people to cooperate with me by just being polite and cracking a joke here and there. But not here. I'm honestly more than halfway out the door and feel myself mentally checking out of this place, but I hesitate to leave because it's a pretty good place to work as a doctor, and the owner and medical director have already told me they'd be happy to see me back during or after school. I don't want to burn any bridges. But I also don't relish the thought of a few more months of dealing with this nonsense, with the added bonus of half of them leaving tasks undone even though they've signed off on the checklists and hands-off management that leaves everything up to a bunch of 20-something year old women to resolve among themselves. Oy. :smack:

So, what the heck was the stuff dripping out anyway?

The maintenance guy said "it's just water" and it's like... I have never experienced anal gland water before. But ok, sure, fine!

"They are dumbing down the vet schools these days. Back when I went, you never heard of someone getting accepted to 5 schools, unless they were really smart." ...You know, normal people just say "Congrats!" But thanks for belittling my accomplishments... I hope it makes you feel better. 🙄

You should tell them nearly all of our older professors have told us "I could never have got into vet school these days, everyone is so much more competitive."

I did have a vet from home jokingly say "wow, they'll let anyone in these days," but he made it clear it was a joke.

Or he's got awful CKC heart disease. Or, even better: both!
I have 3 cavaliers, all 7yrs+. I'm super anal about my animals weights, so they are all 4.5-5/9, and 2 of my cav's have newly diagnosed heart disease. I'm now hypersensitive to their exercise tolerance, so yeah, heart disease and obesity exercise intolerance is HIGHLY likely for the aforementioned pup. I hope they take him to a vet ASAP.

This has been one of the crappiest Monday's I've ever had. Let's take a trip through my day shall we? Warning, there may be some TMI stuff in here, but I am just so over today I don't even care anymore.

1) Wake up in the morning with UTI symptoms, which continue throughout the day.
2) Go to class, get call with my (parents') dog's bone biopsy results and oh hey, of course it's osteosarcoma in my poor 6 year old dog
3) Go back to class post-phone call, hold it together pretty well, until during "work time" where we're working on an example problem, the professor comes up to me and asks if I'm okay. Floodgates breached, start sobbing in a class of 16 students + professor, get super embarrassed and given all kinds of permission to leave early, which I do.
4) Get to car, call parents, give them results and next steps. Cry more.
5) Get home, find my dog in a urine-soaked kennel with a urine-soaked pillow and oh yeah, covered in urine. Throw dogs outside, throw pillow in laundry
6) Continue my never ending quest to scoop all the no-longer-hidden piles of dog poo in yard, mid quest have poo bag rip open and get covered in poo
7) BF gets home, tells me his performance review did not go well (not really my problem, but just adding to the stack of today's misery)
8) BF gives my dog a bath (sweet of him), then goes downstairs for the dog towel, where he discovers that there's water leaking up from the carpet. Lo and behold, the sump pump broke again (this just happened in late January) and there's water in the pad under the carpet throughout the basement. Note, this is worse than the January incident, which was contained to the storage room where the sump pump was. This time its all along the hallway and into our bedroom.
9) While he's trying to fix/realign the pipes for the sump pump, I go to switch the laundry (the pee pillow, remember?). Our washing machine is the kind that drains into a giant sink and guess what? The sink clogged and is overflowing and flooding one of the few rooms in the basement not affected by the sump pump flood. Hoo-freaking-ray.
10) We decide to treat ourselves to Noodles, because we've had a horrible effing day. Eat my BBQ Pork Mac n Cheese, start working on a homework assignment I should have done weeks ago, and start hypersalivating. Extreme nausea follows that, and dry heaving over a toilet shortly after.

Today has, to put it mildly, sucked.

Thank you for listening to my rant. I hope your day has been better than mine.

Ah, Kcough. That's more crappy news and crappy situations than should ever be allowed in a single day. I hope your pump gets sorted out, and I'm so sorry about your dog. 🙁

On top of everything else that is stressing me, my mom just got fired from her job of 30 years. She partly supports me financially. We don't know what to do at this point. Everything seems to happen at once anymore. Of course she is devastated and I can't find the words to tell her. She doesn't deserve this.

That is seriously rough. When it rains, it pours, and then stomps you into the mud. Hope things turn around for you.

Thanks guys.

I honestly cannot believe it. As salt in the wound, they fired her through email. She has something lined up as a regional representative for this essential oil company that I think she will really be happy in. She's just defeated right now, which is understandable. I think it will be better for her in the long run because the job was beginning to get entirely too stressful with her being ill, and she was already taking huge pay cuts. She will be fine, it will take some time though. I really wish I could go home right now.

Had a semi truck back over the front of my car this afternoon. Luckily the car is still drivable and I wasn't hurt. But the dude almost drove off because he didn't realize he hit me. I felt a little bad because he will most likely get fired after this as most trucking companies have a zero tolerance policy for accidents.

Depending on the severity of the damage and his previous driving record, it might not do too much to his job as you think. If this is his first offence, it's likely he will get a point or two on his licence and have to take driving classes or go back to training school for a couple weeks.
Trucking companies have zero tolerance for idiocy. My dad's been in the trucking industry for nearly 30 years and has had his own share of accidents. It all depends on your record. And not doing it again.

Every time someone on my facebook feed, the forums I frequent, or in conversation references something they learned from the so-called dog whisperer, Thor kills a penguin.

I heard about that on FB. Not happy. Why even invite those clods? Given the choice between either of them (let alone both) being at a conference and the guy at MVC who loudly pointed out my acne to proclaim his aloe product would cure it, I'd take rude aloe guy every time.

Because they want to cater to the public? Not really sure to be honest. Maybe they are trying to repair the damaged relationship with the vet community

That guy was so pushy! And when I said for the 5th time I didn't want his lotion he got angry and ripped the bag out of my band (that he had previously forced me to hold).

My mom is hospitalized with myocarditis and a possible heart attack 🙁 Not to mention my finals are tomorrow/Friday, and no one was going to tell me about this if my sister didn't think to text me. I'm hoping I'm allowed to delay my exam. She's stable and fairly comfortable now, but if anything changes, I'll be making the drive.

I'm playing accountant at work and my spreadsheet indicates that I am $170 off between the receipts we have on hand and the payment logs sent to us by the company we rented our card readers through. What blows is that the transaction numbers (i.e. the number of receipts we should have) is spot on. That means the error was all me and my spreadsheets. 🙁

That's only a 0.2% error in calculations but it still blows.

If it's any consolation, one time my mom had a heart attack scare (it ended up being a fibromyalgia flare) and I didn't find out until days later. Sometimes in emergencies it's hard to contact people until things settle. Hope she's okay!

That must be terrifying. I'm so sorry this happened. Your mother's in my thoughts.

I'm so sorry, Pinkpuppy. 🙁 I really hope everything turns out all right and that your exams wind up getting delayed so that you can be with her... that's really scary.

My own mom actually went to the hospital last night thinking she was having a heart attack, but it turned out to be gallstones, of all things; she's going in for her surgery tonight. But I totally understand the worry.
