RANT HERE thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Admittedly minor rant.

My iPhone didn't reset the time for DST ending like it's supposed to, and I only just realized it this morning when I arrived for my 8 AM evolution class at 9 and wondered why I was getting weird looks. Which also means that I worked all the wrong shifts yesterday, too... ugh. It's been an automatic change in the past, so what the hey, Apple?

I have the kind of parents who keep important information from you when they don't want to bother you. I understand that they do it out of love, but when you text me and say call when you have a chance, and then blindside me with "oh by the way grandpa passed away this morning" I'm going to wonder what the heck went wrong recently that you didn't tell me about. I mean, I knew his health wasn't amazing, but this was fairly unexpected give the lack of updates on anything recently. sigh 😢

I'm sorry Jmo 🙁

Mine changed automatically. Maybe a glitch. Restart the phone and that should fix it. That really sucks though!

Yeah, I restarted it and played around with the settings a bit and it fixed it. It's just odd, though. Apparently my sisters' phones didn't have the correct time, either.

I'm sorry for your loss and the way you had to find out, jmo. 🙁

My rant of the day: loving the post circulating through Facebook about ticks and how you should spray your dog with vinegar and various essential oils "two to three times a day" if they're outside a lot in order to repel ticks and fleas. Golly gee whiz, spraying my dog with vinegar multiple times a day sounds a lot more convenient than giving an actual flea/tick preventative that's proven to actually f-ing work once a month!

It's not about convenience. It's about not wanting to fund all those vets and their fancy cars and how you can't trust Big Pharma and it's much safer to just make your dog smell like salad dressing. Ticks hate salad dressing.

I'm glad my mom got a new job, but now she's behind on pay checks. We don't have any money for the next week or so... I found out today my rent check bounced. I have never bounced a check before and I was so humiliated. At least my landlady was understanding and I was able to scrounge up the funds. I know it will be over soon because she will get paid eventually but I can't stand having to watch my mom sell her prized possessions just to keep things running. Side rave: I'm going home Friday to see everyone! First time in months!!

Oh, I know, but who in their right mind would look at that and think, "Yes, I think I'll spray my dog with vinegar 3 times a day. That sounds like a super great life hack."

I mean, I'm used to the don't want to fund the vet's fancy car people being the ones who buy the cheapo flea/tick crap meant for 50-100 lb dogs and put it on their cat. Or one I've seen more than once - "we put garlic and lemon juice in his food to keep the fleas and ticks away."

I guess it's just that the mental image of someone spraying their dog down 3 times a day (picture a Great Pyr or Bernese for better effect) is so hilariously ridiculous. Even if it worked, who would actually do it?

Already semi-frustrated with how tomorrow might pan out. Cases were switched on me (I'm now assigned to a different case than I was originally told...not a huge issue, but the reasons for why doesn't make sense to me and it's not something I particularly want to get into publicly) and I'm semi-convinced that this new case (at least based on the history I have so far -- includes medical records and survey by owner) I'm seeing tomorrow should be seeing an entirely different service -- at least for the primary complaint they have.

On and still having back/neck pain.

My family is the exact same way, I can absolutely relate. I'm so sorry to hear about your grandfather.

I can't stand the smell of vinegar and I don't understand how anyone could tolerate it getting rubbed into furniture/carpet. I still see a lot of posts about feeding cloves of raw garlic. The logic is "Well, if you're careful about how much you give per day, 1-2 cloves a day will not cause a toxicity." Okay, well, you can't know that until it's too late. Plus isn't the logic (or lack thereof) behind garlic is that fleas/ticks are less likely to make a meal of an anemic dog? I'm sure that wasn't exactly what these people were going for when they decided to try garlic as a repellent, but a vet told me that's why it does sort of work.

Also, day 4 of this migraine. It sucks that I can't enjoy the beautiful sunshine we had today. I was walking to class with my eyes practically closed.

I've had multiple people decline F/T products because they don't want to "put more poisons" on their pet (in reference to already making the sacrifice to have them vaccinated...) My favorite though was a client just the other day who didn't want any because "[dog] doesn't get fleas or ticks. [dog] stays in our yard all of the time and is always on a leash." "

I don't think migraines are supposed to last that long 😵
Yeah, they can. They usually don't for me, but on rare occasions (especially if they're hormonal...), they'll last that long. I don't see a neurologist for them but I should probably start. Luckily this one stopped today, but someone else came to visit 🙄 Coincidence, I think not!

neurologist told me if I ever had a migraine last past 24 hrs again I should get myself to their clinic and hooked up to their cocktail for migraines. But that was after a 5 day one that was refractive to imitrex

Neurologist might not be a bad idea! I mean even if it is "normal" migraines they do make prescription meds that are supposed to be good for that stuff. Which I found out by having a week-long headache that wasn't a migraine. Heh.

Hormones are the absolute worst sometimes. Yesterday I started crying for absolutely no reason, then got all hysterical because I couldn't figure out why I was crying, and it was my bf's birthday so I felt like I was ruining it. Stupid, stupid hormones.

I was also told that migraines don't last that long, and I've seen a neurologist. Not sure if you are on birth control, but period related migraines while on bc can be a sign you are at increased risk for blood clots. I would definitely talk to a doctor about that.

Every time I get really down or crazy to the point where I think I need professional help, I'm almost relieved to realize it's hormones. I really just want to be spayed some days.

I'm glad you said this, I'm actually seeing my endocrinologist tomorrow! I'll let her know that I'm having more migraines. I'm also on Spironolactone, so I'm not sure if that would play any role. It could be me getting too dehydrated too.

To be honest I've never tried anything past Excedrin. They've only gotten worse in the last year or two and I have a bad habit of just blowing off the pain once it's dulled with Excedrin. 9/10 times Excedrin wipes it out and it doesn't come back for a few weeks. I had a friend that used to just head to the ER when her migraine lasted more than two days and they gave her a shot? Not that I want to clog up an ER or anything, but I'm unfamiliar with what my options are for migraines.

Lol this is a monthly event for a lot of women 😛

you can go to the ER for it. They usually give a cocktail there, too. Usually something like toradol, diph, etc. But my neuro office has their own clinic for it.

I used to be on Spironolactone and get headaches a lot!! Don't think you would call them migraines but it was definitely tension.

Just repeating what my GP told me when I thought I had a migraine for 5 days.

Hopefully that's not what it is, but it's worth mentioning to your doctor just to make sure. I know it never occurred to me to mention my migraines to my obgyn until she specifically asked, which resulted in a cascade of tests and neuro appointments. My age and other factors may play a part in that concern though.

Yup. But I'm giving you info from a neuro. A lot of times GPs don't have the nuanced knowledge specialists have. So, your GP probably doesn't really know. Having had all the tests and following up with the neuro after a 5 day one, I can tell you they most certainly do exist. But we also ruled everything else out

I understand, as I've also been to a neurologist for migraine issues, my point, and likely my gp's point, was that if you think you have a migraine that long, you should probably seek medical attention as it may be a much more serious problem.

I agree with seeing a neuro but saying they don't happen is harmful to patients. It's also flat out wrong. So he really shouldn't be saying that

Time for my paranoia to kick in.

Isn't spironolactone a testosterone inhibitor? We feed it for one of our studies.

Just as an example...the urgent care doctor my mom saw told her she had bronchitis. When she wasn't feeling better, she saw her internist a day or two later, who performed an EKG and promptly sent her to the ER. So not all doctors are going to know/think of all of the possibilities, I guess.

Just for S's and G's, my mom had a left bundle branch block on her EKG. I've never heard of that...does that happen in animals too?

You also have other medical issues that may explain your extended migraines. Try not to be paranoid yet. You have an appointment with a dr, so make sure to mention it. It may be nothing serious, but if extended migraines, or just migraines in general are a regular occurrence for you, it's worth looking into. If they turn out to be regular migraines, or med related, there may be things that can be done to decrease your migraine severity, duration and/or frequency.

It's main use is as a diuretic, but it does block androgen/progesterone as well. I'm on it for the latter because I have PCOS. My dose used to be much higher until I started fainting when I stood up 😕

this is why I was on it too. And I also used to have problems with fainting when my dose went up. This is crazy!

Maybe it involves a medical note to spare me from all exams! I kid 😛 Yeah hopefully I get some info tomorrow. If I end up being referred to a neurologist, it's probably going to have to wait until May but I can deal.

It's also used to treat hypertension, so if you don't actually have that, well.....lol. I actually just had my dose upped again, but I'm doing fine on it. It's just really hard to stay hydrated right now. I have to pee at least once every 1.5-2 hours. It was a rough couple of months right out of high school but I'm so glad I found out about the PCOS then. Nothing like being in high school when you gain ~60 pounds while being decently active and not eating terribly.

Sorry to derail the track this is on (love repro-endocrinology crap!), but just had to mention:

Worked a vaccination clinic this last weekend at a pet store. Food rep showed up halfway through the morning rush and started advising all the owners in line that "vaccines are poison, all you need is good nutrition!", "skip all the vaccines except rabies, and only get that if you legally NEED to. You don't want to get your pet sick!", and "You live in Colorado. We don't have heartworm here. Why are you paying for that rip off test?"
:uhno: :sendoff: :bang:
Sadly, this "natural" pet food is what my new adopted puppy was on when I got him. Really upset that I even gave them the money for a small bag (to transition).

By the way, we have had a few positive HWT, even within this year. True, most moved here from out of state... but that means there is the possibility for any dog here to have it transmitted from one of those dogs.

Ask this person if they offer to pay medical fees if a dog on their diet comes down with a vaccine-preventable disease. Surely they have a scientific basis behind their claims and are confident enough in their statements 😉

Lol, I was going to say - based on the sheer number of HW+ dogs that rescues took from the shelter I worked at to CO, I would say that a LOT of dogs have heartworm up here.

Besides, does he think there are no mosquitoes in Colorado?!?!

Mini Rant - I've been so good about letting my nails grow! I've been trying to not bite them because 1) it's gross, 2) it's unprofessional, and 3) it makes my nails ugly and helpless. Well, I've been studying for my cell biology test next week, and just realized that I've managed to unconsciously bite all my nails off while reading about immunofluorescence. They're gone. And my cuticles will be next. Sigh 🙁

Most of the HW positive dogs we see are in/from rescues from the south or south east. I think we had 1or 2 (3-4 if I count both jobs) Colorado native dogs test positive in the past year, but they all lived with or had major exposure to a Louisiana or Texas or southern born companion. We really do see HW relatively rarely, but the numbers have climbed dramatically since Katrina and since a few new rescues formed alliances with some NM, TX, LA, and GA shelters.

I was stuck in back, so never heard any of these comments first hand, but I was totally prepared to provide her the estimate for a 3 day (death) to 2 week Parvo puppy in the ER estimate and suggest she crunch the numbers on cost savings before she continued her speeches. They let the pet store owner talk to her to decide how much relationship he wanted to save and apparently she dialed way back on the stupidity.

I just wanted to step in and commiserate. I have PCOS too and it sucks. SO MUCH. It can go die in a fire.

I used to run half marathons and marathons. I would go to the doctor and beg for a diagnosis because my weight didn't correlate with diet and exercise for a "typical" person. It took ten years to get it figured out. There are certainly worse things to have, but man, it's frustrating.

Yes, the cardiologist I did an externship with last summer taught me about it and had a case report of a dog with EKGs of it!

I got a diagnosis early in high school but it didn't really do much for my weight and other symptoms. The weight loss struggle is REAL. I'm finally taking a bunch of it off, but it required some really aggressive measures. Absolutely awful, and it gets so little public awareness.

I can lose about 20# if I cut out anything tasty and starve myself. Can't get to a "healthy" weight. Now I'm on the multiple miscarriages = human pincushion train.
I'm convinced there's some hypothyroidism to blame, but can't get a diagnosis.

Something kind of similar happened to my boyfriend, but it was two different urgent care doctors. He had been having some swelling and pain that he thought was a gym/muscle injury... The first doctor he saw agreed with him and told him rest/ice. 2 days later, the pain is suddenly much, much worse and he has a fever, so he goes back. Turns out the swelling was actually an abscess. He got it drained and is on antibiotics, so he's okay now... but the first doctor did not think of that as a possibility without the fever I guess.

Interestingly enough, I have PCOS and I've never struggled with my weight. It makes me wonder if I've been misdiagnosed, because that's one of the conditions with it.
