KSU and TAMU! I thought I had the best chance with KSU due to my GPA, but somehow I got an interview with TAMU so now I don't know anymore. The interview styles are different as well and TAMU is my instate. There are pros and cons to both places but somehow it still continues to be a struggling decision!
That sucks about K-State. 🙁 I'm assuming we were the latter school; we had a lot of people that couldn't make it this past weekend due to weather, so they had to be rescheduled to the January dates. If you could have made it yesterday we definitely could have fit you in! But if you just got your A&M interview invite I understand. I would say go to A&M since it's your in-state, and hopefully someone will end up cancelling for K-State and they'll be able to fit you in.

Which one gave you the advice to reject the interview and tell them why?

If you can only go to one interview, I'd say go to your IS. Most IS application pools will be smaller than OOS pools, so IS probably gives you the best odds. Tuition will probably be cheaper there, too, but I'm not familiar with those schools so I don't know what the difference actually is.

This is a crappy situation to be in. 🙁
TAMU did! I didn't bother asking KSU since they included in their interview invite e-mail to only reschedule in times of emergency. I was thinking instate too, but the average interviewed applicant GPA last year at TAMU was a 3.67, mine was a 3.52 when I applied (3.56 now but not sure if it matters). That's why I was so surprised that I was offered, since the average offered applicant GPA was a 3.77 and a 3.66 sci GPA, my sci GPA is sitting at a 3.36 now. The interview is only 17% of the application, so I'm afraid that even if I ace it, I'll still be beat out by another applicant with better grades. I'd be so upset if I chose to interview with TAMU and got rejected, I know I'll be thinking of KSU the entire time. 576 applied, 207 IS were interviewed, and 126 IS were offered last year as well.

KSU doesn't post a whole ton of their stats or selection process, but average sci GPA for accepted applicants was a 3.4. 1047 OOS applied, 331 OOS were interviewed, and 206 OOS were offered. My GRE is average for quantitative, but above average for both TAMU and KSU in verbal and analytical writing (I got a 5.5 so that may have helped a little?)

I could have definitely made it yesterday! ): But I was scheduled on the 7th instead and I accepted as soon as I found out in November because I did not think I would have any scheduling issues! I found out about TAMU this very morning. TAMU only has one weekend from the 6th to the 7th and I know KSU's weekend was the 7th to the 8th - just my luck that both had to fall on the 7th. I would be fine with moving it to the 8th if possible, but I doubt that KSU would be willing to do that for me...Should I call Mary Sue and explain my situation? I don't think even she would be receptive to rescheduling for the sake of another school interview...

Something I will caution you about is that TAMU only posts averages on their stats page, not ranges or median GPAs. I wouldn't be surprised if those average GPAs were bumped up a bit by a handful of students with 4.0s or super great GPAs (like 3.9+) even though they may not make up the majority of the class and may not necessarily be the "average" applicant. I know several students at TAMU right now who definitely didn't hit the average GPAs you listed.

I am sorry for your situation though, and I hope you resolve it so you can interview at both schools and (hopefully) have your pick of them later down the road. 🙂

That is true, my boyfriend did point that out to me. I was just resolved to the notion that I wouldn't be getting any interviews at all this cycle, so I think I'm just really more upset at myself for being upset that it turned out this way when I shouldn't be? Does that make any sense at all? It honestly seems kind of silly to whine about too - I should probably toughen up and just make a choice already. Thanks though, I hope it'll work out eventually! Everything happens for a reason, right? 😵

I think it's worth a try, we do have another interview weekend January 21st-22nd as well. Both weekends might be completely full, like I said with all the weather issues this past weekend, but Mary Sue was great about moving people around with their travel issues. But maybe winter weather constitutes an "extreme emergency", but another school's interview doesn't. I had forgotten our interview invite emails say that.

I wouldn't consider another school's interview enough of a reason to reschedule. I just wouldn't want to call Mary Sue and irritate her by asking - so should I go ahead and call tomorrow anyway?

The worst she could tell you is no! 🙂

I swear one of my cats thinks it's fun to have me chase her to try to grab her before she swallows whatever non-food thing she has attempted to consume this time, that she will throw up a few hours later and scare the **** out of me if I don't manage to grab it.

I try so hard, but she is insane. Plastic? Delicious. 8"pieces of hay? Lets eat a whole clump all at once so mom can pull it out of our throat so we don't choke.

FFS, she is a **** head, but I love her anyway
Cindy is the exact same way. She is particularly fond of fake plants and the fake grass in easter baskets.

I'm sorry they're both scheduled for the same day, that sucks! I would definitely call Mary Sue and ask if there's any way you can move your Kansas interview. I would not give up interviewing at your IS. Also, don't let the accepted stats for tamu get you down. They tend to be skewed by the plethora of people who get 4.0s. I know of two good friends who had around your GPAs you mentioned you have and they got in last year. Plus they include fall grades which can help if you did well! Just go out there and ace that interview!

It always weirds me out when people have to pay so much for transcripts. None of my main schools charge for them (at least, not for the first 1-2 per day, which is generally all I ever need to send out at once anyway). The ONLY one that charges is a community college through which I took a single class for dual-credit in high school (so now I have to hunt down their convoluted transcript request site and spend $10 every time I need transcripts, just for one dang intro animal science course...I almost wish I didn't have it just for the inconvenience 😛)

I agree! She's super nice.

Guys, I feel like an idiot now. I just called Mary Sue and she moved it for me, no questions asked. Thanks for all the help!!!!! It just took a simple phone call that I needed some convincing and common sense from you all to make. 🙂

That's awesome! I'm glad it worked out and I wish you the best in your interviews. 🙂

P.S. Don't feel bad about not wanting to call - I think everybody feels the same way about making important phone calls!

This is very true. I need to call both illinois and Michigan today and for some reason am really nervous even though it's just to ask about transcripts! Lol

The MSU people are super friendly and helpful!

3rd job loss this year. There went Christmas. I was just starting to find some holiday spirit too.

Dang. I'm sorry Rocky. 🙁
So sorry Rocky!

She didn't really like the job anyways so it's probably best for her to find a better fit, which she is already working on. she has a lot of a awesome references and connections in her line of work so it shouldn't be the end of the day before she finds something else. I just get sick of hopeful and then waking up to bad news, you know?

I know you were able to get your KSU interview moved (yay), but I just wanted to offer a bit of hope for TAMU. I had a sciGPA of less than 3.2 and a cGPA of 3.36 and I made it in and I'm halfway done with third year, so it's not always about grades! I was shocked I made the initial cut and even more so when I got my acceptance packet. Just be natural and do your best in your interview and I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised too! 🙂

Also, congrats on getting multiple interview invites!

Just got home from work and my cat convinced me that she was absolutely starvinggggg and hadn't been fed yet...turns out my SO definitely fed her already. Moral of the story: cats are big fat liars and will gladly eat dinner twice:smack:

Beginning to wonder if Mr. Dubz and I will ever get to live together. The only jobs he's heard anything about in the last few months are in FL. Ugh.

🙁 what does he do for a living?

My husband is still active duty for a few years, when we decided for me to apply again he was supposed to be getting medically discharged. Not anymore! No idea where he'll be.

But I'm 2/5 for rejections so it may end up being a non issue.

Thank you all for being so supportive and wonderful, I really love that this part of SDN is such a friendly community. My boyfriend used to wonder why on earth I would venture on here (he was pre-med) since the pre-med forums seemed really toxic, but now I've managed to convince him that you all don't bite.

Thank you!! That does bring me hope!! I feel that schools won't bother looking (most of the time) unless you have some semblance of a decent GPA, so I was worried about not even making that initial cut. I know GPA isn't everything, but they have to sift through thousands of applications somehow, right? 🙁

Minor rant/venting off steam - I've heard back from 4 of 7 vet schools and, so far, I've received rejections and one withdrawal. This is my first attempt at applying for vet school so I'm obviously pretty disappointed in myself. Everyone I speak to about my dwindling chances just tells me to give up and pick a different career because I'm clearly 'not meant to be a veterinarian'. I'm constantly beating myself up over not being academically 'perfect' or 'standing out' amongst the other candidates. I don't know what to do or how to explain to others that this is a normal part of applying to vet school (I'm trying to convince of myself this as well).
With the holidays coming up I know all of my relatives will ask about my application and reiterate that this might not be my future career....fun times.
The smartest (best grades) people are often not the best clinicians. Can you (really everyone reading this) integrate the big picture and not get stuck in the weeds? It is a VITAL skill in the diagnostic process. You need to have good grades and a good resume to get in and get through but it is not the only thing needed in clinics

Yeah but the thing is none of that actually matters when you're talking about getting into school in the first place. There's not a very good way to actually measure that ability in an applicant, so the adcoms go by what they have, which is unfortunately grades.

Lawd. Really, truly reaching my limit when it comes to tolerating my older sister. I simply asked her if she had ever read a study on the link between PCOS and autism (I have PCOS...she doesn't) and she quite literally blew up on the phone hours after, screaming and the like. I would say it's her hormones, but she's always been like this...

I think she somehow found my question offensive, but I'm not sure how she made that conclusion.

I was approved to adopt from a rescue but am having a really hard time getting a hold of them to set up a time to come visit 🙁

It took them two weeks to respond after sending in my application, so I shouldn't be surprised, but it's been a week since they emailed back with their number saying to call to set up the meeting and they haven't returned my call :/

I know they're probably busy with the holidays, but still a bit frustrating 🙁

What was she trying to insult you and you scienced her? I did the same thing to one of my family members about an inflammatory post they shared about muslims that wasn't true at all, for some reason that meant I was disrespecting my family member. Okkkkkayyy.

So I'm going to South Africa for Christmas (not a rant), but now that I'm packing I realized that because I stress eat during finals/ dead week/ most of the year, I need a new swim suit.

So I have to go find a swim suit, in December... specifically I have to go to the mall 2 days before Christmas. :/

There are usually bathing suits on sale though at some places! I wish I were going back to ZA. I love it so much.

My sister just got broken up with by her long term boyfriend TWO DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS. And instead of being able to go get her, I'm working a 12 at the clinic.

Went out to lunch with my parents at one of those hole in the wall Chinese restaurants that's kind of dirty with tacky decor but has good food. At the end of our meal, I look over at my dad and there is a bug crawling on him. I stared at it for a split second before my mom and I in unison started to say, "It looks like a bed bug." Dad flicked it off his shirt before we finished. I'm still pretty sure it was a bed bug. Now my mom is grossed out. :vomit:

I like many a disgusting insect - mosquitoes, ticks, flies, cockroaches, etc. - but bed bugs are a special kind of disgusting to me... and human lice.

Came home to cat feces and skid marks on the carpet last night. Hoped it was a one-off since the turd was a pretty big one followed by a little soft, pasty stuff. Came home from work this morning to several more spots of diarrhea on the carpet. Cleaned it up, sat down at my computer. An hour or so later, more diarrhea on the bedroom carpet and he's acting kind of dumpy and feels a little warm to the touch. Cat is currently pissed about being locked in the bathroom (to avoid further carpet cleaning). I'm hoping it turns around soon so I don't have to take him in to work this weekend. Also so that while I'm petsitting (30 min away, while I'm on call later this weekend), I don't have to keep him locked up.

You are an alien. It's the only possible answer.

At least you know that he is a terrible person, and now she's not wasting any more time on him!!!

I know, you're right it is completely 100% for the better, but I'm just frustrated that it's gonna make her holidays kinda crappy. He had her drive an hour (the go to the same school, but don't live in the same area when they're on break) under the guise that he wanted to spend the day with her and then he broke up with her and left.

Well, admittedly in my prior post my grades are not perfect. They're good, but not perfect. I did the best I could working full time in the field (sometimes multiple job or swing shift) while getting my BS.
I understand the value of a well balance candidate - I've been told by many well seasoned veterinarians that perfect students don't (always) make great vets for a variety of reasons...but try telling your relatives that. Unfortunately they aren't always sympathetic.
