Is he a practicing DVM or a practicing MD? (Please note: my comments are not intended to be disrespectful, critical or unkind at all because that is not my intention). It sounds as if he might not have much real-life experience with real-time patients?
He is a DVM, but not currently practicing (as far as I'm aware). He does mainly research, on horses. I believe he has actively practiced in the past, I don't think he went straight into research. Your guess is as good as mine 🙂

Still waiting to hear back from Banfield...I was originally told I should hear back as of 2-3 weeks ago. I called for an update Friday, apparently the doctors haven't made a decision yet. I wish the hotline could tell me if I was at least rejected so I could apply for some other stuff, but I could only get a perfectly vague answer. I'm hoping that really does mean I'm in the running and not that the clinics I preferenced are waiting to hear back from their initial offers.

Out of curiosity, what are his thoughts/the reasoning that he has shared with you guys?

I just realized that many of you like this post because I'm pawning off the crummy crushed potato chips onto the hapless human medical students who will eat anything marked "free." So, some of you seem very happy about their misfortune - hahaha!

As for the vet med students, or pre-vet med students, or DVMs ... they only get the BEST of the very best. Naturally. 🙂

But shhhhhh ... don't share this little secret with any of the human medicine folks, okay?

If I was going to med school, I'd basically wanna go wherever Dr. S is lol

OMG! My mother says the same thing and is so frustrating! I have to and need to worry about this! ..... Unless there is some money somewhere that I don't know about???

Don't worry about it. The kickbacks you'll get from the food companies and Big Pharma will allow you to pay off your loans in 6 months AND have a big house, a cottage on the ocean, another one in the mountains, and cars/planes/boats to get between them all.

Just ask our clients. They know we're all rich.

I see you adding unnecessary hospitalization to the treatment plan for the extra monies

If he is a vet and he's being critical ("does not agree with it") I will be critical and unkind to him. He can get his rear end into my ER and sit and watch a cat or dog suffer their way through death when they could have the suffering avoided.

His attitude is inhumane. It's wrong.

(If that's really what he argues.)

Very little drives morale lower in my ER than a client who refuses to euthanize, won't sit with their animal, and makes us watch their animal suffer and die. It's cruel.

This is the worst. An animal being euthanized without their owner does suck, but it not being euthanized at all is just so terrible. I've had a few patients that were just barely alive and the owners elected to take them home. One died in the car on the way home, one died in the car on the way back when the owners turned around because it started crashing, and one ended up being euthanized in the middle of the night when the owner called because she 'caved' so to speak. She also had the nerve to tell us how tired she was because the "damn dog kept her up all night."

One of my favorite clients turned out to "not believe in euthanasia." Her senior dog was one of my favorite patients to see, and it took all I had to keep it together during his last appointment since we all knew he had just a few days left. He was very clearly in a great deal of pain, could barely breathe, etc.

Had a few in clinics that were horrible... dog on three different pressors with BP still in the tank, in multi organ failure, on fentanyl CRI, doing that awful death cry/whine... we had to watch the dog go downhill for days prior. Sat with it all night and it died early the next morning...took everything to get the owner to change the CPR status from do CPR to DNR...

Another one that still haunts me... Dog having blood pouring out both front and back ends, lateral, pale, PCV is in the tank, needs transfusion, diagnosed with GI lymphoma, dog is going downhill fast. I spent all day sitting with him cleaning up his crap and bloody vomit just so he wasn't laying in it. Owner refused anymore treatment/testing/euthanasia and wanted the dog to pass peacefully at home. Home was 3+ hours away, we all knew dog wasn't making it home, we explained that to the owner, she didn't believe us.... dog passed away in the back of the SUV on the way home...owner didn't make it even 30 minutes out of town.

Reminds me a bit of a walk in we had once. Indoor/outdoor cat hadn't been to a vet since it was spayed as a kitten. Came home a few weeks prior with a bite wound to the leg and was now full on septic. Owner only wanted palliative care, but agreed to leave her for fluid therapy. Cat died within an hour, Dr called to let the owner know he had to submit the head for rabies testing. This progressed into a solid week of her "friend" calling daily to tell us how horrible we were because of the rabies test (which thankfully did come back negative). It took a lot of effort not to tell him how horrible his friend was for letting her unvaccinated cat outside and then not seeking vet care until the cat was literally on deaths door, but no please tell us how it's our fault.

In honor of yesterday's discussion in here about everyone liking free food but random cake might/might not be a little sketchy, I present this situation which I just found in the lunch room of my institution. I admit I passed on it since there wasn't an origin on there, but if it had come from a known person or I'd been more desperate I'd have considered it. I did see a student take some.

Me still waiting to hear back about the Banfield SJP, finding out I was given incorrect info about our summer research program that prevented me from applying, and realizing I still have 8 weeks of class left this year: :bang:

I don't know anyone that has heard back yet.
Several people in my class have received offers as have students in other schools. I hope this doesn't end the way it did last year. I don't think I was officially told 'no' until April. There are deadlines approaching for other programs and according to Banfield, the latest I would have heard back was supposed to be last week. I actually called the recruitment center but all I can get out of them is "We will inform you whether you are accepted or rejected."

My classmate was told all the hospitals have made decisions but some are slower in getting back to people. I got a call last week asking if I could work at a different location, but I had to say no since that one was almost 3hrs away.

I was told that for the locations I preferenced, the doctors were out of town and hadn't even made a decision as of Friday. I don't want to keep calling but at this point it's kind of ridiculous

Edit: Called again because I can't resist. Apparently all offers have gone out at this point and there are 60 or so unplaced students on the waitlist. I should have asked if I was on the waitlist, but all I know is that I didn't get any of my preferenced locations 🙁

Are these for michigan locations?

Are these for michigan locations?
Yep, SE Michigan. The woman I spoke with said they are trying to make an offer to a student who they can't get a hold of...maybe I'll get lucky. It would have been my #2 choice.

Edit for clarity: it's my understanding the waitlist is a national one though. I don't think there's 60 people in line for the 4-5 Michigan locations they had this year.

Is that all offers have gone out nationally? Because I still hadn't heard anything back and briefly texted one of the doctors at my old hospital today about something else and he implied they were expecting to see me this summer.

At any rate I'll be staying here for a research project but I'm just curious.

There's an untouched pan of brownies in our classroom right now. But idk if it's free or not.... There's no note or anything. I wish someone else would take the first one though.
If I left them there, they're home-made, and totally free, and totally safe to eat.

Just for chuckles ... :cat: (and I'm making sure I don't use the names of anyone playing in the current WW game to avoid any accusations!):

A police officer sees @SkiOtter driving around in a pick-up truck full of wolf pups. The officer pulls SkiOtter over and says, "You can't drive around with wolf pups in this town! Take them to the zoo immediately." SkiOtter says "Okay" ... and drives away.

The next day, the same officer sees SkiOtter still driving around in the truck full of wolf pups, and now the wolf pups are all wearing sunglasses. Furious, the officer pulls SkiOtter over and yells, "I thought I told you to take these wolf pups to the ZOO yesterday?" SkiOtter replies, "I did ... today I'm taking them to the beach!"

I feel so incredibly alone here. I can't stand it. I feel like I've done what I'm supposed to...I put myself out there, asked people to go out and do fun things, to hang out, but it feels like I'm always the one asking others and no one is asking me. It doesn't feel reciprocated. This was supposed to be a new, exciting stage of my life where I made life-long friends and I just feel. So. Alone.

If it's any consolation, I'm pretty sure there are many people who feel the same way as you. It often takes time and patience to develop new friendships ... quality friendships, and not mere "hello today" acquaintances. I realize it can feel very frustrating and discouraging to put yourself out there and "work on" finding good friends - especially if others are not making a reciprocal effort with you. Seriously, I get it and I understand. Hmmm ... have you checked "meetups" in your area to find other people who share similar interests with you? Join a gym, go hiking on a weekend, camping-out, watching TCM old movies at home. After a while, you'll find yourself getting invitations to hang-out and do fun things. 🙂

I'm sorry flameshock. I know the lonely feeling. I am hoping veterinary school leads to making some life-long friends too but also worry it'll be harder than I realize to make these friends. No matter what - you are not alone. You have a whole bunch of SDN people here for you (seriously, PM me any time!!). Just keep putting good out into the world and it will find you in return. In time, you will find your people.

I joined a gym and it's so nice to have some acquaintances outside of school!
