If I've learned anything over the past 5 years of home ownership (minus this past year) and as we prepare to move into our fourth home, it's that you will never be able to buy the 'dream home' unless you are a millionaire. The rest of us buy a house that works and do what we can to make it more in line with what we want.
Moving is always 100% stressful. You are only here temporarily though, if that helps at all. Even if you stayed in this place for the rest of your school years, it's okay to hate certain things about it. At the end, you pack up and move on in a clean break. As long as the space is reasonably functional for you and it's not a dump, which is harder to find in college towns in my experience.
Seconding all of this, as I currently am sitting amongst boxes, stressed out of my mind, with our closing next week. Moving always hurts and compromise always exists unless you have millions to spend.
There’s been so many emotions with selling and leaving our first home, and leaving our friends and loved ones with this multi-state move. Not to mention the guilt of my partner having to up and move jobs for me.
But, a positive note - I’m also looking at so many things I hated about our first house, and seeing how in the end, none of it mattered as I came to love the space and make it our own. And, while our new home has some compromises too (hello knob and tube wiring and no central air 🫣), I know I’ll be thinking the same way in a few years.
Moving is emotional and the brain fog is intense. I can barely keep a handle on all the things that need to be done, and now there’s tearful goodbyes with friends nearly every day now, which isn’t helping my anxiety or my sadness. I know my spouse and I made the right choice for both of us, but it’s still hard to swallow. I always told myself if I got into the school local to me (across the state border, but still OOS), I’d go there despite the commute. There were several reasons why that wasn’t the right choice, but it doesn’t mean that I’m not sitting here, a twitchy and sad ball of anxiety, cursing myself for choosing to move 1,500 miles.
Moving sucks, but as you’ve said, it’s temporary. I just have to make that into a mantra over the next two weeks 🫠 @_rae_ , you aren’t alone - moving is hard and let yourself feel all the feels. But, I’m so happy you found a place!!
