I hate this ice storm. I've been stuck in my apartment for four days since my street is all icy and the city is horrible at planning. I am fortunate I can work online and don't have to risk my life, but being inside is driving me crazy and I'm missing my horse who is on stall rest.

So fun fact about 2 weeks ago apparently someone showed up to the front office here demanding to know why they didn’t get an interview.But accountability for hitting the gym vs. vet school applications....If you cannot be accountable for a few months during a hugely massively important step in your life....what's that going to look like down the road? Do people really need help being accountable for not throwing hundreds/thousands down the drain on a yearly basis because you forgot to submit a supplemental in time, didn't check the prereqs or minimum GPAs for a certain school and applied anyways, etc? (The answer is apparently yes).
I agree, you have to want to get there, because it's not going to be handed to you. If you can't get it together for vet school admissions, honestly that means either you don't want it badly enough, you aren't ready, or a combo of both. I would have been mortified if I got rejected from a school because I missed a prereq/GPA minimum/deadline, but in the last 2-3 cycles I've seen applicants (across multiple places, not just SDN) talk about how they've tried to petition the school to give them a pass for whatever requirement they couldn't meet, called the office nonstop to complain, showed up at the school, whatever. Applicants practically stalking other applicants, then contacting schools based on the info they've dug up? Honestly I think entitlement and a lack of accountability go hand in hand at that point though and as per usual, I'm bordering on derailing.
TLDR: You don't need to pay $5k for this service

Adjusting your FB algorithm to prioritize APVMA posts is a great place to start. Or don't start, because honestly it's kind of infuriating at times. I post in there anonymously and rarely at that. I think the last time I commented, aside from the advisor discussion, was when someone was praising the new schools coming on because 'we need more seats so people can start getting in finally.'
But yeah...some interesting tidbits you'll pick up on APVMA, but also here and Reddit. I was getting a lot of tidbits during my late first trimester when I couldn't sleep for the life of me and it was early-ish in this years cycle lol. Lots of scrolling.
This stuff happens every year! I was hearing stories about it when I was an undergrad and have heard stories (some firsthand from faculty/employees at schools) almost every year since. Some people are really bold, and when you pair that with entitlement (+/- general cluelessness for what is appropriate or not), this is what happens. I do think certain things should earn a blacklist status for that applicant, but idk how schools approach that.
I forgot who tried to make the GPA spreadsheet for UofI this year (edit: @schooby who I now remember had to delete their data because they started getting harassed over it) but this is exactly why a few of us were saying that they really shouldn't open that door. Data is cool but it will absolutely be abused and misused by certain applicants. People go nuts and will truly harass the schools, harass other applicants, etc. We know SDN users have used what other applicants have chosen to share before.

As someone who completely messed up what different GPAs meant my first time around, I threw away a lot of money toward schools that would have never let me in. But I LEARNED and I reapplied the next year with a whole new set of schools that I actually met the requirements for. Was it embarrassing? Hell yeah it was. Did I learn quickly to not do that again? Absolutely.
That being said, I cannot imagine being someone who calls or shows up to a place that denied them when we all should know that like only 14% of all applicants or something make it into a spot. And that number has been growing smaller for a couple of years now. It really shows entitlement and lack of awareness of how vet school works.
The amount of answers I have given to potential students that is written directly on the website is insane. Like please just take the time to look through the website. Especially before doing any sort of supplemental app. I can tell when you know nothing about the school.

yeah so i made this mistake last year LMAO
but tbh it was just a difference in vmcas gpa calculation (which i fully admit to never being committed enough to look into how that works and why it differed) vs. what i genuinely thought my gpa was based on my undergrad’s transcripts. its my fault and i was lazy about reading the rules/figuring out gpa calculations but it’s chill.
aaand comparison. “but i have a 4.0 and you have a 3.999! it shoulda been me!”
do you know many dms i have gotten since last January where the topic is “no shade but how did you get in with a 3.1 and i was denied with a 3.8???”

i would just start being like “cuz i’m better than u”. but seriously, if they are the type of person to be going out of their way to say that you, i doubt they came off well in their essays and/or interviews.
this is soooo real. my school list was wack my first cycle. i think i have said it before on here but i THOUGHT i knew everything i needed to know about the application process until i actually had to go through it. i am not ashamed of some of the mistakes i have made because it is a lot to navigate and i learned from it! there were some things i feel like i genuinely just had to go through to become a better applicant.
Guess what, that doesn’t even end with getting in to vet school. When I was an intern applying for residencies I printed out my transcript on the communal work printer and my internmate picked it up. Then he said “that was your GPA? I worked too hard in vet school if we ended up in the same internship and that was your GPA.” He said it like a joke but clearly he meant it. And to be fair, he had a 3.8 and I had a 3.2, but we went to different schools (and as an aside, my 3.2 was right at 50th percentile of my class, and at the school I did my residency at there was grade inflation and a 3.2 was bottom 20% of the class there; GPA doesn’t tell the whole story) and I worked during school while he didn’t. He also had a wife who cooked and did household chores during school and I had to do all that myself. So maybe let’s just not compare people unless we’re the people on selection committees.
Yeah I got those as well and my GPAs were spot on average for the time period. People are terrible. I also got it for my Disney internship back in the day, and for my zoo internship. I just assume that these are the people that were top of their game through high school and had rude awakenings once they got to a bigger pond, but haven't adjusted to the real world yet
THIS. they take into account so many aspects of your application. So GPA is a huge deal, but can also be off set by stellar LORs or huge amounts of experience that show case what you are interested in. I definitely didn't have the highest GPA going into vet school, but overall I cannot compare my application to anyone else's because I don't know what they were looking for at the end of the day. Luckily it happened to be me, but someone this year with all my same stats could be overlooked. You never know. And some of the worst people I know as vets had stellar GPAs but zero people skills. A 4.0 doesn't necessarily mean you will be good at the job. It just means you can study for a test.

But hard work puts a foot in the door so luck can have a chance. I see this mostly from people who have high GPAs or an otherwise strong application, but they (likely) neglected their essays and potentially LORs.
This is loser behavior. Everyone who earns a seat deserves the seat. I’m sorry that anyone has thought it appropriate to say that but …… not surprised.

Or didn't do well in their interviews if they get that far...a bad interview can absolutely tank someone to the bottom of the list, or knock them off of it entirely (ie me bombing my IS interview badly lol).
Was not there unfortunately (would’ve loved to see this go down) but I imagine it went something like “we don’t do that please leave.”
I did have one applicant last year that said something so blatantly 'wrong' (like...why would you say that in an interview) and it absolutely changed how we rated them. If you're saying something insane in an interview and are not hesitant to do so, where at the very least you should fake being a normal person, then it's obvious you're a crazy person lol.

Take this with a grain of salt because I heard it second hand while in undergrad from a current vet student, but apparently one year during Ohio State’s vet school interviews, an applicant was trying to debate the necessity of VACCINES with the interview panel. If that was true, man, what a WASTE of time and of an interview spot.

Without breaking any confidentiality let’s just say we had someone say that the biggest problem facing our field was that it’s mostly comprised of *women* and doubled down on why that’s an issue
someone from my undergrad told me something similar. said that it's wrong that vet med has this many women, how it's terrible for the profession, and was convinced he'd get accepted everywhere because he was man.
He was rejected from everywhere he applied..
As an interview panelist every year... Yeah I'm not surprised

I don’t know if you’ve heard of her, but apparently Dr. Ana Grum was one of the interviewers for that…special…applicant. I met her once before she retired and she’s a super sweet lady. The vet student said she’d never seen Dr. Grum so angry before. Not in disbelief or irritated, but full on STEAMING.

I interviewed a resident for an externship and one of the questions was about collaboration and we asked them to tell us about a time they faced a problem and how they collaborated with others to reach a solution…and their answer was how driven they were to always find the answer themselves and how they won’t give up until they figure out the answer. Like, this is the question we’re asking to see if you’re a team player and how you work in a group, and you could have given ANY example…saying you ignore the team to do it yourself is absolutely not what we want to hear. Especially when you’re a resident-not-even-boarded career baby.

I interviewed someone who didn't go quite that far but did answer a question about what he thought made him stand out as an applicant by saying he was an underrepresented minority in the field because he was a man...it was so hard not to laugh

I had the lowest stats out of my class when it came to hours of experience and an average GPA, and for a second I wondered what made them pick me, but then I remembered that my LORs made me cry because of how incredible they were (it also probably helped that my experiences were super diverse). So many applicants focus too much on GPA and not enough on everything else (LORs, diverse experiences, essays, etc).
you can always talk to me about it!! i was big into gender studies in undergrad and wrote a paper or two about the field of veterinary medicine. we are one out of just a handful of professions that has undergone a complete demographic flip. it's funny because despite this we are not seeing things shift proportionately when it comes to practice ownership, management, etc. the other professions that come to mind are teachers and secretaries-- funny how you see respect for the profession deteriorate when it becomes "pink".
but!! this flip is also a big part of why i know that we can be doing better to be more diverse. we flipped demographics once-- we can do it again and we can uplift more people of color into this field because as it stands, they are very underrepresented.
No, I agree. The price tag is ridiculous. However, supply and demand? If she can charge it and people pay it, I can't fault her. I also can't fault those who use the service, even though I would never pay for it myself nor recommend it to someone in good faith.
As for the laundry service , I guess I meant more "I have this fancy cashmere sweater, I need to hand wash it or get it dry cleaned it." There are plenty of resources out there that show you how to hand wash cashmere, but many people opt for the convenience of a professional launderer. Similar with paying for a meal prep service vs. doing it yourself with a little research.
I also agree that it is probably true that those folks aren't ready for vet school, but that doesn't keep them from being admitted.

HELLO I WANT TO READ YOUR ESSAYS. The way this speaks to my soul!!!!! Heavy on the “no shifts when it comes to management.” Worked at a badass org that was all female leadership and one male CEO. He was fired and replaced by an outside man. Who was replaced by another outside man. No official CEO search, just a misogynist board who didn’t think one of the many incredible women there who kept that place afloat could run the show.

I’m moreso talking about the people who say they have a 3.2 cGPA and ask what their chances as OOS at NCSU are when their minimum is a 3.4. Or asking if they’ll still be considered because they have a great app aside from grades. Not necessarily calculating their GPA wrong or anything, just straight up not even reading the requirements or asking if the school will let them slide.
Who do I need to get into a fight with now??? Because you know I’ll do it
