Sunnex, that sucks. I think you should try to get her a good cardiac evaluation (a murmur in a cat can be totally insignificant or bad news, no way to tell on auscultation) before making a decision. You work at a referral practice, right?
Once you have all your information you can make the best decision. On the one hand, if you know you want to take her, don't let a couple months off-timing dissuade you - that can be worked around with foster, or boarding her at the place she is now, or trying to talk with your mom. On the other hand, you aren't doing anything wrong if you decide not to take a cat with a known health problem (if it is in fact a problem). The earlier statement of "no big deal" isn't completely true - if it is a serious problem you could be looking at daily meds and specialists and while it's one thing to go through with that on an existing pet, it's another to get a pet KNOWING that will be what you have to do. I promise you could fall in love with a shelter kitty too if you want to start fresh.
thanks bunnity i agree wholeheartedly with everything you've said.
i'm hoping the practice will pay for a cardiac evaluation before and if i take her (i would kind of expect them to do so, since she is currently "owned" by the hospital).
my previous pet, a cavalier king charles, had a grade III/VI murmur/suffered from MVD so i do know somewhat about what it entails to have a pet with a cardiac condition (initial echo + rechecks every 6 months, meds, etc). he didn't need to be on enalapril and actually passed away from brain disease but i have done some research on it.
i just feel bad declining adopting her because of her condition (if it ends up being a serious one). i didn't officially commit to anything, i had just expressed interest in adopting her and bringing her with me to vet school in the fall when she is done with her year of "service". just a frustrating situation to be in.
ETA: i know for a fact i'll be able to find a cat from a shelter (i have a good relationship with one in my area). it's just that i have completely fallen head over heels in love and smitten with this kitty 🙁
