GradPLUS loan woes 🙁

basically, found out i have a medical bill of $247 in collections -- it's from a few ER visits i had in 2008, after i got bitten by a stray kitten at work and had to get post exposure rabies (wasn't able to get rabies vaccines elsewhere due to a shortage) - basically, my work place agreed to pay of my bill of a few thousand dollars, i gave them all the medical bills, etc. but i guess there was some mistake because now i have some $$ in collection -- this $247 is the only thing holding me back from getting approved for GradPLUS loans. Called collectors yesterday, they won't give me an agreement in writing before hand stating that if i pay off my account, it'll be stated as "paid in full" on my credit report. frustrating. debating do i just pay them, and take their word that they'll send me proof of payment and a letter stating that my credit report will be updated as paid in full? arghhhhhhh

also having a hard time finding a place that will draw rabies titers without a physical exam before hand. just need the freaking titers done.

So my dad wants me become a doctor, (a specialized doctor or physician) because they make a lot more money (a quarter of a million) but I want to become a veterinarian. Ever since I was a little kid I've been fascinated with animals and understand the need of veterinarians in today's society to help promote the wellbeing of many animals in today's society. I mean veterinarians make pretty good money, according to this anonymous site the average veterinarian in my state, Florida, make $103,250. I think that's good money especially in today's economy. Has anyone been in the same stage as I am with a parent who wants you to become a doctor and not a veterinarian? I told my dad that I have a passion for animals and I've done a lot of research about being a doctor and veterinarian and I found out I want to become a veterinarian. What should I do to persuade him that this is something I really want idc about being rich I rather make good money do something I like to do for the rest of my life rather than being rich doing something I did just because of my dad. If I became a doctor, what would motivate me to do well in school? Nothing but if I worked to become a veterinarian, I have something I'm glad to study hard for.

You are still young and therefore probably tend to care a little more about your parents influences. Unfortunately, there is probably not much you can do to convince him if he is that set on it, but don't let that deter you from still going for it! If you KNOW that's what you want (and hats off to you for knowing so young), then that's what you need to do. I know it is hard to understand now, but as you get older you realize that you have to do what makes you happy, and not allow your parents to influence your career choice in a negative way. Parents are just parents sometimes and it is their backasswards way of trying to make sure that we are successful. So my answer (and you will probably get several different ones), do what makes you happy, and your parents will be proud of you for following your passion. In the end, they just want you to be happy and sometimes they think money=happiness. You better run fast, fast, fast if you plan on being well-off your first 10-20 years .

And yes, that salary is decent, but remember you will have anywhere from $100K-300K to pay back.... I think the average is around $1,500 - $2,000 a month in loan repayment. That cuts your income down quite substantially!

Don't worry about persuading your dad. It's the same prerequisites anyhow for the most part. Just go to college and do well in the classes, get experience with animals and then when you're ready to apply, apply to vet school if that's what you want to do.

It might seem like right now that your dad's opinion is really important, but well, it's pretty likely that he will support your decision despite perhaps disagreeing with it. Most parents do in the end (yes I know there are exceptions...but we can't live our lives afraid of that, can we?).

Nope! People decide at all times they want to become a veterinarian. It is completely possible to decide you want to be a vet at the beginning of your junior year and get accepted to start immediately post-undergrad. Takes a lot of time & organization to get it all done, but definitely doable.

Despite going to vet school in the fall, I completely agree with your Dad. I tried really hard to like human medicine because it pays so much better. But I didn't. Ill humans freak me out and I would much rather deal with a puking puppy than a puking old man any day. Vet med has the worst debt: income ratio of any profession. But I finally decided that I don't need fancy things to enjoy life and having a job that I'm passionate about should make up for the low salary.

I would just go about your business and prove to him (and yourself) that you're dedicated. Maybe appease him by doing some hospital volunteering and seeing if you might actually like human med. But get great grades, enjoy finding animal experiences, and shadow with some cool vets. Enjoy undergrad 😎

As long as that's because he's worried about your financial stability, rather than your ability to fund his retirement, he'll prob come around as soon as he sees that you truly know what you're getting yourself into and that going into a profession you're passionate about will bring you more happiness than money.

My parents worry all the time about my sister and my futures because of the fields we both decided to go into. They wish they didn't have to worry. But that doesn't mean they aren't über proud and happy for us.

Yeah I know it's a lot of money that's why I hope I either get into UF, the only veterinary school in my state which means less money to pay or if I don't get admissions to a US vet school, I might go to UVAS which would be only 700-1400 US dollars a year but considering it's in Pakistan makes it my last choice.

Great. Now i'm a little worried about this as well. I went to an urgent care back in like March or April because I sprained my foot and don't have a GP since I'm switching insurance plans soon. Well, I just got a 2nd bill today stating I still owe like $17 to the hospital for my radiographs or whatever. Since I'm under my mom's insurance, she said she'd call and figure out what it wasn't covered or whatever. I figured she had. Just got another bill for like $170 for something else related to the visit that is due the 17th. She's currently in Florida and said she'd take care of it when she gets back. If all of this is messing with my credit report I'm going to be soooo pissed because I started making timely payments on my undergrad loans until I couldn't keep up with them and haven't been late for a credit card bill payment yet. If you want to mess around with your credit score fine, but I don't want my dragged into it. If you don't have time to figure it out, let me know what I need to do and I'll do it myself. I just figured I couldn't really do anything since I'm not the head person on the insurance plan.

Update on cases:
The drain I had to replace? She had specifically noted that it was ONLY to see her. Well, I found out that it was to ensure I didn't "steal" it from her. I don't see other people's rechecks unless I absolutely have to. She also didn't just staple and glue. She sutured, stapled, then glued. And she did place the drain directly in part of the original wound. No wonder they had issues. The good news? I called today and the pet is doing much better.

The first time, I was 21. The second time, I was 27. (I went through a phase of disillusionment between the two.) So long as you're willing to find ways to make it work, there's no age requirement.

If you want to practice in the USA after you graduate from vet school, you would have to take an (expensive and difficult) alternate path to qualify to sit for the national veterinary boards if you went to a non-AVMA accredited school like UVAS. There ARE overseas schools that are accredited, but they certainly wouldn't solve your money issue as most are more expensive than the ones in the States.

I would urge you to be careful with throwing that number around. That sounds like a decent estimate for a practice owner in the state of Florida, but not for an associate veterinarian. I'm in Florida (been here my whole life) and I've heard the 103K statistic... but definitely not for a starting vet. 60K would be a nice place to start right out of school, and large animal vets usually start a little lower than SA. I'd highly recommend looking up lots of ramen noodle recipes, because the faster you pay off student loans the sooner you'll be able to realistically look for a salary like the one you mentioned.

While you certainly don't need to dig yourself into more debt than necessary, you shouldn't make your decision of being a vet based off of the salary alone. A doctor and a vet can both live comfortably, drive nice cars, and eat filet mignon (occasionally )... the only difference is the doctor's car might be a bit newer and the house a bit bigger.

Getting transcripts from a school where I only took summer classes--especially an unofficial copy so that I can copy all of my classes all over again for VMCAS--is incredibly annoying and difficult. And made more so by the fact that I'm in a different country when I'm trying to do this. 😡 Why can't the fact that these classes are on my primary school transcript be enough? Oh, and it's costing money too. Can't forget that. 😡

I posted in this thread earlier about one of the DVM's who works in my clinic (the jerk!). WELL, I feel I should add that the clinic itself is an exceedingly stressful environment to work in. It's the biggest and oldest emergency clinic in my city, and they mean business. There are 7 (soon to be 8) doctors, and lord knows how many techs.

IT IS SO. FRIGGIN. STRESSFUL. People are always getting yelled at, especially by the older doctors. It's really intimidating. The only time I really enjoy going into work is when the doctor I shadow is working (or when the older doctors are off and it's just the 2-3 younger DVM's there).

The state of things is definitely putting a damper on my experience. I work in constant fear. I second guess myself. I pass off surgery duties (mostly stuff related to monitoring the animals while it is under anesthesia and watching the machines/oxygen) to other techs because I am often too scared to ask the questions that I need answered.

I realize that this is general not the case in most clinics, particularly non-emergency ones. My experience has also helped me to achieve the realization that I WILL NOT work in an environment such as this one when I become a vet.



Whew. Just wanted to get that off my chest. One of our techs was recently let go and I was selected to cover most of her shifts for this month. Unfortunately, she worked primarily on Wednesdays, which is when THE WORST arsehole in the clinic is scheduled to run the after-hours "convenience care" - alone - and the "swing shift" (the one I'm about to go to this evening) is his main assistant. FML.

Got my arm mauled by a tom cat yesterday. I have several puncture wounds and a lovely slit across my wrist. I'm on antibiotics and didn't require stitches but I'm in a lot of pain. Feels more like I broke my arm than a few puncture wounds.

I dislike cats today, or at least that particular cat.

My rant: although my week o'adventure went well and I am FINALLY home, I managed to burn my arm pretty badly while making sweet potato fries last Thursday. Now the burn is infected. Like I might actually have to go to a doctor this week. And it's oozy and it hurts like hell. Not as bad as my last cat bite - I feel your pain Labrat! My last one was REALLY bad, it looked like they had just filmed a scene from Dexter in our treatment area after that kitty got done with my wrist!

So I know this should be a rave, but I am leaving for NYC tomorrow, and I HATE leaving my dogs behind! As some of you know, my female is on insanely expensive medicine, and I just worry that she gets it in her everyday. Luckily, my BF's uncle said he would come stay with them at our house for 4 days, but I still can't help but worry about her getting her important medicine. He has watched them before and he is by far the person I feel most comfortable with, but it still just makes me worry. If it weren't for the medicine, I wouldn't be worried, but I obviously just am 🙁.

It was the first one. She told me the second one is usually the worst for most people I guess. I just want to feel better for NYC this weekend! 😎 I chugged some water and took an 800mg-er so it's starting to feel a little better. 👍

I just got laid off from the vet assistant position after working for only a month. I feel more like I was fired. Every day at work, I would go in ready to do anything .. literally breaking a sweat cleaning cages, taking out trash.. etc. I was the first one to become familiar with the computer system and jump in and interact with clients when needed... yet apparently I "have not caught on" .. along with the hospital just isn't busy enough.

It's just upsetting when I go in everyday and work very hard. I don't work hard to impress others. I don't see why I have to "show that I work hard."

I have to admit, my pride is hurt. I was going to quit but decided against it. The hospital was NOT professional at all and I would get yelled at almost every day for "not looking like I was busy." .. I just wish I had quit rather than sucking it up ...

That sounds just like the hospital I used to work at. Sorry you got laid off. Time to get back out there and look for something even better 😀.

My rant: like I wasn't worried enough about my dogs when I leave, I came home last night to an ear infection in one dog, and a puncture wound above the other one's eye. My dog is seven years old... she's never had an ear infection until the night before I leave :eyeroll:
The other one probably deserved what he got but now I have to worry about him the whole time. *le sigh*
