Just came home so excited to see my little ones and I am in shock over their treatment by a FELLOW VET STUDENT.

1) The water bowls were all either empty or disgusting. Clearly not cleaned or refilled in the 12 days.
2) There were chewed on empty food containers, chinese food mustard packets partially eaten, and a can of cat food.
3) Not surprisingly, there was diarrhea everywhere. I mean, one of my dogs has IBD and can't even eat normal dog food let alone leftover human food.
4) The cat litter hadn't been cleaned in days after I specifically said the dogs will eat the cat poo if not cleaned daily.
5) The dogs were running free in the house which they are not supposed to do alone, since it increased their anxiety (and leads to guess what... GI problems).
6) Less seriously but an indication of lack of care: garbage cans were left out from 2 days ago, the sink was full of dirty dishes, and the house smelled.
7) More seriously, all 3 of my pets lost a significant amount of weight (I asked to weigh them every few days to be sure that didn't happen).

I mean this a person who I paid to live in my house to give my pets a high standard of care, and is going to be a vet for freakin sake. I mean if there is diarrhea all over the place don't you clean it up, and more importantly do something about it... like take it to the vet.

It is clear to me the dogs were on no schedule at all, which anyone who knows the first thing about dog care would realize is an invitation to trouble not to mention leave goddamn food out.

I am so upset right now. Maybe I am wrong to expect anything better from my future colleagues, but this is the first time I have been let down by a fellow-vet student.
:boom::boom:

Holy hell!!!! 😡 I would be kicking someone's ass right now if I were you. That person should definitely not be going into the vet profession if they cannot even manage to provide proper care for someone's pets for a few days. I feel so bad for you and your animals SOV. I am sure they are beyond happy to have you back home.

(side story - When I first moved out to LA back in 2005 I was working at a dog rescue and living on site. I decided to fly back to Michigan for a quick trip for christmas since my mom had cancer at the time and wanted to spend the holidays with my family. I had arranged with a coworker to take care of my dogs and cat - went over with her the full particulars and she lived on site as well, so it was not a hard task for her to do. I came back a few days later to find that she had never taken care of my animals at all - had not even lifted a finger. Thankfully one of the other coworkers on the property noticed that no one was looking after my pets pretty early and my dogs were moved into kennels and my cat was taken care of, but the whole thing was beyond ridiculous. I mean the girl's job was to care of dogs on a daily basis and she could not bother to pet sit my dogs like she had committed to. )

Thanks for all your comments.

Couldn't sleep much last night I was so angry.... but I am trying to return to equanimity because it is better for the dogs and cat if we are calm than not.

Looks like the cat wasn't fed every day ( i can tell by the amount of cans used)... She was voracious this morning, but back to normal now! 🙂

Luckily they adjust a lot quicker than us over-thinking humans!

They are all alive, hadn't eaten anything to give them worse than the poops, and are happy to have you home.

I would just reevaluate your views on the person that cared for them... and maybe let your wife go off on them. She seems like she would be a spitfire.

And next time, ask a friend, or pay a business I guess.

So this person was living in your house and everything? Blech.

Thanks TT.

And you are right on Mrs. SOV, but her revenge plots scare me sometimes:scared:

Usually i have one of a couple vet friends stay over..in the future, if they can't I reschedule!

That's awful SOV. I hope your guys return to normal real quick. I would be so pissed if that happened to me.
Thanks. We have been spending a peaceful day together.
One nice part is I don't have to worry about over-feeding them for the next few days, so I can spoil them all I want.

My cat is schizo (well, if you want to be technical, more likely bipolar). I'm going on vacation in a week or so (!) and we had a friend come in to meet the dog and the cat. We're going to be away a lot this summer because my family is helping me move in, so this is only one trip of many.

Cat proceeds to bite me (!) and has a major freak out. Everything was cool after a while, but I'm so not happy with Levi right now. This is the first time I've been bitten by a cat. Ironic that it's my own. 🙄

He can be so cute/sweet when he wants to be...

As someone who makes a good deal of money pet-sitting, I am utterly appalled. When people entrust their animals and belongings to you, it is a big deal. I would hope that either you or Mrs. SOV tells this person to go pound sand... I mean seriously - do NOT pay him any more money. I would demand he pay you back for what you did give him. I have cared for my share of handful households - injections every 8 hours, dogs who had to be walked at 12,2,4,and 6 am or they would urinate in the house - but I do it, exactly as the owner requests, because I have a conscience and I would feel horrible about taking someone's money and not doing what was asked of me...

I'm glad your animals are alive and so far seem to have no lasting damage.

Boyfriend and I decide to stay in tonight and cook because, let's admit it, we are lazy as **** today and don't want to leave the house. Decide to make greens and beans. Start said greens and beans. No beans. NO BEANS. off to the store 😡

I cannot believe a vet student would let something like this happen. I'm sorry you had to come back from a great vacation to this mess SOV. I'm glad to hear your pets are doing better!

One girl in my class had a classmate watch her cats for her while she went away over break during first year, and the person who was supposed to watch the cats (not even like, stay there, just check in and feed them and give them water and ****) told her after she had already left town that oh by the way, I'm going home (not near Davis) for a couple of weeks and I left the toilet seats up for your cats.

And when my friend got back home, her whole apartment was flooded (which is unrelated but at least if the classmate had been going to her place it would have been noticed earlier and perhaps dealt with before permanent damage was done), her cats had torn into the food bags due to desperation and they had no fresh water to drink.

This is exactly why I will not leave my babies alone with my roommate for more than 2 days. If I am out of town for more than 2 days, I ask my mom to check in on them. He never thinks to do anything. Just flat out doesn't think about it, even if I leave him explicit instructions. 😕 (Depression and ADD?) I want to foster kittens again this year, but I can't trust him to not leave crap all over the place. Now, I'm no clean freak, but he's bad. Old food/containers, cigarette butts, trash, etc. I'm the only one who ever cleans and his room is just a disaster! I'm hoping he moves out this year. 👍 😎

I hope I can find someone I really know and trust in Vet School or else I will never leave for vacations. And SOV's experience makes me doubt fellow students :scared:

Minor rant. I don't wanna go to work. Just being a baby.

I think we all just need to find someone who has the same standard of care we have for their pets as we do for ours? You'd think it would be easy in vet school?

Wow. Just wow. The only excuse for that would be if they had some sort of traumatic brain injury while supposedly caring for your pets.

I'm in the city now, and have experience dealing with an IBD kitty who is a literal sh*tmonster, in case you ever need a weekend sitter.

He might still get a traumatic brain injury.....when I see him.

But, it is amazing how quickly just a regular schedule, regular food, and clean water has led to recovery and no accidents. It isn't really rocket science.

Thanks for the offer. I'm not going anywhere for now!

And Nyanko and wolfie, those stories are nightmares. :scared:

I'm hoping that if you find someonewho takes good care if their own animals maybe they'd require good care of you'd too 😕

You would think. I got an awesome petsitting job when a fellow vet assistant never stayed the night like she was being paid to do and allowed her druggie ex husband into the house.. People just don't care about anyone but themselves

My last day of work is on Thursday. It just isn't coming quickly enough. At least I get one day off before my last day. I just wish it would come faster, I have no motivation to go to work anymore.

It's like 45 degrees, windy, and raining....

Scottish Summer is NOT summer. Want to go home to sun and margaritas 🙁

Ditto to this - Cloudy and intermittent rain here as well - boooooo

Come visit and we can go play at the pub together in this crappy weather. :meanie:

I just found my 3 year old gerbil, Hawk, dead in his cage. I've been worried about him for a few months now. He was acting slower and breathing a bit more heavily, but he was otherwise acting normally: eating, drinking and chewing cardboard.

I took him out to clean his cage yesterday and noticed he looked very old. I checked him over and he appeared fine. I think cleaning his cage might have stressed him too much.

Anyway, he lived a horrible life before I got him and I think he had a good 2.5 years with his cagemate Beeg and I. I had to have Beeg put down in February.

This is the picture I got of him yesterday before I put him back in the cage.

I still have Mac left. Mac bites though and hates being held :/

Aww, I'm so sorry! 🙁 I used to have gerbils, too.

Honestly, I will never understand some people. Never.

Sorry about that... but to me, the bold part is the key.... especially for those who have rescued an animal. Well done to you and sorry for your loss.

That's why this isn't bothering me as much as having to have Beeg put down. I think I did a good job taking care of them. I have been really worried about Hawk and I am a little relieved that he left. It was hard watching him in his old age. I am glad I didn't have to take him to the emergency clinic like I had to do with Beeg.

Thanks everyone!

Aww Trema I am so sorry. I am so glad he had a good life with you to end with.

My roommate has been on the xbox with her annoying little talking thing where she can shout at other people for over 6 hours straight.... :bang::bang::bang:

Sorry about Hawk 🙁 I know you loved both Beeg and Hawk very much and you took amazing care of them.

Sorry trem 🙁. It's so rare that pocket pets ever get the care they need or have anyone ever advocate for them. Hawk and Beeg were so incredibly lucky to have had you look after them.

While sanitizing a stall, I walked backwards and stepped into a foot bath, tipped it over and emptied the whole thing into my boot. Cool. Gonna have a yellow calf and foot for a while..

So sorry Trema. He was lucky to have you as his gerbil mom.

This is the reason that I now board my dogs (the clinic where I work has a separate boarding facility) when I go out of town. I haven't had the same kind of horror stories you guys have, but my dogs got out once (we live on a really busy street) which wasn't really anyone's fault and I freaked a little and decided to trust professionals. 🙁 It's unbelievable how some people just don't handle their responsibilities.

That worries me too. 🙁 I have a spoiled wiener that sleeps under the covers in my bed at night and it would break my heart for her not to be able to snuggle someone. Yes, that probably says more about me than her, but I still don't think I could do it.

Lol! I know what you mean. I still stress about it, but I board mine together (and pay extra) for a large run (even though they are small beagles). The kennel employees aren't allowed to separate them because my little male gets really anxious when he can't see his sister 🙂 I also pack them their own blankets and toys. I guess if I only had one dog, I might worry a lot more! But I figure that they have each other and I totally trust the staff there.

I love pet sitting for other people. It's one of my favorite jobs! It sucks that other people don't take it serious though! ):

All this petsitter talk has really gotten into my psyche. I'm going to sit for these two adorable cockers that I've been sitting for since they were little puppies starting today. Last night I had this nightmare where I was staying at their house, but somehow realized 2 days later that I hadn't taken care of them at all. Like they were locked up in some kennel runs in the back yard (they do not actually have kennel runs), and not only did I forget to bring them inside, I never gave them water or food. I was horrified when I came to this realization and ran out there to make sure they were still alive. That's when I woke up in a cold sweat.

If only every pet sitter had your conscience! I think this is a good thing!

I used to do a lot of cat sitting (yeah I sat on cats :meanie:) and it was even worse that I would go into these houses and find the cat's litter boxes in such states I do not even know how they used them they were so damn filthy. UGH! Now I don't know if the people just left them like that since they knew I was coming or just did not bother to scoop them every day or multiple times a day with multiple cats. For me, even when I had one cat I would scoop for sure after every #2 and then at least once a day otherwise. But I remember one house I went to there had to be like a weeks worth of **** and pee between 2 litter boxes for the 2 cats living there. It took me a few bags to scoop them out and fully clean them and then I replenished the litter. :wtf:
