Stupid is as stupid does. I learned long ago to pick my battles carefully online. Don't argue with idiots - they drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
I know this. I really really do. But every so often someone comes along and says something so incredibly stupid that I can't hold myself back from trying to correct them. And it always goes the same way. It's like watching your favorite movie for the hundredth time - you know exactly what's going to happen, but it's still funny every single time. For example:
1.) Other person makes wild claim on Facebook status, usually fishing for "likes"
2.) I respond and calmly explain why wild claim is incorrect.
3.) Other person uses the one or two half-baked arguments they've picked up from the media headlines.
4.) I refute arguments, usually citing sources.
5.) Other person devolves into name calling and mud slinging because they've run out of useful things to contribute to the discussion.
6.) I add further points I believe are useful contributions, and often point to parts of the other person's arguments that I actually agree with.
7.) Other person becomes even more infuriated that I'm not fully agreeing with them.
We've reached Step 6 at this point . . . pretty sure we're going to reach the final "Facebook defriending" any minute now. Because, you know, that's totally mature and definitely converts me to your way of thinking.
🙄
Edit: Oh, yup, there it is. Good riddance. smh.
