RANT HERE thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think med students get too much information on human nutrition either. There is definitely a double standard present if my previous statement is true.

I absolutely agree! I wonder if some people (and sometimes doctors) tend to feel "more educated" about human nutrition because of all the garbage and new diet trends that circulate on the internet and in the media these days. Whatever the case may be, it's ridiculous, and yes, there is certainly a double standard.

Go Foxhunter, go! I love seeing stupid people get crushed. Makes my day. 😀

My rant: idiot yellow belt nearly choked me out in my Krav Maga class last night. Attacked me from behind during a "bar room brawl" drill and clamped down as hard as he possibly could directly over my trachea. I'm all for real world scenarios and being aggressive in Krav, but that was completely uncalled for. Even the instructors never EVER choke anyone with anything even close to that much force. I actually started to go severely lightheaded before I was able to get him off of me, and I still have the red marks of his fingers on my neck nearly 12 hours later.

This is the second time this jerk has come close to seriously injuring me. All he wants to do is show off, and he seems to think that injuring his training partner is "proof" that he's good at Krav. I swear, if he pulls anything like this on me again, I'm just going to deck him and to hell with the consequences. 😡

Today is going to be a crazy busy horrible day for a long time. Then wonderful and relaxing. Then crazy busy horrible.

Back to work today... I really hate this place. Just 2 1/2 more weeks.

Hahahah, woops! Meant to post this in here, but then posted it in the original thread...
Let's try this again.

I wasn't really that irritated reading most of that thread. Everyone is being reasonable except for the one. But then I read the most recent post:

I also really enjoy that veterinary students and veterinarians are unable to think for themselves.

I do have a question for those of you who have had nutrition in vet school though. Do you feel that with your knowledge you could sit down with a client and make a plan for a raw diet from scratch? Or really evaluate one without specific break downs of nutritional content? I feel like that might be beyond the abilities of your average practitioner, no? I work with a vet who has a masters and several years of PhD (didn't finish, went to vet school instead) in nutrition in addition to her dvm and I don't think she would be capable of it.

I was just recently reading something about how they went through and evaluated a whole bunch of raw diets (many of which were created by veterinarians) and only two out of the 25 or so were nutritionally sound. And those were created by boarded veterinary nutritionists. Let me see if I can find it.

Oh hellz no I would not formulate any home diets. I would refer those, particularly the raw diet people. My understanding is that vet nutritionists also cringe at the idea of raw. And after seeing a study that said that even with very well formulated diets with very conscientious owners that try to follow directions to the T, they almost invariably stray and the diet ends up being unbalanced if sent for analysis a month later or something like that. I will try to find it. As an owner, I would only feel comfortable doing a home diet if my cats/dogs had no other viable choice... As much as i dont think food companies are perfect, they do a pretty good job in terms of dogs/cats not ending up with deficiencies. And I'd be scared to do it without periodically sending samples off or nutritional analysis (something I will not likely be able to afford).

But what do I know, I'm just an uninformed vet student. Please consult an ecology major at your local university for expert advice.

I think vet nutrition is super fascinating, but I would never ever consider it as a specialty because a good hunk of the clientele = special breed of soul suck. There are enough of those in regular GP already. I couldn't handle any more.

I have been following the thread.... was too tired last night to respond.... trying to avoid responding today so I don't tear him a new one..... we will see how long I last

Well he's a ****ing hypocrite! He says calling him close minded name calling but he called ALL vets close minded! And he says every single vet he's met balks at raw diet for dogs? MAYBE THAT SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING!

Yeah he is quite close minded...

I am probably the only one here who is ok with raw diets... but they have to be done right... I have a lot of friends in the dog world who do raw... namely the BARF diet.... and it works well for them... but these are extremely dedicated dog owners whose dogs are in competitions/shows.... I would not ever recommend them for the average dog owner and hell I do not have the time and energy/or money to do it correctly myself.....

And he pretty much said that all vet studies are unreliable and also made assumptions as to how nutrition is taught to vets which was downright false....

What a [insert expletive] jerk! I hope you can switch to a new training partner who isn't such a loose cannon or maybe get permission to kick him in the manly bits every time he does something stupid like that.

I bought a Groupon for Krav Maga classes a few weeks ago. Maybe I'll just give it away to someone else... :scared:

Yeah you should talk to the instructor about that, because that's not cool. Crap like that is how people get seriously injured.

mother f-er.

my friend that offered to drive my 5 cats up to Ithaca for me just had to cancel because she got a new job and can't take time off. 😡 Now I need to recruit someone else... 5 cats will not fit into the cab of the truck with us!

Dude, not cool. You should tell your instuctor. No one with that attitude should be taught advanced techniques. Krav, like all martial arts, is for people who can control themselves.

Reminds me of a funny story though. Back when I used to train Aikido, I only really got hurt once: I was uke (the attacker) for a new guy working on disarming techniques for knives. Well, he threw me and pinned me just fine, but forgot that he actually had to take the knife out of my hand when he twisted it...resulting in me dropping the knife onto my head. Wooden training knives are heavy

My dog was recently put on steroids for his skin allergies, and the PU/PD he's suffering is crazy. It's never been this bad for him, and he's no stranger to a tapering dose of prednisone. Last night he peed on both the floor and my bed, but I can't even really be too upset because I realize its a drug side-effect.

I am getting frustrated trying to find a new flat to move into. I have to give my current landlord a 30 day notice that I am moving, that is part of the lease agreement that I signed. I found a really nice flat today that is a 10 second walk from the bus stop I need to the school and is in an area that quite a few other vet students live in. The flat is in my price range and won't cause me to go bankrupt by some insanely high deposit. However, the landlord is looking for someone that will move in soon, very soon. I can't move in very soon as I have to give 30 days notice... ugh. To my benefit, the landlord also wants someone who will stay long-term and I told him that I will be around for 3 years, so hopefully he will be willing to give up that move in soon for a guaranteed long-term let. There was a bunch of other people there to view the flat today and everyone wants the flat so I have a feeling he will just agree to give it to whoever can move in right away. I am hoping that maybe he won't, but I doubt it. Well, keeping my fingers crossed but I have an odd feeling that I won't get this flat either. :lame:

Have any other prospects on the horizon if this one doesn't pan out?

Have any other prospects on the horizon if this one doesn't pan out?

I just sent out an email to another place that looks decent. It would take me two buses again to get out the vet school though. It is just very difficult to find flats that are in my price range, don't have an insanely high cost for a deposit (a flat that is 485 pounds/month should not have a deposit of 750-800 pounds..ugh), allows pets and is near the bus routes to the school. It is getting frustrating especially since I am running out of time. I am gone all day Monday-Friday from 7:30AM until 6:30PM (at the earliest) and this town shuts down at 5PM... literally shuts down. Most places are not open, this includes to view flats. I have gotten lucky a couple times and had a late enough viewing but most don't run past 5PM and only some will show places on the weekend. I refuse to agree on a place without viewing it first. Also, I leave on August 15th to head back home, so I have until maybe July 1st to let my landlord know if I am moving out... as that puts me moving into a place on August 1st (don't really want to move in after that for different reasons).

That's really soon. 🙁 I hope you find a place! House hunting sucks (at least imo 😉)

Strangulation is a huge hazard to your life. Sudden, delayed swelling caused by strangulation like you describe can kill you hours after the incident. This guy is putting people's lives at risk and your instructor should be informed about it.

Srsly, that is awful and it makes me so angry. 😡

Oh man......today was a good day, with a bit of horribly depressing sprinkled on top.

Our ambulance driver picked up HBC injured dog, and it died on the way back to the shelter. The dog's wounds were extensive....very very very bad. The dog looked familiar but we see brown pit/hound dogs all the time. Well he had a microchip and it turns out he was adopted from us about 6 months ago. Contacted the owner and he came right away from work. He wanted to see the dog so a tech laid it on the EU room table and covered up all the wounds/got it cleaned up. Guy came in and was hysterical. He was a middle aged Spanish guy and was crying, hugging the dog and talking to him in Spanish. So....soooooo sad. 🙁 The tech that I work with began crying. She never, ever gets emotional with public viewings. She speaks Spanish and apparently the guy was telling the dog that this cant be happening and he couldn't leave him because he is the only family he has here and he cant live with out his best friend. 🙁

I guess he was paying someone a good bit of money to watch the dog while he was at work all day and that person dropped the ball and didnt bother looking for him when he got out this morning. The tech offered to get him free private cremation and he declined because he couldnt stand to be reminded how he lost his best friend. 🙁

Trying to figure out why it hurts my ankle to stand. I know why my knee hurts (well not really). But suddenly had severe pain starting at around 4 pm today when weight bearing. Gonna be a fun couple of days this weekend

Spent the night vacuuming water out of my basement as a drain pipe decided that after 125 years, it was time to burst. I guess they just don't make pipes like they used to.

Then the database I have been working on for work was deleted when my new MAC crashed (might have been my fault for let it run out of power)...
I was going to back it up today but got distracted by the basement problem (about 2 weeks work). Luckily there was a backup copy around. Thank you redundancy.

Could have been much worse, but not the relaxing night I was hoping for after staying up 1/2 the night yesterday.

I somehow managed to sprain my ankle at work today without realizing it. And I work all weekend. Apparently on crutches per human dr. Gonna be a fun one

Oh goodness. 🙁 I'm sorry.

Agreed. I wish I had talked to the instructor immediately after class, but I didn't think of it. Guess it will have to wait until my next class. Fortunately I don't see this guy in class very often, and even when I do he usually partners his friend (who both looks and acts like the troll in Harry Potter) so I don't have too much contact with him.

What a [insert expletive] jerk! I hope you can switch to a new training partner who isn't such a loose cannon or maybe get permission to kick him in the manly bits every time he does something stupid like that.

I'm guessing your Groupon is for the same place that I'm training at. You should go! I've been there over a month now and I've had no incidents whatsoever aside from this one idiot, and even then I've only seen him in class a couple of times. Everyone else there is super friendly and supportive. And you'll get to train with a 71 year old great grandmother who is a second degree black belt - she's kind of my hero.

Funny you should mention manly bits, since the choke defenses all include a groin strike. In training you're supposed stop short of actually hitting your partner, but if this guy ever chokes me again I'm going to nail him in the balls and pretend it was an accident. :meanie:

Oh nooo 🙁(( Feel better!!!

I'm going to be single forever because apparently I'm not the girl that gets to be loved long term.

I can actually sympathize/commiserate with this statement. At this point I no longer get my hopes up about men. I have a sweet little girl, wonderful family members, I'm doing what I want to do with my life, and I can always get a sperm donor in the future if I decide I want another child.

I'm going to be single forever because apparently I'm not the girl that gets to be loved long term.

I can understand this feeling... as it feels like everyone around me has found the right person and here I am still at 31 and single... not for lack of trying either.... it just feels like I will never meet the right guy and no one will ever want me/love me....

but I refuse to give up hope cause if I do then what's the point.....

^^^ Many of those people who found the "right person" and are deliriously happy right now will be divorced or incredibly unhappy within 5-10 years. *shrug*

i'm jumping on the i hate men bandwagon and the tired of being single one too.

That's horrible! A couple years ago when I was volunteering at the shelter we had a Pomeranian come in dead due to HBC. A few hours later the family showed up looking for their dog. Apparently their home had been broken into while the parents were at work/kids at school and the robber left the front door wide open. Their dog must have bolted straight into the street and been killed. Seeing how upset the family was definitely difficult to see and made us all cry.

Ugh. So my dogs are fighting. Well, that's probably too drastic. They are very vocally squabbling with teeth bared and some tooth contact but no broken skin. My dude is new to us by a month so I know they're just figuring their stuff out. And it's only been a couple times over the last day or two but it's stressing me out.

That sucks! 🙁

Are they fighting over resources like toys, food, or your attention? Or does it seem to be just random fights?

Perhaps separate them when you are gone to give them each their own space for a few hours to chill....

It started over treats. My girly eats fast and is a thief. She's mostly been around dogs that are like "Oh, yeah I guess it's ok that you stole my chew" so she's never been put in her place. But new dude isn't food aggressive, just very worried about getting enough to eat (poor guy). Well, yesterday they were in the kennel together and I'm pretty sure she tried to steal his chew (they'd had them in there before) but I'll I'm sure of is the growling and his teeth around her neck. Then yesterday when we were home he was laying on the couch and she jumped up and kind of landed on him a little bit. He snarled and bit her (like I said no broken skin though) and knocked her off the couch. Well because she got knocked off she couldn't retaliate but I did. I pounced immediately since I was on the other end of the couch and had him by the scruff in submissive position and was in his face telling him that wasn't ok in a growly voice.

Lol *I* am the alpha in that house 😛

Reading-related headaches suck. Trying to work in excel when you have one is not fun. C'mon long weekend! 🙁

This is really not recommended. I would recommend consulting a positive reinforcement trainer in your area or a veterinary behaviorist (don't want to get into behavior advice online, since it was deemed that that could be considered veterinary advice)
