I have another rant about this place I am working at (again):
It is really hot out today, low 70's, sun out constantly and the humidity is super high. (I know 70's doesn't seem hot, but for here, that is hot). Anyway, they usually put the animals (rabbits and guinea pigs) outside during the day in larger hutches so that they can eat the grass and enjoy the fresh air. Well, even this morning it was REALLY hot and while there is shade provided in the form of small buckets that they have cut holes into so that animals can get in them (bucket is placed upside down), they really just act as little ovens... it is shady in them, but really hot inside. So if the animals are outside, they really only have a shady oven to keep away from the sun.. 😡
So I ask the supervisor of the pet lodge area if he really wants the animals outside... I say, "Hey, it is really hot outside, are you sure you want us to put the animals outside today? I think it might be best not to." And he says no, put them outside it is fine and they are watering the lawn so the water in the lawn will provide a cool floor... ugh. I am thinking, no it will make it MORE humid.. anyway, we let them outside and watch them constantly. The other vet student and I kept finding random things to throw on top of the hutches to provide better shade than the oven-buckets. Unfortunately, our efforts were not enough, we came back from lunch and one of the guinea pigs was lying unresponsive, but still alive... we started cooling him down brought him into the shade, everything we could... but he died.. 🙁😡
I am just pissed.. I knew it was too hot for them to be out there. I mentioned it was. I should have been more firm about not allowing them outside. Ugh. It really is a Catch-22 though because "inside" is actually a shed with a bunch of cages and the sheds are poorly ventilated, stagnant air sits within them, there are NO fans, NO vents, nothing. Just the whole set-up is bad. This is now the 4th animal that has died at this place in the 13 days I have been there. 🙁😡
