If a cats got high renal values why would you NOT check the cats urine?

Back at my old hospital dealing with dr b's messes again (just as relief).

Did I mention it belongs to an assistant? Who is now asking me why they wouldn't? And that the kitty is now blocked?

🙁

And now I am feeling bad that I have made the decision to leave my cat behind for all 4 years. It is what is best for her, but it breaks my heart.

Leaving behind for vet school =/= craigslist ads about how much you love your kitty but cant possibly move with them because landlord says no / don't have time / cat needs more love and time

FWIW, moving 5 hours away and moving overseas are very different. We recently had a client who was moving overseas surrender his 21-year old siamese because he didn't think he'd make the flight. The kitty now lives with our weekend receptionist and is completely smothered in love on a daily basis. 😀

I know. I still feel bad though. I adopted her and she is my responsibility, I miss her so much. But she is being well cared for by my parents. I just decided (recently actually) that it would not be fair to fly her overseas for 3 years during which there will be periods that I will have to be away and I will have to find someone to watch her or board her. She attaches herself to one person and is very dependent on that one person then, so it would stress her out a lot to be moved over here and then to be shuttled around to other people when I am away. Just isn't fair to her. But it is breaking my heart that what is best for her is being away from me. 🙁

Don't feel bad - she is still being cared for by your family so it's not like you posted her on Craigslist or took her to a shelter. I have two dogs and three cats. One of my dogs will be staying with my parents while I am in school since she has high anxiety and is fearful around new people. I feel guilty about leaving her but she loves my parents and they adore her, so I think it will be good for everyone.

My other dog and cats are making the move. I have definitely been asked if I'm getting rid of them. Um no, they moved with me from Colorado back to Wisconsin and now they will be moving again.

I have another rant about this place I am working at (again):

It is really hot out today, low 70's, sun out constantly and the humidity is super high. (I know 70's doesn't seem hot, but for here, that is hot). Anyway, they usually put the animals (rabbits and guinea pigs) outside during the day in larger hutches so that they can eat the grass and enjoy the fresh air. Well, even this morning it was REALLY hot and while there is shade provided in the form of small buckets that they have cut holes into so that animals can get in them (bucket is placed upside down), they really just act as little ovens... it is shady in them, but really hot inside. So if the animals are outside, they really only have a shady oven to keep away from the sun.. 😡

So I ask the supervisor of the pet lodge area if he really wants the animals outside... I say, "Hey, it is really hot outside, are you sure you want us to put the animals outside today? I think it might be best not to." And he says no, put them outside it is fine and they are watering the lawn so the water in the lawn will provide a cool floor... ugh. I am thinking, no it will make it MORE humid.. anyway, we let them outside and watch them constantly. The other vet student and I kept finding random things to throw on top of the hutches to provide better shade than the oven-buckets. Unfortunately, our efforts were not enough, we came back from lunch and one of the guinea pigs was lying unresponsive, but still alive... we started cooling him down brought him into the shade, everything we could... but he died.. 🙁😡

I am just pissed.. I knew it was too hot for them to be out there. I mentioned it was. I should have been more firm about not allowing them outside. Ugh. It really is a Catch-22 though because "inside" is actually a shed with a bunch of cages and the sheds are poorly ventilated, stagnant air sits within them, there are NO fans, NO vents, nothing. Just the whole set-up is bad. This is now the 4th animal that has died at this place in the 13 days I have been there. 🙁😡

Exactly what was said before. You moved overseas. I'm moving to another state. Not even remotely close. And you did take care of her by arranging care from your parents. From whom you can get updates and keep tabs on your kitty.

🙁

You left her with your parents with whom she is comfortable.... so that is not the same at all... no need to feel bad...

I left one of my dogs with 2 very good friends as he would not have done well over here.

But on another note, not having to do with you, I do not believe moving overseas is a reason to dump a pet either (and this does not mean leaving with family/friends - this means dumping at shelter)...... I moved to Ireland with 2 senior dogs.... it can be done without issues.... and pets adjust just fine.... so people who use the excuse that they are moving overseas and can't keep their pets are full of BS

The people that handle finances at this college are so incompetent, I swear...

I made plans to live on campus but I cancelled them in June after realizing that it wasn't worth the loans. I went through resident life (who had to have me show up because they "didn't get my e-mail" and my last name doesn't match up with the phonetics of it when I called them, even though I left my stupid ID number. /rage) and everything, making sure it was canceled.

So I called the business office the other day to check how much tuition was and it turns out that they were still charging me for the room and the meal plan. I told them that I canceled it, and they told me to "call rez life" which I did again, got the guy to promise me to call them.

I had to send them an e-mail to get the meal plan off, supposedly. They responded to me and everything, saying it was taken care of.

I got a bill from them in the mail today- it still has the dorm and the meal plan on it.

Ugh, it drives me crazy.

Yeah, it's just one of those things. My family would fight me to the death if I tried to take the dogs away with me anyway. It's better this way.

Exactly guys. I may have a slightly different situation than some of you too, in that I do not live with my family. I haven't for a really long time. All of my animals are just mine, I got them while I was out on my own. So whole 'nother ball o' wax.

Yeah... ummm... you know my feels on this.....

the guy is a douche nozzle IMO..... keep the cats.....

tell him that most girls once they find out that he dumped 2 cats to move cross country will realize he has no idea what commitment really is and not want to date him.... nor does he have a heart....

Oh yeah...I let him have it after those comments.

We won't even go into the fact that he pursued me for over a year and whined and bitched when I wouldn't give in to dating him. I don't do long distance...period.

Guess I escaped from more than I originally thought....🙄

I'm a little irritated that pretty much every health insurance would be required to keep me on past when I turn 23 soon... except my parents'. Gotta love military exceptions.

asked a client to call tomorrow regarding her dogs hw and fecal tests to the lab. she sniffs and looks up at me like "so you'll call me?" i repeated no, please call tomorrow to follow up on the tests. she stares at me and goes "so you people can't even make a simple phone call?" i stated that we try to call if it's positive but just as an assurance please touch base regarding the tests. she stared further and just goes "well you'll be in touch, if you can figure out how to."

I meant to ask about this earlier.. so you guys do not call owners with test results? Cause every clinic that I have worked at we called the owner and told them the hw test or fecal result even if negative (we would also record it in the client record that the owner had been called, if we talked to the owner directly, left a message, etc, etc). We actually preferred that they did NOT call us because many times we would not have someone available when they called to discuss results if they were not negative or if the test had not been recorded in the patient history yet then we would have to tell them that we will call them back or call them once the results are in the record.

👍 This is also how my clinic operates. I'd much rather call you and let you know that the fecal/hw/whatever test was negative and leave you a voicemail than be interrupted when I'm trying to to actually do some work!

The one I worked at before was this way. The techs/assistants would call about negative fecal tests, but then the doctor would call if it was + or for bloodwork. HWT, etc we were able to get done before the appointment was over. We also had to send BW/fecals out so we told clients they'd usually get a call within two days.

At my current practice, we just call if we find something in fecals since BW and everything is usually done before the exam is over. The fecals don't always get done right away though.

Ah, good point. If something is positive, obviously the vet makes the call to let them know what kind of meds to pick up. Blood test calls are done by the vets regardless.

Yeah, this is what we do as well. Usually. We still call for negatives though because clients will call asking about it if we don't. Also, the vets still have the techs call for + fecals as well... and explain that we will need to do a course of deworming, blah, blah, blah... sometimes the vets would call but usually it was us techs. Techs also were the ones looking at the fecals on the microscope. Some BW was done in house, depending on what it was for/how long it would take/etc, we might have had it done before they left, if not the vet called them after. A lot of BW was sent out though as well and the the vet always called for that. But, we never had clients calling us to get results.

Weird. Where I worked the techs called for everything unless it really bad news like kidney failure or bx results and it's cancer or something. The doctor would look and tell us what to say. "Dr. XX looked at the results and Fluffy has low T4"

One of my good childhood friends ended his life recently. I am having a hard time dealing. My brain and heart are broken. He was always so happy and we had the best times together. 🙁

I guess you just never know. 😕

I am so sorry. :C

Prayers go out to his family during this difficult time. I send my condolences.

Found out today that a good friend from high school was found dead in his bedroom today. His poor brother found him when his work called to ask why he wasn't at work 🙁 they believe he had a massive seizure ( he has a history of seizures) .. Very very sad.. And I'm supposed to be driving to NY this weekend so I will likely miss the visitation and funeral 🙁

Oh, dear...

My now high school senior friends dealt with a loss that has very similar circumstances within a month and a half ago. A girl had a seizure in the shower and drowned. 🙁

I'm sorry for your loss as well. I send my condolences his family and friends (you inclusive).

Is it just me, or has this year just been miserable?

There was a similar instance of seizure drowning here not too long ago... You aren't from Nashville are you?

I'm very sorry Momma fox 🙁

Work is irritating the heck out of me! Not only am I losing 2 1/2 more hours than I thought I would next week, one of my coworkers is just so lazy. For starters, one of my best friends is getting married next Wednesday so I asked for the day off because it's in a town 4 hours away and I'm the maid of honor. I figured to balance out the one day I will be gone, I would end up working until close every day even though I usually have one day that I don't work until close. I have 2 days where I get off early plus my day off to go to the wedding. Great, now my paycheck is going to be down like $60 which is like 2 tanks of gas. Then my coworker fricken sat on his butt for a half hour playing candy crush on his phone and I had to ask him to go clean out a dirty cage. He's been there 3 years longer than I have and I still have to ask him to do his job. UGH! Frustrated!!

To those worrying about taking your animals with you, it's always better to put them in a situation where they'll be happy even if that isn't with you. Both my animals are still young so I plan on taking them with me, but that's the best choice for them. Don't feel bad about your decision and remember they're happier for it.

I'm afraid not- I'm in the North Carolina Piedmont.

We had a girl in my year fatally killed in a hit and run by a felon (rumor has it he's a drug mule). It's just been crazy.

I didn't really know her, which almost made it worse- I'm sort of easily affected by death and tragedy.

tricare?😡

Sent for cath placement and hospitalization. She's going to bring him to me from now on

Congrats on the 7,000th post! 😀

Rant/Depression/Current State of Mind: But the debt/income ratio numbers have been bumming the hell out of me. I've been seriously debating trying for the military's scholarship and at least being guaranteed a job.

I think it'd be interesting- both of my parents were Army folk and my dad has extended the offer to all of us that he'd go with us to any contract haggling. Both of them had stints as recruiters, lol. And my mom tells me that we'd be considered a part of the Medical branch so they get nicer recruiters. ^^;

Have any of you ever considered the Army as a way to pay off loans?

Yup. :c Fantastic insurance, but apparently exempt from some healthcare reform rules.
I know exactly how you feel. I aged out of tricare about 7 months ago and still haven't found something else because it's either really good and therefore expensive or affordable but will screw you over if something big happens. Everyone keeps asking me why I'm not on their insurance anymore or they tell me I should be covered until I'm 26. Um, no the military does not play by the insurance rules. They like shoving us into the real world a lot sooner.

Yup. :c Fantastic insurance, but apparently exempt from some healthcare reform rules.
I know 🙁 I joined the Tricare Young Adult Prime program, which allows me to stay as a dependent under my parents until I am 26. They have to pay a fee for me though. But Tricare is excellent. I am keeping them for vet school as well

I really hope you've reported this place! Even just to a professor. That is horrible! And people board their pets there? :scared:

I can't decide whether I want to just continue on the young adult program or just switch to my school's insurance. The school insurance is cheaper and probably more convenient (student health stuff is pretty much all covered), but I've had such fantastic experiences with Tricare and feel like it would be much better if something actually catastrophic happened. Plus they cover my BC 100% and I need to get it replaced in the upcoming year.

I'm just irritated that I even have to deal with it! I honestly had no idea that I was going to get kicked off the insurance until like two months ago. Grrrrrrr haha.

I've been seriously considering it for a few years now, but unfortunately since I'm going to school in Canada now I'm no longer eligible for the scholarship. 🙁

I'm thinking about direct commissioning after I graduate, but apparently they don't do a whole lot of that anymore. Just going to have to wait and play it by ear I guess.

If you're interested, there were a few threads on this recently. Try searching for "HPSP". The most recent thread was particularly informative.

Thanks for the tip!

Going to a school in a foreign country must be interesting. I'd do it if I thought I could afford it.

What makes you think we can afford it?

Perhaps a bad choice of words. ^^

Yeah, but that's my game plan. I'm single right now and I don't really have much of anything holding me anywhere, so if that's how I remain I think that'd be a good way to pay it off.

Check engine light came on in my car.. Car not running as smooth as normal. Fuuuudge. I move 1 week from today 🙁 gotta take it to the shop.

got blown off last night.. love rejection.

I'm so sorry. 🙁

Rejection super sucks.

A sort of rant- I told a guy I liked him almost a year ago and he hasn't really bothered to talk to me in months... I found out he's going to my UG this upcoming fall and I'm not sure how to feel. It just blows.

The thing that sucks the most is that the major beef between us was propagated by a broski of his. I mean, he did ignore me, and that super hurts still, but his friend literally says something jaded every time I'm out in public and the friend's there.

I miss being able to talk to him- being able to just chill in class together and do our work and joke around. I miss just being able to relax during lunch, I miss the times when it wasn't this awkward. I miss a lot of things and he's a good guy at heart.

But I don't think I can easily forgive him for just ignoring me. Hell, if he told me that he didn't like me, at least that wouldn't be a factor. But he literally has said nothing about it. I mean, you'd at least give a stranger the courtesy of knowing that they shouldn't waste their time with you. I haven't even gotten that. And that makes it suck worse because it makes me feel like he doesn't respect me enough to just tell me what's up.

I've tried to be a bigger person and tell him some of this, which he sort of takes and then doesn't do anything with. It feels like I'm ramming my head against a wall. Sorry, longwinded. /vent

Minor annoyances from today:

-I got scratched by a rabbit (again)

-I got bit by a rabbit. Seriously, the rabbit was just laying on my lap and suddenly chomped on my arm. :lame:

-I got stung by a stinging nettle.

-I had to put my foot down and tell the supervisor of the pet lodge NO to putting these animals outside again today. He wanted us to, even after what happened yesterday. He even said yesterday that we would keep them in, but today he was trying to get us to bring them out. I was really firm with my NO and they were able to stay inside. Whew. I should not have had to say no though.

-I got shampoo in my eye and it burns.

And today's massive RAVE:

I DON'T HAVE TO GO BACK TO THIS PLACE!!! 😀 😀
