Yeah, it definitely sounds like you made the right decision.

Right now we're trying quarantine with aquarium salt and betta fix. Not seeing any improvement yet but it's only been a couple days. He's still active and everything, his fins just look pretty torn up, and black around the edges.

I think black edges was the biggest sign of fin rot, so maybe he's going to be more treatable than my guy. I wish I could give you the huge thing of aquarium salt I have now. Have you looked into Stress Coat as well? With all of the water changes he'll be going through, I've heard that stuff can do wonders

Oh I hadn't even thought of that. I can pick some up after work tomorrow. I was worried about all the water changes really stressing him out.

Also, there are other methods of 'euthanizing' fish that are popular amongst hobby aquarists. Freezing is popular, and a lot of pet stores do it that way. I just wasn't comfortable with it and would not want to cause a moment of stress for the fish if I could avoid it. I dug up a paper on freezing vs. MS-222, and the scientists actually found freezing to be less distressing, but oh well. Others decapitate, but I didn't do that for obvious reasons.

I've read about that too, but I just wasn't comfortable with those methods I guess. All of the internet information was a bit too much for me to process. I even saw people recommending dunking the fish in vodka. I know that whether or not fish can feel pain is up in the air, but I mean come on.

Clove oil is how fish are anesthetized not in the US. It's not technically legal here, but we used at sgu and I used it in Mexico. Works just like ms222. It's a good anesthetic agent

I used clove oil + vodka. The idea is that the clove oil anesthetizes and then you follow with the vodka to euthanize. I'm no fish expert but he seemed to pass very peacefully. I was definitely more comfortable with that option than the freezing one, although he was so out of it he might not have even noticed.

There's seriously so many sources that swear by one method, condemn another. I likely would have gone the clove oil route had I not has access to the MS-222, but apparently freezing is actually approved by the AVMA. I feel like freezing gives me more opportunities to mess it up

There's been a serious calicivirus outbreak at the shelter, and they've recently had to euthanize a ton of cats to stop it. A few weeks ago, I had a client who adopted two kittens from there. One of them had a pretty bad URI, and at the 2 week recheck, kitty was much better but still having some symptoms. The client said her husband didn't want a sick pet that's always going to be sick, so she had taken the kitten back to the shelter before the recheck appointment so they could surrender it. The shelter staff told her it'd be euthanized if she really did surrender it since it was having active URI symptoms, so she was able to convince her husband to give the kitten a little more time to recover. I don't know if they ultimately ended up returning the "defective" kitten to the shelter, but if they did, it's definitely dead by now. YAY.

Came home from a month on externships/conferences... one of my ferrets has a half bald tail. Oh and a new to me, palpable mass in her abdomen, maybe? associated with her spleen. Time for an ultrasound and deslorelin! Also, my insulinoma dude was shaking a little bit and his BG was 30 points below normal for him. My SO was in charge of his pred while I was gone and I'm questioning whether that happened regularly, or if we need to start messing with his dose...

I'm not even LOOKING at the other two until tomorrow, because thus far this has not been great juju. Welcome home, Trilt.

At this point, I know it won't really affect much in terms of acceptance into vet school, but I've worked extremely hard for my 4.0 and would be really upset if I lost Summa Cum Laude on my expensive piece of paper to a lower-division introductory Microbiology class, in my final semester of undergrad. I'm getting A's in the heaviest Biochemistry classes that my university offers but have a C in this class.

If you're really worried about losing the A, it had to be more than one crappy question. Quick addendum: if you plan on Vet school and you care about 4.0s, you're gonna have a bad time. We're at the end of year 3 and there's literally a class with a reputation of taking away 4.0 from the precious few who got that far.

I'm not. In all honesty, I could care less, and I realize it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. But the fact that I'm in my final semester and it's an introductory class angers me to no end.

We had to euthanize one of our clinic kitties today 🙁 She had a lot of health issues, and when we got her we knew we probably wouldn't have much time with her, but it sucks. She was such a sweet cat, and had gotten really cuddly with us over the summer and basically lived in someones lap all day wanting snuggles. She had such an odd and loud meow. I'm going to really miss opening in the mornings and hearing her all the way from the front door wanting out of her room for attention.

None of my micro exams were that unreasonable, but some questions came close. My instructor was the worst I've ever had - she read off her slides, didn't answer questions or explain concepts well, and she'd often make condescending comments in lecture.

My final grade was a 89.4. She decided not to curve grades at all (after repeatedly saying she would) so my grade didn't get rounded up, and I got a B. Which is what I earned, based on the numbers, but still . . .

My lab, on the other hand, was absolutely fantastic. Probably because that instructor wasn't in charge of it at all. 🙄

I look back fondly on the time when I earned a 4.0 in organic chem lab, but the prof mistyped and gave me a 3.5. "Sorry, all grades are final once sent to the registar." Took it to the dean. "Sorry, this is something you need to handle with the professor." Took it to the ombudsman. "Sorry, but all grading-related policies are made by the class professor." So nevermind that I kept all assignments and it was clear I had a 4.0.

Mind you, I lived almost 2 hours away when I was home for the summer and driving up 2-3x a week to try and get this crapola sorted out. Kept having scheduled times to meet with the prof, and he kept blowing me off. For one of the meetings he scheduled with me, the dean looked on his calendar and said "Hmm...he's actually on vacation with his family and has been since last week."

Now my eye twitch has returned.

Yeah, one of my classes this semester decided not to grade on a curve and I got an 89.5 (possibly higher, but I can't count his discretionary points). I have a B on the transcript. I was totally aiming for a 4.0 despite giving birth over Spring break.

It does not help that I really think the guy was an idiot and most of his lecture material is 30+ years out of date.

Undergrad's a game: you win some, you lose some. Looking back, there's very few classes and even fewer professors that I truly enjoyed, and I'm definitely not the student who says he hates a class because it was hard. Don't know if that's the nature of college, or a reflection of our current state of education in the US.

Has it prepared me for vet school? Maybe, but I think my life experiences have prepared me just as much.

Any other problems I had were born of my own laziness, procrastination, or apathy. Meanwhile I had a lot of classes I loved and a lot of professors that I thought were awesome - especially in my last two years. Which is why I ended up taking multiple classes with a few of them. I guess it's really the luck of the draw. And the fact that I skipped over intro bio and chem...everyone hated those classes/professors

On one hand I'm pleased that the state public health job I applied to in early July is open again (and I don't have to reapply). On the other hand, it's really frustrating that it's taking HR this long to figure **** out. I called a month ago and received an evasive answer about why the status was still "reviewing applications." I was told they had already done interviews but they weren't going to dismiss the other applicants yet for some unknown reason. So, here it is, almost October and the job is going to be posted for another three weeks before HR starts making interviews again with an all new applicant list.

My dog is hurting 🙁 she's been favoring her back end when sitting/laying down and has had a high resting respiratory rate on and off for a few weeks but otherwise acting completely normal, no lameness, still being her usual kickass agility dog self. Only change was that she was sitting with her butt tucked under more than usual and not sitting square.

I couldn't find a source of pain so I finally made my boss do an ortho exam. She hates him so was all too happy to protest when he extended her hip. Stupid dog was hiding hip pain from me. Looks like mild DJD from the survey rads but going to repeat rads under sedation and start looking into other supplements (already on dasuquin). I thought it was just my imagination and now I'm kicking myself for not investigating sooner. I hate that my baby dog is getting older 🙁

Sucks, doesn't it? My 15yo dog has lived a super, super healthy life. One UTI around 5-6 years old .... and that's it. Not even any gastroenteritis or anything. Now at 15 she's starting to evidence canine cognitive dysfunction and she can barely barely make it up the stairs. Occasionally she goes for the first two steps and tumbles backwards. Not sure exactly what it is and I'm not going to find out. She's on supplements and metacam (big fan of metacam here......), which improve her from "can't do stairs" to "can barely do them". Breaks my heart to watch. We have a split level house and I'm frequently moving between upstairs and downstairs and no matter how tired she's getting she still follows me level to level all day/evening. I see pictures of her back when she'd go hiking with me ... hauling her saddle bags filled with her food and water (my rule was if she was gonna hike, she had to carry all her crap.... I carry my stuff, she can carry her stuff) and trotting down the trail. I'm dreading what's coming soon.

I'm having an extremely frustrating day and I just want to throw things across the room. Lots of minor things happened all day that already were making me frustrated, and I also woke up super sick yesterday after just getting over my last round of sickness, so I'm really tired and my head is super stuffy.. but I finally get home to discover I have an email saying that I now owe ~600 dollars to the university because they accidentally undercharged me tuition (and I'd taken out loans and budgeted based on how much they'd charged me, so now I'm definitely going to be short on cash in December). Even worse, I find out from my SO we're having some issues with his visa, and now instead of him moving here in January, it's looking like best case scenario, he won't be here until May/June. I know it's only another 5 or 6 months, but it feels so much worse knowing its a whole academic year away and not just a semester away. I'm really upset about it, and I spent all evening trying to figure out an alternative plan but I think we're out of luck. I don't like not being in control/not being able to do anything about it - it's another painstaking waiting game and I just want him here already. 😡

Sometimes, we watch videos online and then the prof holds 'office hours' where we can ask questions, or we can post questions to a message board whenever. Some people might like it, but I don't mind sitting in a lecture hall (especially when it forces me to sit through the lecture without being able to hit pause and play with my cats every 5 minutes).
