RANT HERE thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am deeply saddened to report that it was discovered late last night that our classmate has passed away. 🙁
My friend is a 3rd year there and she just posted about this on FB. I'm so sorry to hear he's gone. Much love to Ohio vet from penn vet. We're all one community and we're here for you.

I'm in the 3rd year as well, I knew Dave through our fraternity. My "little sib" was close with him and I've been focused on supporting her and her classmates. All of the classes were cancelled today for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years and our exams for tomorrow are postponed. There is a candlelight vigil tonight at the vet school and his family will be there. I think as a community everyone has been incredibly supportive of one another during this hard time and your thoughts are appreciated.

MY FIRST RANT/RAVE!
Well, I came home from hell week (actually, the past 2 weeks) ready to nap. We are house/pet sitting for a friend, and one of their dogs doesn't get along with one of my dogs, so we put my dog in the *large* bathroom when we are at school. He is a good dog, never really done anything too bad.. And we have been keeping him in the bathroom for the past week and a half with no problems. Anyways, I get home, let him out, and notice that he has COMPLETELY DESTROYED the carpeting in their bathroom. HE HAS RIPPED IT TO SHREDS! Even the padding underneath. I about killed him after having a slight mental breakdown. So, on top of getting only 15-20 hours of sleep since Sunday, I have to figure out how to arrange and pay for the carpet to be fixed before house owners come home... on Sunday.
:boom::boom::boom::boom::boom::boom::boom: :boom:

Sorry that this happened, but who has carpeting in a bathroom?

You could always tell them (being responsible) and let them know you're working on a solution.

I will definitely tell them when they get home, but I didn't want them to worry about it on their trip. They are elderly clients from my clinic who "adopted" me, so to speak.. I help take care of them and their multitude of pets lol. BUT they are worriers and don't want them to have any reason to come home early (or insist on paying for it themselves, which I know they would). And it sounds like it's going to be at least $150 for the minimum labor fee to just patch it, not including the cost of the carpet -__- curse these people who know I will pay whatever they want because I have no other choice..

laying down carpet REALLY sucks. So I kind of think it's one of those things worth the money

Thank you!! I've always rented so I have never had to do home repairs. I will take your word for it!

That's a good idea!! They just got new carpet a year ago though. Why they put it in the bathroom is beyond me!

If you're really worried about losing the A, it had to be more than one crappy question. Quick addendum: if you plan on Vet school and you care about 4.0s, you're gonna have a bad time. We're at the end of year 3 and there's literally a class with a reputation of taking away 4.0 from the precious few who got that far.

What class?!

So sorry to hear this, that is awful 🙁 Sending thoughts from Grenada to everyone at Ohio State right now <3

missed seeing you around these parts. How is pod? Are you going to specialize?
Thanks, dyachei! I've missed being here. Pod life is good…busy. From the tibial tuberosity down is as specialized as I'm going to get 😉. I hope you are doing fabulous!

What's the point of showing your ID and insurance card at every medical appointment if someone is still going to submit a claim to your parents' insurance provider, which you haven't been on for three years? This is the second time my university has done this for my ankle injury. The x-rays from the emergency room got billed to my parents' insurance. Now, the first orthopedic visit. I just called the member service line and I am definitely enrolled with my provider and my university and the orthopedics guy I've been seeing are definitely in my plan, so..... WTF?

Actually just met with my pod today. I don't blame you for not going further with specialization.

my life: making my practice work and getting my health in order.

What's the point of paying $2500 for insurance if they don't pay anything?! :boom:

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but my left hand (particularly my thumb) hurts so bad during/after dissection. My thumb is still aching from Wednesday. I'm not sure if I'm holding my forceps incorrectly or just aggravating carpal tunnel or something, but ow.

I'm so sorry to hear that @Stb1473.

My rant (it's pretty lame but eh) I'm going to have to stop bring my dog to happy hour. He's not very social in the sense of playing, but he enjoys going to say hi to the other dogs and just getting out of the house and running around for a little bit. But recently (end of last year and this year) the other dogs at happy hour have been super interested in just continuously mounting him. Sometimes it's the same dogs at each happy hour, but there seems to be constantly a new one and it's persistent to the point that I have to be a hover mom because he only tolerates it for so long before he'll snap. He'll growl first but none of the other dogs have seemed to care. I had been hoping it would be dog dependent, but each time there is a new dog who just keeps going at him. And then he gets so upset he displaces the same behavior on a smaller/equal sized dog as him and then I feel bad.

Not sure what it is about him -- his fluffy tail being too sexy (this is more of a joke than anything) his size and being smaller than most of the dogs (although none of the dogs go for the few other smaller dogs) or what.

orca, I had a similar issue with my dog when I brought him to the dog park. The dogs there would just mount him over and over. He'd tolerate it for the most part, but there was one incident where he growled and snapped at another dog who then backed off. And another scarier incident where a pack of 3-4 dogs tried to go after him to keep humping him and started snapping at each other while my dog tried to cower and get away. The owners were nowhere to be found, so I had to carry my muddy dog out of there while the other dogs jumped up on me and growled at each other. It only ever happened when I brought him there by myself. If my husband came along, they left him alone. We couldn't pinpoint any other factor within our control that could be affecting their behavior. We eventually just stopped going even though he really loved running around at full speed and playing with the other dogs. 🙁

My mini rant for today - why do my coworkers keep coming in sick to work? On Wednesday, one of the people I worked with had a cold so bad she sounded like Barry White. Another coworker has been complaining all week about her sore throat and how "it's probably strep throat again." Yesterday, she was bragging about how she never calls out sick, with the implication being that people who do call out sick are lazy wimps.

Of course, last night, my throat was starting to feel dry and scratchy, and my sinuses were occasionally hurting. This morning, I feel and sound like sh-t. THANKS, GUYS! :arghh: I'm going to call out sick because I'm not the type of a-hole who brings infectious diseases into work so I can get everyone else sick, too.

I'm going to call out sick because I'm not the type of a-hole who brings infectious diseases into work so I can get everyone else sick, too.

Unless you plan to be out sick for at least 7 days, if not longer, you'll still be shedding the virus when you return to work. Rhino virus (guessing this since it is most common virus this time of year) can be shed for 7-10 days or longer. So while I understand the frustration of people showing up "sick", you're never going to be able to avoid spreading something like the cold virus around at work. So yeah, unless I'm honestly feeling really cruddy, I'll rarely call out sick for the typical "head cold" because I know that one sick day I take won't make jack crap difference in my spreading of the virus. And I know there aren't any people that take off the minimal 7 days to not be spreading the virus, so it always makes me chuckle a little when people complain about the sick person showing up then they only stay home a day or two and come back with still a bit of a cough or mild nasal discharge.

Given the choice between working with an actively sick person for 6 days straight or working with an actively sick person for 3 days straight, I'll take the latter. I think it's inconsiderate to show up to work when you're sick and half dead and dragging a-- and spreading germs all over the place.

I don't think it's always that easy. I worked at a place that required a doctor's note prior to calling in sick. So I would have to get someone to cover my shift in order to go to the doctor, pay a copay for the doctor to tell me "fluids and rest," and then hope that work accepted that doctor's note. Not to mention the fact that some of us literally cannot pay our bills if we take time off because of being sick.
I totally get where you're coming from and I've definitely felt like that before, but taking the time off of work just isn't possible for everyone every time they get sick.

You know which appointments I hate? ADRs. Ain't doing rights. Fluffy is "off". Rover is "not himself". Precious is "acting strange". Inevitably, this is how it goes:
Me: Appetite normal?
Client: Oh yes.
Me: Drinking normally?
Client: Yes.
Me: Any noticeable pain?
Client: No.
Me: Vomiting? Diarrhea?
Client: None.
Me:....
Client: He's just.... off. Fix him. (And 90% of the time, this is followed by not wanting any diagnostics at all.)

busy day at work today. dog fight, cat losing weight, dog with next to no WBC, dog with hives, a few annuals. But I had surgery 3 days ago. And my fingers are turning blue on that extremity. I've loosened the bandage and have been elevating but still turning blue.

Scott told us sometime this week that your thumb holding the forceps can get sore if you're using a dull scalpel blade. The rationale behind it is that you need to pull tighter with the forceps to cut effectively, and it's so subtle people don't really notice until they're sore afterward. Try replacing your scalpel blade more often and see if that makes a difference.

My thoughts are going out to all the students at Ohio State. 🙁 I'm so sorry for your loss.

I understand that, though in this particular place, you don't need a doctor's note to call out sick. I really need the money, too, especially after VMCAS and especially since I just had to replace my car. I needed the pay from yesterday and today's time-and-a-half shift, but multiple people coming in while pretty sick made me sick, too, and I'm not young enough or well enough to just go in and put up with feeling like utter crap, anyway. I need rest to recuperate. Last time I kept going to class and running around while sick, I had a cough that persisted for 3 weeks. There have been studies done on this in the context of the debate over paid sick days, and the data show that offering paid sick days and encouraging workers to use them leads to higher productivity and less contagion overall. Sometimes you can't help it and have to go in anyway, but that doesn't change the fact that going to work sick is more harmful for everyone in the long run. And it doesn't help that one of my coworkers was straight up bragging about how she never stays home when she's sick.

True. Big public health issue.

At my old clinic, it was highly discouraged and looked down upon to call in sick. Which is ridiculous, considering bringing in your contagious illness and infecting everyone else lowers production in the long run :/

We didn't even attempt to call in sick. If we even hinted at the fact that we felt like utter crap, it turned into a 'who feels worse' contest with the doctor. Sometimes it seemed like you got worked harder when you were sick. I had bronchitis and the flu in February. I was the one picked to haul 30ish cinder blocks back into storage :arghh: Talk about sore muscles and wheezing!!

If you need to rest and recuperate because that's best for you, go for it. Everyone is different when it comes to being sick and whether or not they decide to take off from work or not. I'm not saying the coworker bragging about never calling in is in any way "right". I'd actually roll my eyes hard at him/her. But look at what you stated too, "I'm not going to be the a-hole who comes in sick and makes others sick." Clearly, you think what you do is better and she thinks what she does is better. It's the same thing at just two opposite ends of the spectrum.

The cold is spread prior to symptoms appearing and for a decent length of time after. It isn't as simple as, "if people just stayed home for a couple days when sick" because they've been spreading the virus prior to feeling sick and still will when they return even if they take a couple days off.

That's why I'm more of a, do what will be best for you.

I'm recovering from a recent cold/flu and showed up sick to clinics. Along with at least 5 other people on my rotation. It was going around, 5 of us sick at once. On clinics, miss a day, you make it up, sometimes just an assignment, sometimes a full day when you have an "off" block. Miss 3 days, you make up a whole week. You only have so many blocks off. And at some point, you're going to want an actual break. So it is different, not to mention if all 5 of us left, that service wouldn't have been able to function. For me, showing up was the best decision. My roommate also got sick (on a different service) she chose to take one day off. Different strokes for different folks and I don't fault anyone either way.

Anyway, I'm rambling. I hope you cuddle up in bed with a warm pet, a book, or some bad daytime tv and are feeling better very soon. 🙂

Antibiotics. Pain meds. Subq fluids. 50% of the time it works every time.

Dumped via text message.

And here I thought high school was over. I hate dating.

Step 1: Get a drop-dead gorgeous friend of yours that your ex doesn't know to pose in a very intimate picture with you. You know, smiling at each other nose-to-nose.

Step 2: Post on FB.

Step 3: Laugh at the jerk who dumped you via a text message.

Just got back some blood results from a physical a couple of weeks ago. Turns out I'm hypothyroid (TSH was >6). Ugh. Awesome. I guess it does sort of explain why I've been gaining a lot of weight lately despite eating barely anything and working out more, as well my puffy face. :sorry:

🙁 I've had that happen to me, too. Royally sucks. I hope things can start looking a bit more up soon. Have a big bowl of ice cream and play with some puppies... *hugs*

Oh, and, yes, I agree with @LetItSnow.

If LIS is your friend on FB, he may have other things to gain with this plan.

LIS aside, boys are really dumb sometimes.

I still really, really dislike watching lectures at home (unless it's for review). I feel like I'm losing study time by watching new lectures instead of using the normal class time for the lecture. The normal class time is now going to be used for case discussions, it looks like.

I had been hoping I was hypothyroid recently because I eat better, eat less, workout 3+ times a week and I keep gaining weight/not losing inches and I'm just exhausted all the time. Nope. Normal TSH levels... Rest of my blood work is all normal too so now idea why I still have an enlarged lymph node.

Do you guys have just audio and are able to download it? If so, just get VLC Player and speed stuff up. Double the lectures in the same amount of time.

It doesn't look like we can download it 🙁

I had similar symptoms (minus the lymph node) and it ended up being PCOS + sleep apnea

Welcome to my life 🙄 I love my school, I love our PBL curriculum but it gets really frustrating when you realize how much time you spend in class and then you have to go home and not only look up the material for that night but you also need to find time to review for exams. Good thing I'm on clinics now!
