@awesomenessity I'm so sorry <3 I put down 2 of my 3 last year and there aren't words for how hard it is, especially when you can't be there and you feel guilty. If you need to chat/vent/cry to a sympathetic ear who's been there recently, my inbox is always open.
 
Thank you guys <3 I don't have that many pics of her because she never competed (in fact had only been ridden like 9 times total) or did anything so she was just a pasture ornament. But here's a few, including some of her as a foal. She was born on our acreage and had only ever left like... twice. At least she's not in pain anymore, which is the important thing <3

She was adorable! I was a smidge surprised when I got to the third photo where she'd greyed out from the baby bay. I'm sorry for your loss...nothing truly makes it easier. I'll be thinking about you.

Man Pippy, I get it. My mom and stepdad live half the year down in FL (snowbirds) and my stepbrother and his wife live in a different part of FL, and just had a baby maybe a week or two ago. Well, my mom and stepdad drove a few hours from their place to visit the baby right after they left the hospital, and spent hours there, then left to drive back up to PA where they stay during the summer. I am so upset that they visited. I understand that it's another grandchild (ffs this is this particular stepbrother's third one though seriously and they're all boys don't they all just kind of meld together after a certain point??) but this isn't the time to go visiting people who just got home from a hospital when they have a newborn baby and you are 60 years old. The baby will probably still be there later this year when they go back, and it isn't like the thing is going to even remember that they visited when it was a week old anyhow.

I feel you @Elkhart, we're planning on moving at the beginning of June and figuring out the logistics is difficult. Hopefully things will be a bit better at that point, but it's so hard to say. We're moving to a different state, so we won't be able to tour any houses in person, and then there's figuring out physically moving our stuff. We can do most of it ourselves with renting a truck, but some of our large furniture we can't safely lift just the two of us. I don't feel comfortable asking friends or family to help right now, so we may have to risk hiring movers for at least the big stuff, and just sanitize everything well once we get there. It's a tough time to be planning any major life changes for sure.

I identified so deeply with this part of your post, Elkhart. (Also lemme know if you want me to cut the quote). I got a job for after graduation back in December and bought a house in January. The house sale closes on the 20th of this month and then we have to drive across the country to get to it.

It's my first ever home purchase with my fiance and we want this to be our forever house - so there's a chance we'll never do it again. And nothing about it has been "normal". Bank meetings over the phone. Waiting awkwardly outside the notary office while they signed everything. We can't go to our own house closing because we have to quarantine for 2 weeks when we get there. And getting there itself when there are provincial border checks is a huge stress factor when this should be the most exciting time!

Anyway, tl;dr is I feel your "this should be a BFD and it's just stressful now" very deeply and we're definitely in it together. I just want us to be able to celebrate life's milestones without feeling guilty, y'know?

@Elkhart, I don’t know what your furniture budget is going to be, but I have bought a bookshelf, desk, plastic storage drawers and a few other things from target in the last month or so and used their Drive Up feature...it has been magical. I order online then pull up, then they bring it out and load it into the bed for me while I sit in the car. I know that doesn’t work for everything you need in a new house, but it’s something to consider, especially if you or a family member have a truck to haul the cheap furniture home.
 
One of our best clients (who took Caspian one a week before 'quarantine') is putting down their old golden today. He was a frequent flyer for laser therapy and underwater treadmill so we all knew them well 😢 Clinic was joking the owners would need more Caspian time but they haven't taken him for outings since 'quarantine' as they are both high risk (completely understandable). Wish I could let him visit them

Wayfair and overstock are also great places to find furniture online @Elkhart and you can usually get a 10-15% off coupon too

Oh yes, these are good for things that you get shipped. The thing I have ordered from wayfair had instructions that were very easy to follow. And I think I got a 20% off coupon from wayfair in my USPS change of address coupons they send when I moved so maybe it can be even more discounted.

Oh this sounds so familiar. We had a couple that had a old golden who was in a lot. They were amazing clients and did so much for that dog. A couple times towards the end of their golden’s life there was a couple in with their golden puppy and they just loved to fuss over him. So sad when that dog passed on.
 
My older cat didn't eat much yesterday and then vomited water once and continued to be nauseated last night so I was up with her worrying if I should take her to the ER. Slept for maybe 4 hours.

This morning my mom told me she's has some intermittent trouble breathing the last two days and one of her calves has been swollen. So she's at the ER for a suspect PTE.

Gotta say I'm not sure how much more worrying about the people (and cats) I love I can take.

Update:
Old lady kitty hasn't continued to vomit and ate a little bit. Hoping it's a transient thing and her appetite fully returns.

My mom is being hospitalized, they confirmed DVT in her leg and PTE. She is doing well right now. She doesn't have any known predisposing factors so they're investigating further as well as treating her. I have an inheritable clotting disorder myself so it'll be interesting to see if she's the one I got it from. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that's what it is and not heart disease or something like that.

In any case I feel...very lucky. I'm just so glad that my grandma is a retired nurse, so when she called her and talked about her symptoms she knew exactly what it was.

Hasn't been seen since Monday morning. Usually he goes for a walk in the morning and is home by 9 AM for a nap. Not this time. We've walked his route, calling (yes, he comes when called), advertised as missing everywhere, both online and on flyers, animal control doesn't have him, not seen squashed on the road....

Always wears a collar and city license, so if he's around he has the means to find his way home, but at this point I'm not optimistic.

I can confidently say there are likely many things animals experience that people don't recognize. I am sorry you have things going wrong. 🙁

they definitely do. as someone in pharma/animal testing right now, they experience a heck of a lot of these types of things, sadly (we know cuz we do telemetric monitoring and such)

that is very unpleasant though. sorry to hear it. hope it resolves soon!

I don't really care if other people use them, but "dogtor," "furbaby," "pet parent." etc are definitely not words in my vocabulary, and I would never be able to make myself say them.

ETA: However, I do call a lot of animals "love" or "darling".

Yeah, I hate it too. I feel like a lot of "cutesy" terms like this really infantilize the work we do as medical professionals and it irks me. I do acknowledge that in the grand scheme of things they're relatively harmless, but still, not phrases I tend to use from day to day.
 
I don't think I've used dogtor (except when referring to a dog dressed up as a doctor lol) but outside of professional settings definitely use birb and danger noodle and sea flap flap and whatever. Those posters like the one above amuse me greatly. The necropsy room at one of the zoos I worked at had a manatee one and it was excellent.

The meme doesn't bother me.

And all kittens are ****tens.

But dogtor just....no. To me it reduces the value of our profession.

Furbaby bothers me too. But I've definitely used "take fluffy back to his mom/dad" because it just gets added to the vocabulary once working in a clinic long enough and that's what everyone else around you is saying.

I have a personal dislike for a lot of these terms also because my 13 year old cousin uses them in conversation with everyone. She has been harshly bullied her whole public school life due to other factors, and then has no coping mechanisms due to poor parenting. So I feel it opens her up to further bullying. I understand it's not her fault other people suck; but her mental health has suffered greatly. :/

So do I. But it's been going on for a week, is worse/more frequent now than when it started, and I'm not getting the impression my doctor cares all that much about it. So I'm not optimistic this is going to be resolved anytime soon. Unless it just magically stops on its own.

After spending a bunch of time helping out in breeding barns and with horse repro vets, every horse that is not my own is "momma". Like, "easy momma" or "that's a good momma". Even if they're a gelding or a stallion :whistle:

I call most things "sweet pea". I don't know why. Most large male dogs are "buddy". And the little ones are "peanut".
Cats are "-pants", like sassypants, crazypants, kittypants.

I never used mom or dad until I realized how much some owners really like it, so I do for those people.
 
When I was an intern a tech at our sister GP called every animal she touched "creach". Like short for creature I think. I usually don't care what people call things but that one grated on my nerves so much.

I hate furbaby and furkids but don't mind mom/dad.

I add "dog" or "cat" before any description of anything about the pet that I'm talking about. Like "Alright buddy, let me take a look at your dog feet" or "Did someone hurt your cat feelings?"

It's so ingrained I almost can't stop it anymore. That and calling cats "kitty kitty meow meows" and dry cat food "crunchies". I've actually accidentally gotten classmates onto using both of those horrible bits of my vernacular.
 
There are way more important things in the world to be annoyed by than if someone uses cutesy names. If someone likea to think of their pet as a baby, then good -- I'd rather pets be treated like family than chained outside with minimal socialization.

And if someone calls me a "dogtor," it isn't going to erase the 4 years of veterinary school and my "dogtorate" that goes along with it 😉

That's just my opinion about it.

I use crunchies all the time now thanks to you

Although I do also still call the cats' dry food "Doritos" sometimes when crunchies doesn't sound degrading enough

I also call everything sweetpea and peanut. Once actually had a patient named sweetpea and it threw me off so many times because I couldn’t remember the cats name ever because their name is just what I call everything :laugh:
 
I feel like the point of this thread is to share feelings about whatever (within reason) and not get put down or told there are more important things to worry about.

Like, yeah. Obviously there are more important things to worry about than using cutesy names in our profession. I just posted a few days ago in this same thread about my entire family being infected with covid-19. I'm well aware of the relative insignificance of using the term "dogtor."

I've been coming here for years expecting a supportive community (and getting that for the most part) and I've been so grateful for that, as I've expressed time and time again. But to be made to feel like I'm dumb for having said something lighthearted? Come on. Seeing that way more often on here lately than I'd care for.

Everyone's feelings here are valid regardless of what they're about (again, within reason). Coming after people for small stuff, whether personally or in general, is it really worth it?

I don't see where anyone was going after anyone. I see people voicing their difference in opinions.

Pippy and Paws did not state that other people shouldn't feel bothered by these terms, just that they don't sweat it.

I'm incredibly sorry if you took my comment to mean I was criticizing you at all. I absolutely did not intend it that way and was more just chiming in with my frustrations as well. My apologies if my internet tone was insulting, definitely did not mean it that way

When I'm reading that there are way more important things in the world to be annoyed by, i just don't see that as a simple statement of difference in opinion. Maybe that's just me and my sensitivity.
