It's new and terrible

Oh, don't worry, it's on the main forum page on the left for THREADS too.

I want it to go away. Don't like it.

Congrats guys! It looks like enough of us complained!

List of new updates:

You can upvote individual threads now, but not if OP deleted their account.

When you hover over someone's name you can see: Messages, Reaction Score, Points, Discussions, Polls (if they made any), Questions (if they asked any, some people don't). You can see how many of each the member has.

When you click on the persons profile you can see: Profile posts, Latest activity, Postings, Discussions, Polls, Questions, About, Post areas.

Under discussions you can see every thread the person created. Under Post Areas you can see every forum the person has ever posted on. The post areas lists the forums as either Lounge, Pre-med, Pre-vet, Site Suggestions, Feedback and Help desk etc. You can see how many posts the person made under these forums and you can click the number to see the posts they've made. You can literally click on a person's profile, click post areas, click lounge, and see what they've posted in the lounge. You can limit who views your profile and they won't see anything.
Here were the other horrible updates. There were also comments along with quote and reply

So I’m a little frustrated because I’m underpaid at my job. I’m currently a vet assistant at a small general practice and have been there since August 2018. I started with no experience and learned everything on the job. As an assistant, I have limitations. I don’t draw up or administer vaccines, I don’t draw blood, I don’t read ear cytologys (sp?) or fecals on my own etc. I am fully capable of your average assistant stuff and am fully capable of running reception by myself. I currently make $11 and started over 2 years ago at $9. The staff and doctors are great and I’ve gained a lot of experience working there. I know that we are a smaller practice but it’s disheartening to see similar positions offered on Indeed for $12+ at practices comparable to ours. It was especially disappointing when I found out that the assistant that we hired back in November who didn’t have prior veterinary experience also got raised to $11. I guess I just find it a little unfair that I’ve been here for nearly 3 years and she’s been here 6 months and we make the same amount. Especially when I am more skilled than her simply because I have been trained in more. There’s no point leaving now for a new job because I’m moving away for vet school in late July. It just sucks and I want to complain about it.

If it makes you feel any better, I had a very similar experience a few years ago.

I worked for a clinic for 3 full years, plus summers and school breaks during my first year of college, and I was hired on at $9 working exclusively in the kennels/boarding area. At some point around 2 years in, I got a raise to $9.25, but my boss never actually told me I got the raise. Then I started working in the back as an assistant vet tech in addition to boarding shifts, doing very similar tasks to you, and I never got a raise from $9.25 for the new position. Imagine my displeasure when I found out the clinic hired a new girl starting at $11 who took some of my hours and was paid more even though she was brand new. So I've been in your shoes before and it really sucks. I was so happy quitting that position and leaving that clinic. If you can, maybe try talking to your boss and see if they would be willing to give you a raise? Even though it's only for a few months, it doesn't hurt to ask. Come prepared and explain why you deserve a raise. The worst thing to happen is they tell you no.

It's common for that to happen, even outside of the vet world...can't say it's universal but I know it happens in other industries, too. Wages increase to attract new hires. Definitely fair to ask for a raise!

I’m such a wuss about this stuff and I just found out about my raise today and that my coworker also got a raise. So I guess it would be harder to ask for a raise when I just got one.

Unfortunately I think you're right about not asking at this time.

The job that I had before I came to vet school, I remember after so many months I was given a raise, and my boss told me that was the only freebie and that if I wanted another raise I'd have to ask for it. Finally, I was trying to move out of my parents' house and needed more money so I asked for one but was nervous. She gave it to me but told me to work on my presentation next time lol

Yeah if you're leaving in a few short months then may not be worth asking, but in the future, definitely will be worth approaching management and asking.

If you are planning on returning to the same practice to work while in vet school (ie on weekends or vacations) then after a few months of vet school under your belt then possibly ask for a raise when you return to work. Instead of being prevet student you’ll be a vet student which is theoretically more valuable.

Another work rant... as much as I love the doctor I work with, he’s too soft on the clients. Soft to the point that they take advantage of him and us, the staff. I’m sick of him overriding us when we tell clients our current COVID policies. He’s just manifesting the worst habits in people who are already difficult to deal with as it is.

Need to rant for a sec because I'm very angry and stressed out.

My university is going forward with in person graduation (socially distanced, masks required, a maximum of 8 guests per graduate in our giant football stadium), which I'm grateful for. My ceremony was supposed to take place at 8am. My sister's HS graduation is taking place the exact same day at 2pm in my hometown 2 hours away from my college town. That was already cutting it close trying to get me + my family back home in time for her graduation.

This morning, the university announced that instead of having 2 separate graduations for my specific college (one for the class of 2021 and one for the class of 2020), they instead combined the ceremonies and it now starts at 9am. I have no clue how long the ceremony will last (the graduation FAQs aren't updated with the new ceremony times and changes) and I'm really worried that my family might have to pick between seeing me graduate and seeing my sister graduate, and I will likely have to miss seeing her graduate now. I can't believe they changed this with literally less than 2 weeks notice. I'm so frustrated by these changes and it is very upsetting to have these changes thrust upon us with no warning.
As a small update to this: of course the weather this weekend in KS is awful. One or both of the graduation ceremonies on Saturday might be cancelled depending on how bad it storms. :sorry:

My boss just cancelled my going-away party tomorrow because of the rain (everyone in the research lab is vaccinated, and this was going to be the first time seeing each other in person in months) but hopefully we can reschedule it for some day in the next two weeks before I start my internship.

I had my clin path final yesterday. I was a little slow to start in the beginning of the course, but I made a dramatic turnaround in the second half of the course. I mean my score on every assignment for the second half was 12-15% higher than the ones in the first half. The course is cumulative of course, so doing so well on later material demonstrates that I really do have a clear understanding of the subject.

I got my grade for the final back and I did very well. I was happy. Then I checked my final grade. I’m on the cusp between two grades, and I’m really upset about it. Taking into account all assignments for the entire course, the difference between grades would have been a single question on any of the 6 major assessments throughout the semester. One more correct question and I would have gone up a letter grade.

So I sent the professor an email begging to bump me up. I explained that this is something I have never done in all my years of schooling. I usually feel that I made my bed and should lie in it. But to be this close, to have this high of a trend, and to fall THAT short just destroyed me. I’m hoping she takes pity on me and feels that I deserve it. We’ll see.

A good news update: it didn’t rain and I was able to get to my sister’s ceremony! We both graduated today and it all went well!

6 months of essentially no sense of smell or taste post covid. Have small animal diagnostic imaging as my first rotation...and of course I've realized I can actually smell the ultrasound gel, except to me it smells horrible like something rotting. Even through 2 facemasks. Covid is just the gift that keeps on giving. :bang:

Seriously wanting a tuition reduction for my vet school. First, an entire year of online with a good chunk of our lectures just being pre-recordings from prior years we had to listen to on our own time. Then for clinics, there are several 5 credit SA rotations without weekend responsibilities that we were told we could try to request before externships so we have the weekend off to travel. Now SURPRISE...for those 5 credit rotations we are taking, they are tacking on a weekend nursing care shift from 12 am-8 am. Our travel request needs were not taken into account, and we cannot switch shifts, and the rotation it gets tacked onto is still worth less credits than a rotation with scheduled weekend duties...even though we now have a forced weekend duty to fix their staffing shortages. And now we lose an ENTIRE WEEK of one of our core LA rotations to do nursing treatments for an entire week, so instead of 2 weeks of LA medicine, I have 1 week of medicine and then 1 week of just nursing treatments. I feel like I fell for the world's most expensive scam.

@alleycat03 Congratulations! See you around the vet school in the fall! We worried about the graduations too. My gf was graduating Saturday morning. We made it through though! Year one vet school done and on to summer jobs then to year two!

Rant - it was frustrating to have no days off before my summer research program started (particularly after no spring break). Finals Friday and program started on Monday. Into the second week now. Lots of work to do but at least I get money for it.

See you around the vet school next year!! Your girlfriend must have had the same graduation ceremony as me. I’m so thankful our ceremony was rain-free, but I’m bummed that the ceremonies on Sunday weren’t as fortunate.

Probably! She got a BS in chem. I was in the stands so I probably saw you there!

... clients that pat themselves on the back repeatedly for being such good and loving owners and doing "everything they can" while simultaneously making an ever-increasing chain of the worst decisions possible that result in the most suffering possible while ignoring every veterinarian's advice on the way, all so that we get to watch their pet die a horrible death in our care.

Thanks, clients!

Why do people feel the need to drive like it's a ****ing race
I was driving on a highway yesterday that had 2 lanes in my direction and 1 in the other with no median and very little shoulder. I'm in the right lane and I see two bicyclists ahead of me. My lane is ending soon anyway so I throw on my turn signal to give the cyclists room. There was room to merge right then, if a little tight, but the INSTANT my turn signal went on, the Prius behind me sped up to cut me off. Had to slam my brakes to keep from freaking killing someone.

I'm still mad.

I feel like the whole driving situation has gotten a lot worse in the last year. It's as if people forgot how to drive, forgot they aren't the only ones on the road, lost all patience with the world and decided they can act like jerks, or all of the above.

Personalities. My dad commuted to work with a guy who was like that. Dad said Jay viewed it as one big competition - you had to do everything you could to "beat" the guy in the car next to you. Wasn't about trying to get anywhere more quickly (after all, who wants to get to work more quickly?) - it was purely about beating the guy next to you.

Always seemed incredibly stupid to me (and my dad), but that was the personality behind it - just one big competition.

Jay does know that like no one else gives a ****, right?

Welcome to your new town, Finn!

*Gets hit by someone who proceeds to just take off*

Awesome.

I am not injured. Just my car.
Ugh I'm sorry. People are such dinguses. I will never forgive the person who drove off after driving me into a utility pole on the highway and now I have a very visceral and intense hatred of hit and run drivers. I wish them nothing but the worst

This resonates... so.much.

client sends gazillion emails every week asking about every stupid ass thing, when really none of what they’re asking is the main issue and refuses to bring the pet in because they don’t want to pay a consult fee because the owner’s “done with that” and it “hasn’t helped in the past” and they’ve “figured it out themselves” but finally walks in as an emergency 30min from close with a recumbent flat dog and sees me for the first time...

“I’ve done EVERYTHING! I’ve seen so many vets and spent so much money, and nothing is helping!!!”

and when you’re like... “well I can’t imagine a veterinarian advising you to do what you’re doing (you know... like feeding different things/amounts and giving variable amounts of insulin based on a BG before each mealtime)”

“Well I don’t know what else to do! When I listened to my vet (for all of two weeks) it wasn’t working so I needed to do what I needed to do! And every other vet keeps telling me to do the same stupid thing that didn’t work the first time.”

So how’s that working out for ya? Dog’s skeletor, blind as a bat, with BG too high to read, urine scalded in a diaper, and now dka. Seriously, just put the poor dog out of its misery from your own stupidity. But no. $10k hospitalization to get the dog out of dka. And apparently my talk resonated about how dog needs to be managed by a vet and if she thought gps were too stupid to manage her dog, needs an internist. And I continue to get cc’d on alllll the daily emails they send to the internist repeating the cycle of not listening and doing their own thing. “I know you said just give 3 units every 12 hours but his sugar was 400 today so I gave him 5, and this was his curve for the day. I gave him 1 unit in the afternoon because his blood sugar got down to 50 and I needed to give him a snack half way during the day, and an extra slice of bread with dinner”

If only everywhere was Sweden. One of the main things they bragged about when I was studying abroad there was how amazing paternity benefits are there. Both mothers and fathers (adopted/born) are entitled to 480 days of paid leave.
480 days??!! That's too good to be true!! WOW!!

One of many reasons why I consider returning to the land of my ancestors frequently. If only I spoke Swedish fluently...

Technically you don’t have to speak swedish. :ninja: 😉 Almost everyone speaks English and will happily speak English if you don’t know Swedish. So you can live your Nordic dreams...

Dude people would never need to go back to work.. just keep popping out a kid every 480 days.

I definitely think we need paid maternity leave and for a longer period of time but as someone who chooses not to have kids and gets stuck with the extra work when people are out, a year and a half of leave is excessive and absolutely puts insane pressure on your other colleagues. Does Sweden have a paid sabbatical option for those that don't utilize the maternity leave benefit?

To get work as a vet and citizenship definitely had to speak swedish last I looked but yes definitely on my bucket list to at least go! Super cool you got to study abroad there!
